Blog spotlight: The Boston Gayllennial

The Boston GayllennialI make no secret of the fact that I would like to see more LGBT bloggers in Boston. There are only a few of us (at least that I’m aware of) so I’d like to give a shout out to a newish blog that started earlier this year by an anonymous young man who identifies himself as “The Boston Gayllennial“.

His posts range on a variety of subject matter, providing a somewhat autobiographical account of his life and can be described as personal reflections about growing up as a gay millennial living in Boston. I enjoy reading his blog and added it to my blogroll some time ago.  Check out the blog and say hello to the young man by leaving him a comment in one of his posts.  I can assure you nothing motivates a blogger more than getting comments to a post you wrote.

Vintage gay

Vintage Gay from LargeTonyI want to dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price.  Do you have a photo you would like to share? Word of the day: Blinkah

BosTongue, Masshole

I like to think of my blog as an important, educational site that can help you expand your vocabulary.  Today’s vocabulary word is blinkah.

bliNGkah (rənahnoun)
Definition: a device that blinks, especially a vehicle’s turn signal.
Example: That S.O.B. didn’t use his blinkah on Storrow Drive and cut me off

BYOB is coming to (some) Boston restaurants

drink upBoston’s annoying liquor laws seem to irritate just about everyone I know. One law that looks to be changing is the city’s decades-old prohibition of the ‘bring your own booze’ (BYOB) to restaurants. Known for draconian laws with all things related to alcohol, maybe the Boston Licensing Board overturned a ban on BYOB; a trend that started in the 1920s as a way for restaurants to bypass Prohibition-era laws.

Boston Thrillist wrote a nice article on “What You Need To Know” which I’ve distilled for you below if you want to know more.

1 – Nothing has actually changed yet. The changes if implemented will go into effect at the end of this year (not sure the exact date yet).

2 – BYOB won’t be available everywhere. Places with a liquor license will not qualify; mostly this will apply to smaller restaurants with 30 or fewer seats, dine-in service and the appropriate insurance.

3 – Restaurants can charge you a corkage fee.

You can read the full article in Thrillist which was written in January before the Boston Licensing Board overturned the ban online, here.

Temptation Tuesday

BosGuy, Temptation TuesdayFour years ago on May 10, 2012 this photograph of Shemar Moore inspired me to create a weekly post called Temptation Tuesday.  The photo still serves as an excellent source of inspiration and temptation. Thank you to all of you who regularly visit, share and comment on these posts.

Read this post if you are taking PrEP

Gilead, HRCI know a lot of gay men who are on Truvada (PrEP) and while the decision to take this daily medication is a personal choice, for those who are on this prescription drug I wanted to bring your attention to the Gilead Co-Pay Coupon Card, which could save you quite a bit of money.

Truvada, PrEPGilead Co-Pay Coupon Card

Gilead asks just a few questions to determine your eligibility like are you a current resident of the US or Puerto Rico and provides some interesting benefits like covering up to $3,600 in co-pays per year with no monthly limit for TRUVADA® (emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate).

Chaírete Kava Neo Taverna

Restaurant, Boston, GreekKava Neo Taverna is opening their doors for their South End neighbors to stop by and enjoy the neighborhood’s newest restaurant from 6-9PM tonight.

When I stopped by to talk to the team busy at work, it sounded like they were hoping to be open for dinner daily as early as tomorrow, but I still don’t see the restaurant listed for reservations on Open Table so be sure to check back.

Kava Neo Taverna is located across from the South End Buttery on the corner of Union Park and Shawmut in the South End.

Travel to Iceland has never been easier

gay travel, travel, europeReykjavik, Iceland may not be on your bucket list but with two Icelandic airlines offering non-stop daily service from Boston the five hour flight, which can cost less than a Boston – San Francisco fare, may be a fun summer destination to consider. Both discount airlines offer travelers the opportunity to book flights with a stopover for several nights in Reykjavik to experience Iceland before continuing on to more than 30 destinations in Europe if you would rather couple your visit with a longer vacation to another European city.

When I first floated the idea of visiting Reykjavik to Sergio several years back he looked at me like I had three heads and said something to the effect of, “Why would I want to go to a country made of ice?“, but nothing could be further from the truth if you visit in the summer when the days are at their longest.  One of the things that I definitely would like to do when we visit (someday) is check out their famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa which remains warm year round.

Exchange rates for American travelers to Iceland remain favorable with one US dollar roughly equal to 125 Icelandic Króna, which is slightly down from the end of 2015 but still incredibly advantageous for American travelers.

Have you visited Iceland before? Are you thinking of traveling to Reykjavik this summer? The city’s gay pride celebration is August 2- 7, 2016. You can find out more information about Reykjavik Gay Pride on their FB page, here.

Boston’s newer parks: Now and then

Boston before the Big Dig

Boston before the Big Dig

Curbed Boston had an interesting post this week, Boston’s Newer Parks: Now and Then.  The image above shows Boston’s elevated expressway; the predecessor to our now submerged expressway (a.k.a. The Big Dig) that modernized the North / South route and reconnected downtown neighborhoods that had been separated by the imposing, noisy and dirty expressway.

Big Dig, Rose Kennedy Greenway

The Rose Kennedy Greenway replaced traffic and pollution with parks

The Big Dig may still be the butt of many jokes regarding cost overruns and delays, but everyone I know agrees the city is much better and more beautiful because of the Big Dig. What was once a hulking mass of steel with too many exits and terrible traffic has given way to beautiful parks and space for the public to enjoy. I give the city a lot of credit for reserving this space for the public.

The Curbed Boston article has more images like this that you can view here.

Happy Mother’s Day

Mom and DadI wanted to take a moment to say Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom, my sister Elizabeth, my sister Susan who is pregnant with her first child, my sister-in-law Ashley and to all the other wonderful women I know who have taken on the toughest job I can think of, motherhood.

It doesn’t seem right that you only get one day out of the year to be recognized for all you do for your children.
