World Premiere: I Was Most Alive with You

Huntington Theatre, Calderwood Pavilion, Boston TheaterThe Huntington Theatre world premiere, I Was Most Alive with You, opens next week at the Calderwood Pavilion in the South End. The new play centers on a gay, deaf man who undergoes a series of severe life reversals.

Craig Lucas who wrote and is directing the production also wrote librettos to the current hit Broadway musical An American in Paris and to Adam Guettel’s The Light in the Piazza; his list of plays includes Prelude to a Kiss, Blue Window and Reckless. Award-winning deaf actor Russell Harvard ( Spring Awakening on Broadway) will play the lead role of Knox.

I have teamed up with my friend, Fernando DeOliveira, who is an artist and gallery owner to present an art show that will open during Boston Pride on Thursday, June 2nd. The Boston Pride theme of Solidarity Through Pride served as the inspiration for the artists to create their work and the South End, Alternative Art Space Gallery will showcase these works from local LGBT artists (many of whom have never shown their work before).

Opus AffairTomorrow, Monday, May 16 join Opus Affair in Kenmore Square at The Hawthorne for their monthly cocktail social which also happens to be their 8th birthday extravaganza from 6pm – 9pm.

Unfamiliar with Opus Affair? The group is comprised of a mix of artists and art appreciators who get together each month for cocktails and to chat about the arts scene in Boston or whatever else comes to mind. Some people come for serious networking, others come for fun. There’s no agenda—just a chance to have a few drinks with other like-minded folks.

This is not a ball sack dryer

Iceland blowdryer signSome stories are so bizarre I can’t help but share them. I should give a shout out to NPR podcast, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, which brought this to my attention.

Apparently some men in swimming pool locker rooms in Iceland are taking advantage of the facilities, using communal hairdryers on their nether regions. To address this problem, one Icelandic pool has created a sign titled, “This is not a ball sack dryer”, the note continues saying, “Don‘t dry your ball sack or your butt with the communal hairdryer in the swimming pool or the gym… Bald older gentlemen with hairy torsos must either bring their own blow-dryers or just buy a more absorbent towel.”

They’ve even created a poster, showing an elderly man hair drying himself inappropriately, but have covered the problem area with a large red X.

SpeakEasy Stage ends season with Dogfight

SpeakEasy Stage presents Dogfight at the Calderwood through June 4, 2016

SpeakEasy Stage is concluding their 25th season with the musical, Dogfight. The two act musical tells the story of three young Marines on their last night in San Francisco before they are shipped off to Vietnam.

The story centers around a contest the marine platoon hosts for each man to find and bring the homeliest girl to a party (shown above). The main character, Eddie Birdlace, unexpectedly develops feelings for his date and what follows will touch the romantic in you; at least it did with me.  The cast does the musical justice and this was probably my favorite production of their entire season. While the lead characters did a fine job I was especially taken by the crass and sassy supporting character, Marcy, who made me laugh every time she was on stage.

I’d love to get the thoughts of any women who may be familiar with the story or those who go to the SpeakEasy Stage production. This makes for a great date night option or evening spent with friends. Get your tickets, (they start at just $25) and tell me what you think.

This weekend the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York City is hosting their 6th annual Gay Erotic Art Fair. The fair is free and open to the public and will have an opening reception tonight from 6-8pm in the NYC museum located at 127-B Prince Street. The fair includes approximately a dozen artists who create gay erotic art.  The dates and times of the art fair are below.

Opening reception: Friday, May 13, 6-8pm
Saturday: 12-6pm
Sunday: 12-6pm

MA State Senate approves transgender rights bill

Public Accommodations Bill in MA, Transgender Rights, LGBT rightsStanding in stark contrast to North Carolina (boo, hiss) Massachusetts State Senate on Thursday approved a bill that would ban discrimination against transgender people in public accommodations. You may recall this was the source of much discontent at last month’s Boston Spirit Magazine, LGBT Executive Networking Night when keynote speaker, Gov. Charlie Baker, was booed off the stage because he wouldn’t come out in support of the bill.

The legislation expands a 2011 state law that previously banned discrimination against transgender people in the workplace and housing. The legislation now heads to the MA House where it is expected to pass and will put MA in good company, joining 17 other states and D.C. that have already banned discrimination against transgender people in public accommodations.
