Halloween in Boston’s South End

BostonEven though I am not in Boston this weekend, I have been appreciating the spirit in which my neighborhood prepares for Halloween.  While pumpkins are on virtually every step a lot of neighbors take to decorating their buildings and even the street with a lot of spirit and creativity.

Here are a few pictures from Waltham Street and Union Park in the South End.BostonBoston

If Disney characters were gay

Disney character gender-swapsTT Brett’s Disney doodles were featured on Attitude Magazine’s website earlier this week, showcasing characters from some of your favorite classics in an entirely different light. I think she did a great job and thought I’d share her work.  You can see more of Brett’s work by visiting her blog, Let There Be Doodles.

BosGuy brain teaser

BosGuy brain teaserEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, feel free to get help – share it with a friend or colleague to see if you can figure it out together.

This week I am re-posting last year’s Halloween themed riddle that was given to me by a school teacher.  I’ll confirm answers later in the day so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance.

This week’s riddle:  What do you get when you cross a black cat with a lemon?

New Greek restaurant coming to South End

George Greek Restaurant South EndAnother vacant space in the South End will soon be opening as a restaurant. One Union Park in the South End, previously occupied by Yakitori Zai and before that Joe V’s is being renovated and will open as a moderately priced Greek restaurant.

Opening just down the street from the neighborhood’s Greek Orthodox Church and in the heart of the South End – one couldn’t ask for a better location for this tiny restaurant space which has been closed since July 2013 when Yakitori Zai shuttered after being open for 13 months.

The South End has several Greek delicatessens but no restaurants and I’m sure the owners are hoping to fill that void.  At this time I’m not sure what the restaurant will be called or any other details other than a targeted opening for early next year. If you have any information reach out to me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Casa Valentina at SpeakEasy Stage through November 28

boston arts, boston theater, theatreEarlier this week Sergio and I attended the SpeakEasy Stage production of Casa Valentina at the Calderwood Pavilion on Tremont Street in the South End.

The play is set in 1962 at a Catskills resort that has seen better days and centers around a group of heterosexual men who secretly gather to dress and behave like women. The funny play – and it is really very funny – gets a bit serious when they are challenged to publicly reveal their female alter-egos in the pursuit of greater political acceptance. Harvey Fierstein wrote this play and his wit is evident throughout. The SpeakEasy Stage cast does a good job delivering his sometimes caustic comments and many hilarious Oscar Wilde quotes. Sergio and I found ourselves laughing along with the audience regularly and thought this was one of the funnier performances we’ve seen this year. Tickets remain available and will run through Saturday, November 28th.

Fenway HIV study needs you: Help spread the word

HIV Testing, AIDS, Fenway Health, LGBT health, gay health, mens healthEarlier this spring I wrote about an ongoing national study that the Fenway is participating in that follows 400 gay couples, called Stronger Together.

Stronger Together is a research study that aims to improve the sexual health of male-male couples through unique testing opportunities. HIV infections still occur and it remains both a deeply personal and difficult issue to talk about and that is the real issue: lack of communication.

If you would like to help be part of the solution, Fenway Health would like to hear from you. Participants receive up to $350 ($700 per couple). For more information and to see if you are eligible please call 781.479.2330 or email StrongerTogetherBoston@gmail.com.

Who may be eligible to participate?
Male-Male couples over the age of 18
One partner is HIV+  (serodiscordant couples)
Couples willing to test for HIV and STIs together

How you can help?
Sign up for the study if you are eligible.
Tell your friends about the study and help spread the word.
