Restaurant review: Fig and Olive 5th Avenue

Fig and Olive NYCFig & Olive has six locations (3 in Manhattan alone). The restaurant’s menu is inspired by cuisine from the Riviera and coastal regions of the South of France, Italy and Spain.   When you first enter the 5th Avenue location you notice beautifully packaged olive oils available for purchase next to a long, white marble bar that seemed more like something out of Southern California than NYC.  The upstairs dining room has large, beautiful potted olive trees and rosemary plants. The name and first impression gave everyone high hopes for dinner and while I enjoyed my meal, I was the only one to leave satisfied, which makes me wonder about the consistency of the kitchen.

Fig and Olive 5th Avenue New YorkOur server was very attentive and brought over a sampling of olive oils and thinly sliced focaccia bread after we had ordered a bottle of some delicious full bodied, Italian red wine. I started with the Fig & Olive Salad for $19 that was plated with romaine lettuce figs, sliced apples, manchego, sweet gorgonzola, tomato, walnuts and dressed with a lip smacking fig balsamic and olive oil (of course). I thought the salad was one of the best I’ve had in recent memory and could eat this every night.

Fig and Olive 5th Avenue NYCA second bottle of the same wine was ordered and arrived as our main dishes were served.  I had opted for the Fig & Olive Chicken Tajine for $27 which included side plates that contained couscous with cilantro, toasted almond and harissa.  The chicken and the sauce accompanying the main dish was incredibly flavorful and enhanced by the wine selection (much thanks to my colleague who selected it).

I think the reason I may have enjoyed my meal so much more than my colleagues was the fact that I intentionally ordered items the waiter recommended. One of my colleagues thought the meat she ordered lacked flavor; another who had pasta described it as ‘goopy’ and thought it overcooked.  My only disappointment with the dinner was the fact that my colleagues didn’t feel the same as I did about my meal.

I love Anderson Cooper and stories like this just make me love him even more.  Last week Derrick Gordon who plays for the University of Massachusetts basketball team came out as the first gay player in Division 1 men’s college basketball.

After Anderson Cooper tweeted a congratulatory message to Gordon, disgraced Canadian sports anchor Damian Goddard, who was fired back in 2011 for anti-gay comments, tweeted Anderson.

I love it when Anderson gets all sassy.

Boston Pride musical acts announced

Boston prideEarlier today Boston Pride announced the five musical acts will headline the Boston Pride Festival on Saturday, June 14th from noon to 6pm at Boston’s City Hall Plaza. This year’s entertainment includes: Mary Lambert,  A Great Big WorldAlex NewellJD Samson & Men , and Jeanie Tracy.

4/15/2014 Update: I was contacted by an employee of The Trophy Room who confirmed the Saturday Block Party will indeed take place as in past years outside the Chandler Inn.

Boston Pride according to BosGuyWith Fritz no longer at the corner of Chandler and Berkeley, I’m wondering if the unofficial block party that typically follows the parade on Saturday will still take place there.  Last year AIDS Action Committee (the beneficiary of the Saturday block party) merged with Fenway Health so I’m unsure of the status of that event.  Anyone happen to know?

BosGuy cooks cauliflower (part 2)

BosGuy cooksThis past February I wrote about cooking cauliflower in this post. This past weekend I picked up cauliflower and decided I’d experiment with trying to make a version of mashed potatoes but in lieu of using the spud, I’d swap it out with cauliflower. The ingredients I used included: one head of cauliflower, one clove of garlic, 7 oz of plain Greek yogurt, skim milk (sorry – I didn’t measure), 1 tablespoon of butter, salt and pepper to taste.

Roasted cauliflower and garlicThe first step included chopping the cauliflower and roasting it alongside a head of garlic in the oven for 30 minutes at 400 F. I let the cauliflower and garlic rest for about 10-15 minutes to cool then I added them along with the remainder of the ingredients in a blender.

BosGuy cooks cauliflowerIn hindsight I should have used my little Cuisinart because the blender was too deep but after a bit of cursing I was able to get everything to work and puree the ingredients.  It was at this point that I added the skim milk to try and help with the blending process.

BosGuy cooks cauliflowerWhile I’m relatively happy with this cooking experiment there are a few things I might do differently. My mother suggested that I steam the cauliflower because it will add moisture. I’m inclined to agree and will try that next time.  Do you have a recipe for something similar? Tell me about it by emailing me or leaving instructions in the comments section.

Tremont Crossing

Tremont CrossingJust a few blocks from the South End in Roxbury (near the Ruggles T station) is Feldco Development’s, Tremont Crossing. The large mixed use development spans 8 acres near the Melnea Cass Blvd / Tremont Street intersection.

The project includes nearly 1 million square feet (SF); 438,275 SF of retail, 300 residential units, 200 hotel rooms, 233,784 SF of office space, 37,520 SF of museum space and 1,502 parking spaces.  I’m not sure when construction begins but this is a massive project.  The space has yet to secure a hotel but last week BJ’s Wholesale announced that they would lease 90,000 SF at Tremont Crossing. If the lease is signed BJs new store (and I believe the first in the city) would open in the spring of 2017. I’m curious to see who else might come to this development as it could make for a viable alternative to the overly congested South Bay shopping center.
