Nothing gold can stay

One of my favorite poems ever written is by Robert Frost.  Each autumn I post his poem, Nothing gold can stay.  It is obvious that Frost was inspired by the fall foliage in New England when he wrote this poem back in 1923.  Nothing gold can stay won the 1924 Pulitzer prize for poetry.

I hope you enjoy the poem as much as I do.

Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Restaurant review: Firebrand Saints

Last month I was invited to Firebrand Saints on the first night their kitchen was open and serving food to the public.  For this reason, I’m going to defer my customary review which takes into account the service and can be critical of the food.  This is not to infer that either the service or food was displeasing, but it was hardly a typical night that can provide an accurate review.

The restaurant / bar is located in the heart of Kendall Square in Cambridge and joins a handful of other new dining establishments in the area.  Local media has joked that Firebrand Saints is marketing itself to MIT, Mensa-types, and FBS plays this up with cheeky touches like bathroom signage written in Japanese, reminding employees to wash their hands.  The bar must have 20 outlets for one to charge your phone, tablet or laptop, and there is plenty of visual stimuli to keep even a dull date going with the ever changing LED programmed words racing behind the bar and distracting wall projections.

The menu is a bit pedestrian for my liking but the price point makes it a place you can visit a few times each week without putting a serious dent in your wallet. The bar serves an excellent assortment of ales and with John Drew (former bartender at the South End’s Anchovies) those who crave cocktails will find an adept mixologist who is quick, personable and excellent at pouring drinks.

Below are: FBS-styled deviled eggs ($4) cold poached lobster salad ($18) and sirloin burger ($9).  You can view their entire menu online here.

Firebrand Saints is located at 1 Broadway, Cambridge MA                                         (617) 401-3399 – Reservations accepted

November is lung cancer awareness month

More people die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer

So I’m saying WTF? (Where’s the funding?)

In 2007, 200,000+ people were diagnosed with lung cancer and nearly 160,000 died from it (and that’s just in the US). Despite the fact lung cancer is so lethal and prevalent, funding and awareness remains pitifully low.  At this point in my life, I remain largely unaffected by lung cancer (thank goodness), but many others are not nearly as fortunate.

Did you know?

  • Lung cancer takes more lives then breast, prostate, colon and pancreatic cancers combined.
  • Non-smoking women are the fastest growing lung cancer population.

I don’t often use my blog as a bully pulpit, but I’d really appreciate it if my US readers would give pause to an initiative that is the brain child of a woman named Diane Daniels Legg.  Diane is working fervently to get more US Senators and Representatives to sign onto the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction (S.752 inthe senate and H.R. 1394 in the House of Representatives). This Act was introduced in both the Senate and House, and it calls for a comprehensive research plan addressing all aspects of lung cancer.

Learn more by visiting the Lung Cancer Advocacy Alliance and contact your elected representative to ask them to help fund the Lung Cancer Mortality Reduction (S.752 inthe senate and H.R. 1394 in the House of Representatives).

This post is dedicated to Diane Legg and Terry O’Brien and in memory of Helen Panter who passed away from lung cancer in 2006.

Cool cocktails

Each Wednesday my local wine shop, Brix, hosts local mixologists to come in and make interesting cocktails you can sample, then make at your home.  This week’s guest was the bar manager from Eastern Standard, Kevin Martin.

Kevin is a friendly and approachable and both drinks are his own personal creations, but can be made by anyone at Eastern Standard upon request.  Thanks to Kevin taking time to show me how to make the drink, now you too can learn to make two equally delicious but very different exotic cocktails.

Drink 1: Equinox                                                                                                                              This cocktail definitely screams “Autumn” with its hints of apple and spices.         1.5 ounces  Daron Fine Calvados                                                                                              3/4 ounce Fresh lemon juice                                                                                                           3/4 ounce Spiced Syrup                                                                                                                   Dash of Angostura Bitters                                                                                               Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice and shake.  Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a twist of lemon.

Drink 2: Houdini Cocktail                                                                                                                This is a great cocktail for gin lovers.                                                                                     1.5 ounces Bols Genever                                                                                                              3/4 ounce Benedictine                                                                                                                   3/4 Cocchi Americano                                                                                                                    Dash of orange bitters                                                                                                                       Combine all ingredients into a mixing glass, add ice and stir. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a twist of lemon.

Adele in Boston for throat surgery

Twenty-three year old singing sensation, Adele, has been spotted around Boston quite a bit lately, dining out with friends at Red Lantern most recently.  She will be undergoing surgery for what The Boston Globe describes as “an increasingly common throat ailment”.  Let’s hope this gifted singer and song writer will make a speedy recovery and will be better able to take care of her throat by kicking her smoking habit which can’t be helping although is not necessarily related to the  hemorrhaging, which has caused her to cancel tours and now seek medical attention from Dr. Steven Zeitels.

Want to read more about what is ailing Adele and this increasingly common throat ailment? You can read the full story here.

WTF is this? It doesn’t fit in my CD player

I saw this picture on Taylor Chrien Tumblr page and thought it was absolutely hilarious.  As a child of the 80s, I can’t tell you how many of these strange looking rectangular pieces of plastic I owned.

BosGuy cooks: Eggplant red sauce

This is a heartier version of a traditional pasta sauce.  It does have the added step of prepping the eggplant but the effort is worthwhile and you can freeze this to have through the week.  It takes 45mins – 1hour to prepare.  The recipe below will provide 8-10 servings.

Prep work:                                                                                                                                               -Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C)                                                                    -Thinly slice 1 medium sized eggplant, salt each side (let rest for 5mins per side)  -Chop 1/4 of a sweet onion and 1 garlic clove                                                                        -Cover large pan with olive oil and turn on high heat

Place each sliced eggplant in hot oil for 1-minute each side.  The oil will absorb into the eggplant turning the centers more golden.  Remove from pan and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil and let rest for 1-2 minutes. Place the eggplant in oven-safe container, sprinkle the diced onions and garlic and cover with tin foil.  Let it cook for 15 minutes.

Making the gravy:                                                                                                                                Remove the excess oil from the pan used for the eggplant add remainder of diced onion (3/4 of the sweet onion that remains) and 1-2 cloves of minced garlic.  Add 2 cans of San Marzano whole peeled tomatoes (mash these after you add). You may blend the sauce after cooked if you prefer a less lumpy sauce). Add 1tsp of salt; 1 tsp of black pepper; and large carrot (minced).

When the eggplant is done, take it out of the oven and add to the red gravy.  Use a potato masher to grind the eggplant and tomatoes.  Keep heat on medium and stir every few minutes with pan partially covered.  Let the liquid reduce and thicken for 20-30 minutes.  The last 5 minutes you cook the sauce add half a dozen chopped basil leaves and give one last stir.

Cooking hints:                                                                                                                                          -San Marzano tomatoes are ideal for sauces because they are so sweet.                     -Using a minced carrot will cut the acidity to a tomato based sauce.                             -You can substitute 1 tbsp of sugar if you don’t have a carrot.                                         -I like to make this on the weekends to use through the week.

Halloween in the South End

Unseasonably cool temps didn’t prevent thousands of children from trick or treating last night.  The neighborhood embraced the spirit of the holiday decorating their homes, sitting on their stoop (sipping alcohol-laced beverages to help ward off the chill of the evening), and doling out candy of every variety.   Residents on Waltham Street once again decorated their street with cobwebs, hanging bodies and statues as well as dry ice, giant spiders and spooky costumes of every variety imaginable.

Every year a neighbor on Union Park Street demonstrates his exceptional pumpkin carving skills.  This year he paid tribute to the late Steve Jobs, carving a series of Apple-themed jack-o-lanterns and lighting them beautifully.

Chilly Halloween

This year Halloween has been all tricks and no treats. The earliest snowstorm in modern history walloped the Northeast this weekend and although there is no snow in Boston, the temperatures are ridiculously low.

The weather all last week was rainy and cold and unfortunately the chilly temps will remain through today before rising to a more seasonable mid to high-50s tomorrow.

Addicted to MEM Tea Co. “Rose Scented” tea

The South End Buttery first turned me on to a local tea company called MEM Tea Imports. I’m no connoisseur, but I do enjoy tea in the evening.  MEM specializes in high quality loose leaf teas for the food service industry, but Cardullo’s Gourmet Shoppe in Harvard Square sells their tea.

Last weekend when I went to watch some of the Head of the Charles Regatta down by Harvard, I made a quick stop in this gourmet shoppe and purchased MEM Tea Imports: Rose Scented blend which is one of MEM’s scented black teas.  I’ve been including wildflower honey with the tea which only enhances the smooth taste and heightens the fragrance.  If you’re not a tea drinker, I understand that this is probably of little interest, but if you enjoy tea, give this local company a try either at The South End Buttery or online at Cardullo’s Gourmet Shoppe and let me know what you think.

Timothy proposes

Last night my family just got a bit larger… My brother Timothy surprised his girlfriend, Ashley, by proposing to her at their home in the North End.

After dinner he suggested they go to 28 degrees a martini bar in Boston where they had their first date to celebrate.  Although Ashley had no idea, Timothy had planned this out and clued in both families so we could be there to surprise and congratulate them.

It was a memorable night and a fun way to meet Ashley’s family who are friendly and easy-going.  There is something very nice about the way my brother planned the evening.  They were able to enjoy the moment alone together as well as share the evening with both families, making everyone feel a part of the special night.  Well done, Timothy and congratulations to you both. I couldn’t be happier for you.

Have fun this weekend

Although Halloween is not technically until Monday, October 31st, costume parties will be in full swing this weekend with guys looking for tricks to treat.

Provincetown has a series of parties this weekend including what I believe will be the final Tea Dance at the Boatslip for the year.

Enjoy your time wherever you are but be smart and think twice about your costume before setting foot outside.
