The Divine Sister

The Divine Sister is now in its final week at the Roberts Studio Theatre (at the Calderwood Pavilion) in the South End.

I’m not sure if I completely understand the write up below which I swiped from the SpeakEasy Stage Co. website, but I’m intrigued.

The Divine Sister – written by Charles Busch, the comic genius behind such classics as Die, Mommie, Die!; Psycho Beach Party; and Vampire Lesbians of Sodom, is a gleefully twisted tale that tells the story of an indomitable Mother Superior trying to cope with a young postulant experiencing “visions,” a sensitive schoolboy in need of mentoring, a mysterious nun visiting from Berlin, and a former suitor intent on luring her away from her vows.

Interested?  The show closes one week from today, Saturday, November 19th. Tickets may be purchased online here.

Restaurant review: Teatro

Teatro is an Italian restaurant nestled between Boston’s theater district and Downtown Crossing across the street from the Boston Common.

The restaurant is part of the Columbus Hospitality Group which own several high profile dining establishments in the city and like many of it’s sister restaurants, has stood the test of time.

The menu is mostly comprised of handmade pastas and risotto dishes $20 (half portions for $10 available) and main dishes (all $22).  The average cost of dinner for two including a shared starter, two main courses, a shared dessert and one drink per person (not including tip) is $80-$90. The restaurant can be quite loud and bustling so one shouldn’t assume a fine dining experience when visiting Teatro, but the food is consistently good, reasonably priced and a fun place to meet friends for a good meal.

Depicted below is the Rigatoni with classic Ragu Bolognese ($20) and Chicken Milanese with tomatoes, arugula and Parmesan ($22). Dinner was very good and the portions are filling enough for even those with a healthy appetite.  However, we were undeterred and opted to also sample the dessert menu. Depicted below is the Gelato and Chocolate Crema, which is like a thick mousse and sure to please a chocoholic. (All desserts are $7.)

Teatro is open Tuesday through Sunday and located at 177 Tremont Street. Reservations are strongly recommended, 617-778-6841.

This has been making the rounds online but I thought it worth sharing. I hope everyone feels as if they too are getting “more awesome”.

Same sex relationships (by the numbers)

It is easy to focus on the negative or feel frustrated that perceptions are not changing fast enough, but with regards to acceptance of the GLBT community and recognizing same sex relationships, this would be foolish.  Of course, there is a lot of progress that needs to be achieved, but rarely on issues is time such an enemy to those who oppose recognizing the rights of our community.  Take a moment to consider the progress made in the last decade.

10% – (Actually slightly more.) The percentage of states in the US that currently allow same sex marriage.  They are as follows: Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Iowa, and as of June this year – New York.  In addition, Washington D.C. allows same sex marriage.  One decade ago no state recognized same sex marriages.

46% – The percentage of Americans who support same sex couples marrying (a decade ago this was 11%).  New polls on marriage equality in 7 more states show mostly positive results for marriage equality advocates.

60% – The number of Fortune 500 companies currently offering same sex work benefits, including health coverage to their employees.  This represents 100%+ increase over the number of Fortune 500 companies that offered same sex work benefits a decade ago.

80% – Current estimates from the US Census Bureau suggest there are now slightly fewer than 650,000 same sex households in the United States; an 80% jump from a decade ago.

Happy hump day

Here is my perverse take on wishing you a Happy Hump Day (a.k.a. #HHD).

BosGuy cooks: Italian meatballs

I think everyone raised in an Italian-American family learns how to cook meatballs.  They were a staple in my childhood and although you can buy them at your local grocer, I prefer to make my own. I think they taste better and are a far healthier alternative.  I usually make meatballs on the weekend and refrigerate them so I can have them through the week; they always seem to taste even better a few days later anyway.

Prep and cooking time is approximately 1 hour and this recipe will make ~18 meatballs.  Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.  Listed below are the ingredients. Note that the following are missing from the list: 1 tsp of salt, 1 tsp of pepper, 1 tsp of Italian seasoning (all combined) as well as  2 garlic cloves minced which I include with the onion and finally 1/4 cup of water.I like to separate the ingredients as depicted above, place the meat in a large mixing container and combine all the ingredients at the same time.  Kneed the ingredients together until everything is fully incorporated.  Once combined, I like to cover and let it rest for 5-10 minutes so the liquids can be absorbed.Roll out the meatballs by hand and try to keep them to 1.5″ in diameter. If they are much larger they are more likely to fall apart and lose their shape due to the amount of moisture.  I find it easier to make all the meatballs at once then put them into a pan on high heat with olive oil.  By searing the meatballs on all sides for a minute or less will help the meatball retain its shape while cooking. In a baking dish add a minimal amount of red sauce before adding the seared meatballs.  This will prevent them from sticking to the dish while cooking in the oven. I add red sauce and sprinkle cheese on top of each meatball.

Cover with foil and cook for 20 minutes (note larger meatballs may require longer cooking time).  Take the foil off and let cook for another 10 minutes, after removing from the oven let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Hints:                                                                                                                                                          – I like to have extra red sauce made when serving meatballs.  Earlier this month I shared a recipe for an eggplant red sauce, but use whatever you like.                      – I use mushrooms because they add so much flavor and incorporate into the meat better than any other vegetable and it helps make them lighter (avoiding “food coma” that can result from a heavy meat dish)                                                          – If you prefer to add some heat to this recipe, include a tsp of crushed red pepper flakes for each pound of meat used and use a spicy marinara red sauce.

Senator, you are no Kennedy

Since Senator Scott Brown took office in 2010, he has done a good job courting media and honing his image, but I’m not a fan, and I will not be voting for him next year.  A new advert from the League of Conservation Voters points to a cozy relationship Brown has developed with big oil. So much for being a voice for the people or a champion for the environment.

In addition to his poor environmental record, Brown has continued to largely ignore the gay community in MA.  Brown’s questionable environmental and LGBT ratings really are troublesome, but the fact that he’s done little to work with Obama and play the role of a negotiator who can go between both parties to help break the gridlock is perhaps what I find most disappointing.  I thought his image as a “moderate” meant that he’d play a leading role like Sen. Snowe (ME) or the former Sen. Chaffee (RI).  However he’s opted to fall lock-step with the Republican leadership.  What a pity, because had he opted another path he could have truly been a “maverick” and made a difference while elevating the profile of the distinguished seat he currently represents.

Do I have high expectations from Sen Brown?  Absolutely and so should you.

It is Monday, put on your happy face

My promise to politicians

Most of those who oppose same sex marriage hide behind thinly veiled prejudices shrouded in moral overtones that reek of discrimination.   Am I a one issue-voter; absolutely not, but if you are not in favor of same-sex marriage you probably won’t get my vote.  Moreover, I’ll have a tough time respecting you and will likely work to financially support those who will run against you.
