Mirror Mirror

I rarely go to the movies, mostly because so few of them hold any interest, and when something does seem to catch my attention, the movie reviews are enough to keep me away. However, every once in awhile a movie is announced that piques my interest and I’m likely to see no matter what the critiques have to say. At the risk of appearing gayer than Christmas (sorry Santa),  Mirror Mirror which comes out next year is one of those films.

The movie’s story line is both familiar and interesting, the cast looks fantastic, and the costuming appears stunning.  If the movie is half as enticing as the official trailer I may even go opening weekend to see this film which stars, Julia Roberts as the evil queen, Lily Collins as Snow White, and Nathan Lane as Brighton.

Wicked Awesome: 101.7 WFNX Flashback

Boston radio station 101.7 WFNX will invite many of their past hosts and shows back onto the airwaves to kick off the holiday season. The playlist, production and voices will all take listeners back ten, fifteen, even twenty years into the WFNX archives. The Flashback weekend will kick off this coming Wednesday November 23rd at 7pm and culminates on Sunday, November 27th. Listeners will be treated to live, new shows featuring Morning Guy Tai with Henry Santoro, a live X-Night with host Mike Gioscia, Spin Cycle with Liquid Todd, and on-air shifts featuring Storm Zbel, Kurt St. Thomas, Kat Corbett, Neal Robert, Joanne Doody, Bill Abbate, Duane Bruce, and many more. Growing up, I listened to WFNX religiously.  This radio station is the reason I became obsessed with bands like the Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Eco and the Bunnymen, New Order, etc.  I’m so listening to them and thanks to the advent of the internet, if you like that sort of programming you can too online.

Have a great weekend

Time to focus on fitness

It has been awhile since I’ve talked about my fitness and work out regimen and with the holiday season set to go into overdrive next week here in the United States, it seems like an appropriate moment to bring it up (again).

My job and the weather tend to greatly influence my commitment to the gym, which is really dumb when you consider its a combination of vanity and genuine interest in my own personal health that is the reason I work out.  However, September through the Thanksgiving holiday is terribly hectic as is the new year and much of spring.  Couple that with the fact that it is downright freezing in Boston and suddenly previously considered lame excuses not to go to the gym sound legit.  The days of when I would barely visit a gym in a month are long gone thanks to the fact that I work out with a trainer whom I do my best to see two times a week, but I need to get my butt in gear so I’m going to the gym on those off-days when Stu (my trainer – depicted at the start of the post) isn’t there pushing me.  Anyone else struggling with their gym routine?  Any gym rats out there who would like to provide  some pearls of wisdom on how you stay so focused despite all the distractions?

Boston Music Awards

Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Check out the Boston Music Awards on Sunday, November 20th at the swanky Liberty Hotel in Beacon Hill. Now in its 24th year, this program is designed to recognize local talent and help encourage the local music industry.

Any musician, producer or industry professional who is a New England native or has lived in the area for a substantial period of time, actively working is eligible for consideration for appropriate BMA’s.  Tickets are still available to attend this event and can be purchased online here.  You can also follow the chatter on Twitter at Twitter.com/BMAs_Boston.

Do you identify as LGBT?

According to The Harvard Crimson, Harvard University announced it may add language to its admission application which would allow prospective students to identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

The dean of admissions and financial aid William R. Fitzsimmons is quoted in the Crimson as saying the move is intended to be more of a welcoming signal to “students who are grappling with the issue of [sexual orientation] or gender identity.” Students may also be asked to write an optional essay to express their personal stories and experiences.      A final decision on the inclusion of the category will be made in February, but I think this is a great step in the right direction by a leading university in the United States.  Harvard’s potential decision is part of a larger discussion within higher education on the inclusion of such questions in admission applications.

Restaurant review: Lucca Back Bay

Last January I shared a glowing review of Lucca Back Bay. I returned again for a visit in the spring of 2011 and had a similar experience so I was happy to go again this past weekend to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

Perhaps we had a new waiter, but at nearly every turn she detracted from the dining experience.  She did not offer the night’s two specials and actually forgot the second entirely.  Throughout the meal errors like not filling empty wine glasses or inquiring if we’d like to order another bottle when we ran empty all happened one after another, making me wonder if I was eating at a quiet discount Italian chain.

Problems with service were exacerbated because one of the friends did not care for the gnocchi they ordered.   To make sure he was not being overly critical I sampled his plate, and agree it was (at best) mediocre.   Lest you think I’m overly negative, I would like to assure you that we did have a good time (after all its the company that makes the evening) and the four other main dishes were delicious.

For those contemplating a visit, pasta plates range from $23-$36 and main courses or “secondi” range from $28-$36. Dinner for two (appetizers, main dishes and a shared dessert – not including drinks or tip) is ~ $90.00.

Boston area bargain shoppers rejoice

The Boston Globe has an article in today’s business section about a significant mixed use development in Somerville to rejuvenate Assembly Row.  Plans for this ‘mixed use neighborhood’ include condos, a hotel, a new IKEA, a new orange line metro station and more than 30 retail outlet stores. Typically outlet stores are not found so close to a downtown location, and this would be the closest concentration of outlets in Boston just a few miles from the heart of Boston.

According to the Globe article, Federal Realty has begun building roads and other infrastructure at the 45-acre site. They plan to begin construction on the first buildings early next year: a pair of apartment blocks with 450 units and street-level stores, being developed by AvalonBay Communities Inc.

BosGuy is a Cultcha Vultcha

In early September I wrote about all the great local theater companies in Boston in my post, 2011-2012 season (which was at the time just starting).  The productions these companies pull together are not as elaborate as travelling Broadway and the National touring companies that come to Boston’s Theater District, but they can be surprisingly entertaining and tickets are half the price.

On Friday, I’m off to see The Divine Sister, which closes this weekend and is playing at the Roberts Studio Theatre in the Calderwood Pavilion.  The program which was written by Charles Busch is probably more bawdy and lewd than anything playing currently in Boston’s theater district and that suits me just fine.  We’re going to be joined by two other couples and make a night of this which is a welcome change from hitting the same bars or restaurants.

Have you attended a local theater production lately?  There are so many good shows playing right now; support your local arts community.

This post brought to you by: Sir Richard’s Condom Company

I love SWAG so I’d like to say thank you very much to Sir Richard’s condom company for surprising me with some of their product and a letter encouraging me to try their brand and “WRAP UP MY PACKAGE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON”, which runs from World AIDS Day on December 1 through Valentines Day, February 14th.

At the risk of over-sharing, I’ll admit I have developed a degree of brand loyalty with these purchases and become accustomed to buying a particular brand, but I’m not so close minded that when such beautifully packaged “gifts” arrive at my doorstep I won’t give them a try.  And of course I don’t want to appear rude or ungrateful so I equate this pause to the same sort of advertising NPR does when they take a moment to thank their sponsors.

Intrigued by Sir Richard’s Condom Company?  I was too – this is what I learned.

  • They are made with 100% natural latex (without caein), which apparently makes them vegan friendly – Who Knew?
  • They are available nationally at Whole Foods (that’s where I shop!)
  • Check ’em out online at  www.sirrichards.com, on Twitter @MySirRichards, or on FB at /SirRichardsCondoms

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome. If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. Below are this week’s #MenOfTwitter.

If so inclined, leave them a nice comment and start following on Twitter.

deedos86 – A.K.A. Joe, is the first Egyptian I’ve ever featured as a Men of Twitter.  Joe is more than just good looks though. He is currently studying linguistics to become an interpreter.  He’s very comfortable in front of the camera and has done some modelling (no surprise there). He also loves the water and plays water polo. I’ve never seen a water polo match before but perhaps I should look into this because I think I’d become a big fan. #EgyptianGod

finoccs616 – or “Bryan” as his friends call him, is from Boston.  A recent nursing graduate (congratulate him he recently passed the boards), he has ambitions to be a Pediatric Oncology nurse.  This year Bryan started a breast cancer charity fashion event which happened last month (you can learn more by following on Twitter, @CatwalkForACure). As if that wasn’t enough he is now creating a new non-profit focused on raising funds for local organizations and charities through visual and performing arts.  #HandsomePhilanthropist

JeffChatterton – “Hey Mr. DJ put a record on…” Those who frequent NYC’s EasternBloc may be familiar with this handsome Canadian who works as a DJ and promoter for the bar.  He will be the DJ at the bar’s one-year anniversary of “Messy Mary’s Mondays” on the 21st next week.  Want to find out more? Check out his blog which he posts to about once a week at www.jeffchatterton.blogspot.com #MusicMan

dBar Harvest Tea Dance

As expected, the dbar Tea Dance on Sunday, November 13th attracted a large and friendly crowd.  It was a gorgeous fall evening and many people preferred to cocktail in the open air of dBar’s patio, but it was a bit too chilly for me to spend much time there since I opted to only wear a t-shirt.

“Gay Jim” from KISS 108 FM helped keep everyone in good spirits with one dance song after another and the bar staff seemed to be pouring drinks at the speed of light limiting the amount of time you had to wait.

Thank you dBar for another great Tea Dance.

Cocktail Sunday

Sad Sunday has already arrived and don’t want to think about the inevitable Monday morning blues?  There are two events today that can make you forget all about tomorrow (and by forget I mean black out).

The dbar Harvest Tea Dance (4Pm – 8PM) will gather an early crowd of mostly gay men looking for an excuse to get out, chat with friends and listen to KISS 108 disc jockey “Gay Jim” play a heavy rotation of dance music.  There is no cover for the fall – sorry – “Harvest” party so bring your friends but arrive early since parking can be a royal pain in the you know what.

LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails) is hosting a cocktail party at the House of Blues from 5PM – 11PM.  The event includes cocktails, comedy, Prince tribute band LoveSexy and a Left bank (Cambridge) – Right bank (Boston) bartender competition.  Cost: $50

Madonna sings acapella

OMG, I love this video of Madonna. If you are a fan you’ll want to watch this. Thank you to Kevin over at The Lisp for bringing this to my attention.
