Men in kilts

I can’t help but wonder why the guy on the left appears to have a knife tucked into his right sock. Seems like an odd accessory for your wedding day.

May this week mancandy post distract you from the fact that it is yet again a Monday morning.

American Repertory Theater’s 2021 / 2022 season is shaping up to be one of their best yet

Across the river and down Brattle Street in Harvard Square is the American Repertory Theater. This award winning theater company consistently produces innovative, new shows that attract some of America’s most talented actors from Broadway to Hollywood and this season is no exception.

Recently I was able to attend MacBeth in Stride which will be closing Sunday, November 14th. This world premiere rock musical written by and starring Obie Award and Lilly Award winning director, actor, and musician, Whitney White had me as enthralled as when I saw Jagged Little Pill world premiere in the same theater in the spring of 2018. This isn’t the Shakespeare you learned in school. Whitney deconstructs the play from the point of view of Lady MacBeth. However, I think WBUR’s review sums up the show best saying, “Part theater, part concert, part real-talk — the show is a fascinating deconstruction of “Macbeth” that reimagines its leading lady as a boss Black woman angling for power.”

The ever so easy on they eyes, Charlie Thurston, who plays a backseat in this play as King MacBeth, is believeable in his role as he descends into madness after killing King Duncan at the urging of his manipulative and power hungry wife. The sassy three witches singing their version of “double, double toil and trouble” had my pulse racing and felt more like a rock concert than a play but like WBUR wrote “it works”. While the opportunity to see this show draws to a close, this powerhouse show will hopefully be taken on the road – if it does be sure to see it.

Don’t be bummed if you can’t see this show because in a few weeks time, the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) will world premiere another show that is going to be a must see (and perhaps work its way to Broadway) called, Wild: A Musical Becoming. The show which opens December 5th will star Tony Award Winning actress, Idina Menzel, Javier Muñoz (Broadway’s In the Heights and Hamilton), Deborah Craig (Broadway’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee), and many more. Here is the full list of cast members.

The A.R.T.’s line-up for the spring of 2022 looks to be equally exciting, including an environmental showdown in Ocean Filibuster and their final production of the season, a new production of the Tony Award-winning musical, 1776.

You heard it from me – make plans and get your tickets today.

Vintage gay

The photograph above is of gay men sunbathing in the 1950s at Bournemouth beach in England. It is one of several photos of men from the 1940s and 1950s about life in rural Wales at that time and how it has changed. The article written by the BBC in 2019 (read it here). The article focuses on Reg and George who lived in rural Wales. From their photos and stories, it is clear they built a life that while not totally open and often closeted was not devoid of love and happiness either.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Boston Pride Shuts Down: What’s the deal?

Boston Pride

Reverend Irene Monroe has penned an article in the new issue of Boston Spirit Magazine, “Why Shut Down Boston Pride?” (I’d love to include a link but at the time I wrote this Boston Spirit’s website still didn’t have the article online. How is that even possible? But I digress.)

The well written article starts back in June 2020 when Boston Pride hired two consultants to help them address the growing chorus of criticism that Linda DeMarco (President) and the Boston Pride Board was too secretive, inhospitable to new ideas or suggestions, and increasingly tone deaf – especially to the trans and non-white LGBTQ+ members of our community. For many, Boston Pride’s mishandling of and the resulting tepid response to the murder of George Floyd had become a tipping point.

The goal of engaging the consultants was to help Boston Pride transform – empowering and engaging different members of the community as well as to help refocus and reaffirm Pride’s commitment to all of Boston’s LGBTQ community. What happened instead was the President of Boston Pride and the Board unilaterally stepped down and abruptly dissolved the organization. The work, the relationships and the fifty years of history associated with the organization was essentially deleted, leaving many in the community (yours truly included) wondering W-T-F?

Rev. Monroe wrote, “As our community reels from the shock of Boston Pride disbanding, questions remain unanswered around the organization’s finances.” I hate to think like that but it would be naive not to recognize how much money Boston Pride must have recieved in corporate sponsorships. But thus far Linda DeMarco and the Board have remained tightlipped, unwilling to talk to anyone, including Rev. Monroe.

The last response Rev. Monroe received from DeMarco was a few weeks ago via email where she said, “it has been a difficult time with closing down Boston Pride and all that goes with it, but we did it for the betterment of our community and for the future of our leaders.” I find that response difficult to take at face value. I know that Linda and the Boston Pride members have dedicated many hours to helping grow Boston Pride with the hope that they can empower and give voice to the LGBTQ community, but this last chapter of Boston Pride leaves a bitter taste and seems foul.

What’s Next?

It doesn’t seem like any one voice or direction has emerged from the ashes thus far. Time will tell what will happen as members of Boston’s LGBTQ community come together, but I can say that in light of the news that has come out about Boston Pride since its dissolution, it is hard for me to miss the organization.

Pie in the sky: Order your pies today

Vote for mayor: It’s election day in Boston

Two accomplished women with big ideas for how they can help to make Boston a better city are running for mayor and today is election day in the city.

Annissa Essaibi George and Michelle Wu are on the ballot and have been campaigning hard to get your vote. In full disclosure, I am (and always have been) supporting Michelle Wu. Her big ideas have drawn criticism as too “pie in the sky” and unrealistic, but I like her vision and how she thinks big. Having said that, no matter who you support, I hope that you will vote in this historic election to send a message that you care and are invested in the future of Boston.

Unsure if you’re registered, here’s how to check your voter registration status.

CITY OF BOSTON – ELECTION DEPARTMENT
POLLING LOCATIONS

Polls open from 7:00 am – 8:00 pm

Also, a heartfelt thank you to out-going Mayor Kim Janey for stepping in after Mayor Walsh left to take the role of US Secretary of Labor in Washington, D.C. She had to address significant public health challenges regarding COVID-19, an ongoing scandal with the Boston Police Department, and a challenging economy, but she will be presenting to whomever wins this election a healthier and stronger city than she inherited.
