Vintage gay

gay cowboysThis week’s photo dates back to the 1960s in Tucson, Arizona. I stumbled upon a website for the Tucson Gay Museum which collects images like these for the same reason I felt compelled to create this weekly post. You can learn more about the museum and their work at, tucsongaymuseum.org.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Eater Boston’s increasingly narrow view of Boston dining

Augustana BostonDespite the critical headline, I want to be clear that I like the Eater Boston blog. I often Tweet out and share their articles, but the blog, which describes itself as a “Food news and dining guides for Boston” does a terrible job of sharing news about and championing the dining scene of restaurants not in a downtown neighborhood, Cambridge or Somerville – and it appears to be getting worse.

Eater Boston maps illustrate my point

Boston’s ten largest neighborhoods by population are (in order): S. Dorchester, Roxbury, Brighton, Jamaica Plain, East Boston, Mattapan, South Boston, Hyde Park, West Roxbury and the South End. Combined these neighborhoods account for more than 60% of Boston’s total population. However, Eater Boston routinely overlook all but South Boston and the South End. What gives Eater?

Eater Boston needs to step up their game

Is Eater Boston really committed to providing food news and dining guides for Boston when the majority of residents’ neighborhoods are largely ignored? There is no doubt that the downtown neighborhoods have a more active dining scene, but it seems that communities south and west of The Fenway and South End are almost universally overlooked in practically every “map” and blog post. Watertown and Medford based restaurants are more likely to be featured than a restaurant in Dorchester and that’s just plain crazy.

I know Eater Boston can do better and want them to live up to their potential by providing all of Boston a chance to shine.  I’m asking Eater Boston to step up their game; stop fixating on the same 5-6 neighborhoods. Get to know the rest of Boston. Start to feature the dining scene in neighborhoods outside of downtown and encourage your readers to leave these downtown enclaves to visit hidden gems in places like Dorchester, Roxbury, Brighton, East Boston, Mattapan, etc.

Provincetown in an uproar over Cirque du Soleil

I love ProvincetownUPDATE: The Provincetown Independent Reports Cirque will not come to Provincetown this summer. Details here

Last month heads started to spin when it was reported that Cirque du Soleil would be coming to Provincetown for the summer. More than 70 members of the town’s entertainment community have formerly voiced opposition to the plan which has been shrouded in secrecy. Edge Media reported that town officials have signed non-disclosure agreements, but an announcement is expected at the town’s select board meeting tomorrow, Monday, February 10th.

While I can appreciate the appeal of Cirque du Soleil, I wanted to share my point of view (not that anyone asked but this blog affords me such indulgences).

  Provincetown should reject this plan

If the Cirque would like to come to Cape Cod, towns more centrally located like Hyannis are a far better fit; providing a larger population, better infrastructure and less strain on room inventory already stretched in the summer. Choosing a location at the edge of the Cape will require much of their audience to come from Ptown and surrounding communities.

As amazing as Provincetown’s homegrown arts and entertainment industry may be it is still a fragile thing and promoters cannot compete with the marketing budget and muscle of an international brand like Cirque. Cherished institutions like the Art House, Provincetown Theater, The Crown & Anchor, The Pilgrim House, etc… will be crushed and the arts landscape of Ptown will be left in the dust long after the Cirque packs up their big tent and pulls out of town.

I hope this plan is soundly rejected and any commitments that may have been made can be undone. The first step in making a change is for residents and business owners alike to show up in force on Monday to voice their opposition.

Mass Bears and Cubs coat drive: Share the warmth

gay bostonOne of my favorite LGBTQ social groups, Mass Bears and Cubs, is hosting their annual coat drive. You may have noticed that despite a healthy economy and low unemployment, there still are a number of people who are struggling. This is a fairly easy way you can help someone who may be down on their luck and in need of a winter coat to help them stay warm.

Both new and used coats can be donated by dropping off your coat(s) at either The Alley Bar in Downtown Crossing or Club Cafe in the South End. You have until next week so don’t delay. Your generosity won’t go unappreciated.

Mass Bears and Cubs Coat Drive ends Saturday, February 15th
