I want to dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Word of the day: Gifted

I like to think of my blog as an important, educational site that can help you expand your vocabulary.  Today’s vocabulary word is Gifted. I’m borrowing a photograph from April’s “Vintage Gay” post to help bring the definition to life.

Runnah (ˈɡiftəd/ adjective
Definition: having exceptional talent or natural ability.
Example: Those navy boys are certainly gifted.

Each Wednesday morning I post a photograph and ask readers to offer a funny caption.  Hopefully the caption below inspires you to share a few of your own.

Boston Flower Exchange could become a technology complex

Boston Flower Exchange

Last year The Abbey Group purchased the 5.6-acre parcel that has been home to the Boston Flower Exchange. Last week news outlets started reporting that the new owners have plans to build a “dynamic” commercial office building complex targeting new technology businesses that otherwise might seek space in Cambridge’s Kendall Square.

The proposed development would include accessory parking, retail and public space, and possibly residential space.  At its full zoning potential, the development could bring 5,000 to 10,000 jobs to the site.

Bar Mezzana opens in South End on June 1

Italy, Italian, sweet life, bar mezzanaLast fall I wrote about Bar Mezzana’s opening in the Ink Block’s Sepia Building. At the time the projected spring opening seemed so far off it was hard to imagine, but fast forward 6 months and tomorrow on Wednesday, June 1 Bar Mezzana opens to the public adding another Italian dining option to the n’hood.

Friends and Family nights were well received and the hype is building for the 130 seat (and 40-seat outdoor patio) restaurant that has ties to one of the South End’s favorite chefs, Barbara Lynch. Time will tell where Bar Mezzana sits in the pantheon of great South End restaurants but I wish them luck and look forward to trying the neighborhood’s newest restaurant.

Summer reading: Valentine and Lovelace

felony and mayhem, gay fiction, summer readingMemorial Day Weekend is the official start of summer here in New England and that means each weekend people will be heading en masse to the coast.  If you are like me, you will be looking for some light reading to pass the time as you lounge poolside or at the beach.

Earlier this year I wrote about four gay-themed murder mysteries set in Boston and Provincetown that were initially published in the 1980s. I thought it worth giving this series another shout out for those looking for summer reading suggestions. You need not read the entire series but if you like one you’ll probably like the others. The four book series from Felony & Mayhem publishers includes: Vermillion(1980), Cobalt(1982), Slate (1984), and Canary (1986). They are available for purchase on the publisher’s website or you may download them from Amazon.com and Apple’s iBooks.

Happy Reading
