Boston invests in cultural planning process

LGBT Boston, gay life bostonI’ll be the first to admit that I did not follow nor did I even vote for Mayor in the last election, but Mayor Walsh has really impressed me with his zeal and energy.  As much as I love Mayor Menino, Marty Walsh’s vision for Boston really excites me.  I agree with his call to invest in a long-term cultural planning process for the city of Boston and hiring a chief of arts and culture to help make that happen.

This past Sunday The Boston Globe had an excellent article Sketching an arts-centric future for Boston by Joel Brown, detailing some of the plans and investment the city of Boston is making to elevate and champion a cultural strategy intended to make our city stand out with major cities.  A 15-member steering committee is currently working to help make this happen.  For all you cultcha vultchas out there, this is exciting news.

Mount Gay rum now on Harrison

Mount Gay RumA week or two ago this advertisement for Mount Gay Rum was painted on a rather decrepit single story commercial building in my neighborhood. I kind of dig it and think of it as street art.  What do you think? I wish there were more painted building advertisements like this around Boston.

Take Boston’s taxi advisory survey

Uber BostonThe city of Boston wants to hear about what you think of the city’s taxi service and popular ride sourcing services like Uber and Lyft. Last week Mayor Walsh announced he was creating a “Taxi Advisory Committee” that would comprise a group of  over twenty individuals who would be charged with analyzing, assessing, and adjusting the City of Boston’s current rules, regulations and policies related to transportation-for-hire services.

Tell the Mayor what you think:  Taxi Advisory Committee Survey

The Committee will seek suggestions from the taxi industry, stakeholder groups, and members of the public to develop a new policy on how the City operates with a diverse and innovative for-hire transportation economy.  Click on the link above to take the 2-minute survey and voice your opinions on taxi service in Boston and current ride sourcing alternatives like Uber and Lyft.

BalletBoyz come to the US

BalletBoyzThe current issue of Metrosource has a really interesting article about BalletBoyz, an all male ballet dance company that is touring parts of the United States starting later this month.  Sadly the talented troupe will not be stopping in Boston.

Founded by two classically trained ballet dancers from London’s Royal Ballet School, the company now consists of ten dancers.  Metrosource writer, Matt Gurry, describes the troupe as “committed to their work, while not sexual, flaunts an unabashed, athletic homoeroticism. They are young. They are brave. This new crop indeed struts like Greek Gods. But above all, they are indisputably talented.”

BalletBoyz will be coming to Philadelphia, Madison, Santa Barbara, Palm Desert, Portland and Los Angeles.  For more information about the BalletBoyz and to purchase tickets, visit the website.

Here is a promo video from their 2013 tour.

Restaurant gossip

gossipMore restaurant gossip continues to be passed my way but unlike most whispers this is about two well known places outside of the South End.  My contacts and connections outside the South End aren’t as strong but the source has proven to be quite reliable in the past so I thought I would pass it along to all you foodies.

Rumors are circling that Via Matta & TICO may close.

One of Boston’s favorite chefs is Michael Schlow.  He may be best known for his former restaurant, Radius, which closed last year, but I’ve recently been told two of his restaurants in the Back Bay, Via Matta and TICO, may soon meet a similar fate. I don’t know Michael nor do I have any connections to verify these rumors. However, if true these establishments would be Michael’s second and third restaurant closings in 2014; following the closure of Barrio Cantina earlier this year in the Fenway.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

realm health and fitness tips from kyleOne of the most overlooked and intimidating avenues of fitness is boxing. People are often hesitant to partake due to the fear of looking silly and the guarantee that they will not be very skilled upon starting. Boxing specifically is a skill based sport so it takes time and repetitions to be comfortable with the gloves, but once the proper mechanics are learned it becomes a high intensity full body workout that is sure to improve your endurance while burning fat. Get off the treadmill and check out one of Boston’s many boxing gyms and clubs where you can learn the fundamentals and get into shape.

The Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend

Head of Charles RegattaThe Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) is a Boston area tradition that dates back to 1965 and has evolved into a massive two-day rowing competition that draws more than 11,000 athletes and 400,000 spectators.  The 2014 HOCR takes place this Saturday and if you’ve not been before or if you don’t already have plans, I’d suggest checking it out.

Head of Charles Regatta – October 18-19

The organizers have created a great website that includes more information about the races, maps and FAQs. You can learn more by visiting the official HOCR website, www.hocr.org.
