BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaser, rodinEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.

If you are stumped, feel free to get help or share it with a friend or colleague to see if you can figure it out together.

I’ll confirm answers later in the day so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance.

This week’s riddle:

Forward I’m heavy, but backwards I’m not. What am I?

Those rarest of relationships: Gay / Straight male best friends

male gay straight relationshipsThe Modern Gay posted a great article earlier this month entitled, The One Guy That Every Gay Man Needs In His Life. The article about male gay / straight relationships talks about how important and special a straight male best friend can be for a gay man.

The fact that many gay millennials’ response is likely, I have several close friends who are straight, shows how much progress has been made and also points to a significant divide in gay culture based on age.  Many guys my age (and older) felt they had to move away to come out and essentially started a new “gay” life; one devoid of any meaningful heterosexual male companionship.

I’m lucky because my life experience has been different. My younger brother and a collection of friends from childhood remain some of my closest friends. JVS says it perfectly when he writes:

“A straight best friend doesn’t see sexuality as a defining aspect of your friendship. You are not his “gay best friend” and he is not your “straight best friend”. While some straight girls excitingly seek a gay best friend as some sort of novelty accessory… You share similar values and similar tastes in music, sports, humor…”

Are you lucky enough to have a straight male buddy who knows you and has your back?  My guess is most guys in their 20s or younger would say ‘yes’ where as those in their 30s, 40s and older might struggle to think of someone they’ve talked to recently – let alone would confide in and consider a best friend.

Provincetown Carnival through the years

Here is a glimpse of some recent Provincetown Carnival parades.

This year’s parade will not have made it to the West End by the time this post goes live but I’ll do my best to post photos of all the onlookers who get dressed up on my Twittah and Instagram account.

Provincetown CarnivalAre you in Provincetown? Say hello if you see me. I’ll be doing my best with the help of Sergio to snap photographs of some of our favorite costumes from this year’s parade and the parties that follow.

If you have a costume you are proud of be sure to send me a photograph at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Although this photo is from the no pants subway ride in Boston a couple years ago, this will have to suffice until we return from Provincetown.  Have a great day and hope to see you in Ptown.

Food trucks come to South End’s Franklin Square

Boston announces 15 new food truck locationsBoston StrEATS rolled into the South End’s Franklin Square last Thursday as part of a weekly evening food truck program that is designed to bring people out to Boston parks.

Boston StrEATS each Thursday 5-9 p.m. at Franklin Sq.

The free event will feature eight food trucks and live music from 5 – 9 p.m. and will hopefully bring more people over to Franklin Square; often overlooked by South End residents in favor of the neighboring Blackstone Square on Washington Street.

Boston StrEATS plans to bring different food trucks each Thursday through the fall for as long as the weather permits.

Jordan Lofts at 477-481 Harrison Avenue

Jordan Lofts Building South EndMy previous blog post about Jordan Lofts on Harrison Avenue in the South End got a lot of attention so I asked a friend to introduce me to the developer, John Holland, from Holland Development, LLC.

John Holland told me that Jordan Lofts would be a mix of condominiums and rentals; condos on fourth and fifth floors and rentals on first, second and third floors.

Don’t be deceived by the use of “lofts” since there are varying floor plans. The commercial space is approximately 4,700 square feet and they are working with a local daycare provider, but the space is zoned general commercial so it could be an office, retail, restaurant or gallery. My preference would be for retail, restaurant or gallery.

The building is scheduled to open at the end of next summer.  Pricing for the rentals and sales are still being determined – the website will be updated when that information is available.

Cheers to earls kitchen + bar

Cheers to earls kitchen + bar, an upscale, casual restaurant with sixty-five locations in the US and Canada. The will open their first location in the Northeast in Somerville’s Assembly Row on Friday, September 12th.

Today I received this lovely box of goodies from earls (sometimes being a bloggah has perks).  The margarita that was included I put to good use at the end of my day.  I’m not familiar with earls but based on their welcome box I’m already a fan and look forward to their opening next month. earls boston
