Bridj: First of its kind pop up shuttle service
Have you heard of Bridj? Earlier this month The Boston Globe referred to it in their article as a first-of-its-kind “pop-up” bus service. Whatever you call it bridj is scheduled to begin trial runs in May with at least 4 nonstop commuter routes in Brookline, Boston, and Cambridge (see image below). If successful, plans include adding up to 18 routes in the next three months to help commuters get around town.
Bridj trips start at $5 – $8 so they are more expensive than MBTA but the fact that rides come equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi, leather seats and complimentary snacks seems to appeal to the more than 3,200 who have signed up for the service. Matthew George, a 23-year old Middlebury College graduate and founder, says that by harnessing data available he can accurately predict areas of peak demand and adjust his schedules on the fly to meet demand.
If you are intrigued you can learn more on their website, www.bridj.com, and like them on their Facebook page here.
Cambridge businesses extending weekend hours of operation
With the MBTA running later as part of a one-year pilot program some Cambridge businesses have started to petition city officials about staying open later.
Steve Annear has an interesting article in Boston Magazine that talks about how Cambridge’s Licensing Commission quickly approved the Kendall Square Cinema request to be able to start showing movies later. Annear says in his article that starting in May (although when exactly is unclear), Kendall Square Cinema will stay open until 2:30 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. You can read the full article here.
It would be great to see other businesses here in Boston do the same.
Vintage ‘Tube
Do you remember this 2008 video of 29 year old Valentina Hasan, a contestant in the second season of the Bulgarian show “Music Idol”, who gave this memorable performance of Mariah Carey’s song “Without you” in fake English? YouTube calls this video “Ken Lee”.
Have a great Saturday night.
Uber maps Boston
This week Uber released a map of Boston, showing high-traffic areas for their drivers and shedding insight into what the Boston Globe referred to as where Boston’s “young and affluent” live. I’m not sure why they might assume it is only the young who use Uber but the map is interesting nonetheless.
Boston, neighborhoods like the Back Bay, the South End, and an increasingly gentrified South Boston are heavily represented as are campuses and high-traffic areas like Logan Airport and downtown.
Do you use Uber? Are you more partial to other similar services like Hailo or Lyft? These new companies have been a boon to consumers and have completely disrupted the stranglehold that a few taxi companies have maintained through the antiquated medallion system I ranted about back in 2012 here, Boston needs more taxis.

Trophy Room opens in the Chandler Inn
The Trophy Room had a soft opening on Thursday but as word spread the crowds came. When I first arrived at 7:00 pm nearly half the bar was gay but by the time I left close to 9:00 pm (see photo above) it had noticeably tilted to a predominantly gay clientele.
Tonight The Trophy Room will roll out their full menu which includes small shared plates, soups, salads, burgers and flat breads ranging from $7 – $14. The menu has a few main plates that range $16 – $19 and include honey-bourbon steak tips, roasted chicken, cod and shrimp fra diavalo all prepared under the watchful eye of chef Evan Campbell.
The redesigned space seems larger than before thanks to raising the ceilings, a large mirror over the bar to make the space seem wider, and relocating the entrance further up Chandler Street. While I didn’t try anything to eat and can’t comment on the menu, the bar staff is handsome, friendly and fast; that combined with a familiar location and a nice redesign bodes well for the The Trophy Room.
Furry Friday
18 year old men rejoice: Premature ejaculation drug on its way
Last week I read on my news feed that two pharmaceutical drug companies have formed a partnership to bring to the US market a drug to combat premature ejaculation.
If you thought the erectile dysfunction TV advertisements were uncomfortable to watch, just wait for these commercials to make their debut. How terribly awkward and what a boon for SNL. Don’t believe me? Read more here.
Theater Offensive: climACTS! BOLD
Earlier this month I wrote about The Theater Offensive’s fundraiser, climACTS! BOLD. The event now takes place in less than a month at the Wilbur Theater on May 19th, and I wanted to encourage supporters of this great organization to mark the date and consider attending. This year’s special guest is musician and Broadway star, Billy Porter, currently playing the Kinky Boots role of Lola on Broadway.
Tickets to climACTS! BOLD
