SoWa Boston First Friday

SoWa First FridayThe first Friday of each month the SoWa Artist Guild hosts something called “First Fridays” where participating artists in the SoWa Arts District open their studios at 450 Harrison Avenue from 5PM – 9PM.

If you are looking to do something different this weekend check out First Friday. This is a great date option as well as an opportunity to spend a couple hours with friends.  After perusing a few galleries and studios walk over to one of the many great restaurants in SoWa.  If you need any recommendations, feel free to reach out to me by leaving a comment or emailing me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Union Bar and Grille: Caprice cocktail

Union Bar and Grille Caprice CocktailGin lovers are going to be happy with Union Bar & Grille’s new spring cocktail menu.

On a recent visit I had the opportunity to try a delicious gin concoction from Union Bar & Grille’s spring cocktail menu called The Caprice. It is made Brockmans gin.  You’ve probably never heard of this fragrant gin that is flavored with blueberry (you heard that correctly Brockmans is a blueberry gin).  It is new to the market and is not currently available for sale to the public and is only available at a few restaurants in the area.  Union Bar & Grille’s spring cocktail, The Caprice, is made with white lillet, Benedictine Candied Meyer lemon.  Let me know if you try The Caprice and what you think. Brockman’s could be my new favorite gin. I plan on going back to try a Brockman’s gin and tonic. #Addicted

Union Bar & Grille is located at 1357 Washington Street in the South End.

Boston’s very own The Welcoming Committee (TWC) has now expanded into Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. This Friday, TWC, will host their monthly, Guerrilla Queer Bar (GQB) event, where they take over a traditionally straight venue and fill it with members looking to have fun and share a few laughs.

Like The Welcoming Committee’s Facebook Page to be among the first to learn where this Friday’s Guerrilla Queer Bar will take place in Boston, Philly and Washington, D.C.

Diseño moves and Phillipostyle Hair Studio opens

If it has been a while since you strolled down Harrison Avenue, then be prepared to see some changes if you plan on coming over this way for the First Friday, Art Walk or opening of SoWa Open Market – all happening this weekend.

diseno bostonDiseño bos a SoWa retailer that first opened in the spring of 2007 has moved from their digs at 409 Harrison Avenue and reopened at 460B Harrison Avenue, in the Thayer Street courtyard and pedestrian walkway. For those not familiar, Diseño bos is a purveyor of furniture and home decor accessories from Latin and South America. The shop provides a nice compliment to the Asian influences and design pieces found next door at Mohr & McPherson.

Check out the new digs and while there congratulate the owner, Frank Campanale, on recently celebrating seven years with Diseño bos.

PhillipoStyle SalonPhilippoStyle is looking to open this week in space that was previously used as a pop up store last summer by Mitchell Gold Furniture at 485 Harrison Avenue. Owner Phillipo Caporrella is using the large space for his hair salon and spa that will offer maincure, pedicure, massage and have a small space set aside to sell clothes and accessories.

Unique destination shops like Frank’s, Diseño bos, and Philippo’s, PhillipoStyle, make our neighborhood distinctive and a destination. We need to champion these small businesses by visiting them and supporting them so stop by this weekend and say hello.

Top Chef coming to Boston

Top Chef BostonEarlier this week Eater Boston said rumors were swirling that Top Chef might be filming upcoming Season 12 in Boston.  Yesterday those rumors were confirmed.  The cast and crew will film all over the city and at the coast, including sites like Fenway Park and Plimoth Plantation as possible destinations. The season will also involve some Boston personalities who are affiliated with the show. Past Boston-based “Top Chef” contestants include Sweet Cheeks boss Tiffani Faison , who was on the first season of the series, and restaurateur Michael Schlow , who was on “Top Chef Masters” were mentioned in the Boston Globe article.

I’ve never watched the show since cooking competitions stress me out.  I’m more interested in the food than the intrigue or competition, but I think it will be cool to have them showcase Boston by filming here.

Thought of the day

Thought of the dayI’m not sure if it is the best thing but there is a certain amount of relief that comes with this knowledge.

2 Bedroom rental housing wage

2-bed-housing-wage-mapAbove is a map of what households nationwide must earn per hour to lease a 2-BR apartment at the going market rate without spending more than 30% of monthly income on rent. Not surprisingly, Massachusetts exceeds the national average requiring an hourly rate of $24.08. Hawaii is the most expensive at $31.54 and Puerto Rico the most affordable at $10.19.  Keep in mind this is an average. It would be far more interesting to see how this translates to hourly wages needed to live in cities in some of these states; I’m assuming this would spike significantly.

dinnerfest 2014

Nearly 90 local restaurants participated in this year’s dinnerfest. The annual event, which was held this past Sunday to raise money for Victory Programs and the Boston Living Center (BLC), was a success. According to an email sent to attendees on Monday this year’s celebration (marking the 25th anniversary of the BLC) set a new fund raising record.

Congratulations to the hard working staff and volunteers who worked so diligently to make Sunday’s event such a great success.

John Aravosis: Conservatives eating crow

AmericaBlog“It was only a few weeks ago that America was lecturing the gay community about its intolerance for intolerance, for objecting to a bigot (in fact, an anti-gay activist, Brendan Eich) running a major American corporation (in this case, the Mozilla Foundation). Republicans, including gay conservatives, were particularly upset that anyone would judge a man’s job performance, especially the man running a company, by his personal animus towards minorities, many of whom would be his own employees. So long as he didn’t discriminate against his own employees, he was free to be a bigot, they told us. Now, they’re all eating crow. Today, even conservatives are saying (on CNN) that the NBA simply must investigate whether the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team, Donald Sterling, made racist remarks to his girlfriend, who is black and Mexican. Apparently, Donald Sterling made the mistake of buying a basketball team rather than taking over a high-tech company.” – John Aravosis, writing for AmericaBlog.

South End’s latest development: Troy Boston

Troy Boston South EndThe construction at 275 Albany Street between Traveler and Berkeley Street now has a name and will be called Troy Boston.

The two residential towers will have nearly 400 units (it is still unclear if they will be apartments or condos), a garage with 180 spaces and 6,000 square feet of retail space.  It will be interesting to see how this little corner of SoWa in the South End is transformed as the much larger complex “Ink Block” opens across the street from Troy Boston.
