BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaserEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague to see if you can figure it out together.

I’ll confirm answers later in the day so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance.

This week’s brain teaser was sent to me by my friend Omar Thomas. It is a real humdinger so if you don’t figure it out right away take a break and come back to it. Thank you Omar!

October 11 – National coming out day

National Coming Out DayEvery year on National Coming Out Day, we celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or as an ally. On Oct. 11, 2013.  This year – the 25th anniversary – theme is “Coming Out Still Matters.”  I couldn’t agree more with this theme and its timing.  2013 has seen some landmark legislation that may have some wondering does this still matter? But rights that have been hard fought can be quickly taken away.

Just a week ago Pennsylvania Republican Governor suggested that same-sex marriage was as comparable to incest.  However, his comments are hardly isolated in the US as a more radical conservative wing of the Republican Party continues to flex its muscle advocating for such despicable practices as Reparative (otherwise known as “Conversion”) therapy.  Additionally, as the world continues to connect through social media, those living in countries abroad can and hopefully do take heart knowing they are not mentally ill or in need of being ‘fixed’.

Toys for Joys 2013 – December 14th

T4JOne of my favorite holiday traditions in Boston is the annual Toys for Joys party.  The growing popularity of this event appears to have moved the party from the Artist for Humanity building to the larger Black Falcon Cruise Terminal in South Boston. You can stay up to date with all the plans for this year’s party (their 5th anniversary) by liking T4J’s Facebook Page.

Mark your calendars – Saturday, December 14th

Squatty Potty

Squatty PottyBack in March I wrote a post, poking fun at an advertisement I’d seen for the Squatty Potty. Guess what was recently delivered to me by a chuckling smiling UPS delivery man.

Richard Branson

VirginI rarely talk about work, but every once in a while something happens that I want to share.  Later today, I will see and possibly meet Sir Richard Branson – Founder of Virgin Group.  He is a guest speaker at a program I am helping run. At this same event last year, I was able to meet and talk to our 2012 Keynote, President Bill Clinton.

Sometimes my job is pretty cool.

#HHD

HHDI have a very hectic day ahead of me. I arrived in Washington, D.C. yesterday to prepare for an all day program so I may be a bit distracted and slow to respond to people.  However, I wanted to start the day with a bit of humor and to wish you a happy Wednesday.

German Sochi Olympic outfits have rainbow theme

sochi olympicsJMG last week broke the story that Germany’s Athletes will wear the above rainbow-hued uniforms at the Sochi Olympics, but officials insist the design is not intended as a commentary on Russia’s anti-gay laws.  Either way, I love it. I’d love to see more countries follow Germany’s lead.  You can read the full story here in Der Spiegel (it is in English).

Restaurant review: Border Cafe Harvard Square

The Border Cafe is a local restaurant chain that first opened their doors in Harvard Square in 1987.  The Tex-Mex and Cajun menu is very affordable, making it a popular destination for students. The atmosphere is very casual and the portions are quite generous as you can see by my glass of iced tea (below) which is so large you’ll definitely need to head to the bathroom at least once.BosGuy Restaurant ReviewI’ll be the first to admit that New England will never be known for their Tex-Mex or Mexican cuisine so I’ll defer to food snobs to call me out on my lack of experience, but I’ve never had a bad meal here. The service is consistently prompt and the waitstaff is knowledgeable – making helpful suggestions. Our (complimentary) corn chips were served warm, our drinks brought over promptly and the food was damn good. BosGuy Restaurant ReviewOn this visit Sergio and I ordered a Chicken Burrito ($8) and Quesadilla w/ a side of homemade guacamole ($9). Both were served as requested and despite the very large portions, nearly finished. I had the quesadilla and had to pull back the tortilla to able to devour all the tasty melted cheese and veggies.  I also ordered a side of black beans ($1) because they are so good here and ended up waddling out after I ate too much.  While this particular location can be crazy during peak times, it remains a favorite location for quick, easy, cheap eats in Harvard Square and is a place I would recommend for a casual night out.
