Why do people think homosexuality is a choice

SexualityRecently it came to my attention that a very good friend has been struggling to have his family accept the fact that he’s gay. While his family is Roman Catholic, I don’t buy the fact that it is his family’s personal faith – despite the church’s teachings one can see in poll after poll that Roman Catholics support gay marriage by a larger margin than American voters. Tens of millions of devout Catholics have concluded that the church is out of step on this issue.

I’ve concluded (perhaps incorrectly) that his family must view his sexuality as a matter of choice, which really sets my head spinning. I can’t figure out how one comes to such a conclusion. It seems like such an illogical argument. Do heterosexuals struggle with their sexual identity so much so that they think its a choice we all make? If that is the case, I would appreciate the chance to lobby Ben Affleck and George Clooney to reconsider their choice. I can make a persuasive argument to stop choosing to be heterosexual – but I digress.

Really the only choice a gay / lesbian / bisexual person has is will they be honest to themselves and those people in their life. Whatever the outcome of my friend’s on going dialog with his family, I applaud him, and I hope he finds peace.

Monday blues

cat My second cup of coffee has only just started to kick in, but I’m not ready to face the morning just yet.  I’d rather be back in bed snuggled under the covers.

Fenway Health Men’s Event

Fenway Men's EventThe Fenway Health Clinic hosted their annual Men’s Event this weekend in Boston.  The event, which raised more than a half million dollars, draws more than 1,300 gay men and their allies.  This year Marc Solomon was recognized with the Congressman Gerry E. Studds award.

Marc is currently the national campaign director for Freedom to Marry but is best known here in Massachusetts for serving as executive director for Mass Equality.

The sold out evening was a success for The Fenway Health Clinic, which will now focus on the upcoming Women’s Dinner Party next month.  If you missed this year’s Men’s Event but would like to make a donation, link here.

As usual, I’ve created a video based on the photos taken by Sergio.  Apologies in advance but it seems YouTube won’t allow this to be viewed on phones 😦

Humorous take on the USA

US MAPI thought this map was hilarious and think you will too. Not exactly sure I understand why North and South Carolina are “Fashion Bloggers”, but I understand the remaining stereotypes and think the map is funny.

Gay night in East Boston at Ecco Boston

Ecco Boston gay nightAs much as I love Boston, I realize you will never hear someone say “I love Boston’s nightlife”.  My fair city’s nightlife ranks right up there (or should I say down there) with our weather. That doesn’t mean Boston lacks great bars, but it does mean you may have to go and hunt for them on occasion.  Keeping that in mind, I was pleasantly surprised to learn each Sunday night Ecco Restaurant and Martini Bar in East Boston gets a friendly gay crowd who sip martinis and chat with friends and acquaintances.  Who would’ve thunk it? East Boston?

Apparently there is a group on Facebook for anyone living in or near East Boston, that you may want to “like” (I did) to  keep you posted on updates like when the GLBT community in that neighborhood congregate to sip martinis.

Fenway Men’s Event tonight

Mens EventLater tonight I’ll be dusting off my tuxedo as Sergio and I make ready to attend the annual fund raiser for Fenway Health Clinic – The Men’s Event. The Fenway as most refer to it here in Boston is one of the largest most comprehensive clinics focused on GLBT health issues in the country.

I’ve often jokingly referred to this annual event as the “gay prom” but it does serve an important purpose to help The Fenway raise unrestricted dollars to help fund research and programs that are important to our community here in Boston and beyond. I’ve included a video from last year’s party to share a bit of what is in store tonight.

Peek a boo

Peek a Boo pantsI contemplated entitling this post “Rise and Shine” but opted for the more cute “Peek a boo”.  Either way, both seem appropriate. What might you suggest?

Fur and Gold at The Alley tonight

Fur and GoldTonight marks the three year anniversary of Fur & Gold at Boston’s gay bar, The Alley Bar, in Pi Alley near Downtown Crossing. For the past few years, the second Friday of each month has been designated “Fur and Gold” night.  The evening attracts a friendly gay crowd that varies depending on the month, but with the three year anniversary planned for this month, I’m assuming you may want to check it out and stop by for a drink.  More about Fur And Gold hereThe Alley Boston

Flashback Friday

LechmereIf you are of a certain age and grew up in New England, chances are this retailer brings back a lot of fond memories.  Pronounced Leach-mere with a hard “e” on the first syllable; I purchased my first 10-speed bike, stereo and practically everything else at Lechmere.

According to Wikipedia, the chain which started in Cambridge in 1913 finally closed in the late 1990s.

Tough BosGuy

BosGuySergio took a picture of me joking around the other day. I’m normally not a fan of being photographed but the picture made me smile.  At the time I was channeling Wonder Woman meets Leather Daddy.  What do you think?

Furry Friday

Aussiebum FurAs a general rule I am not a fan of a mustache, but there are exceptions and this Aussiebum model in his wet tank top can do absolutely no wrong.  Maybe its the fact that he has monster shoulders and such a handsome profile. I’m shallow.

BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaserEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser: Although I don’t fly, my body is full of feathers. Many find me adorable and people often refer to me when they get dressed up. What am I?

SpeakEasy Stage: Clybourne Park

SpeakEasy Stage BostonFollowing my own advice from my earlier blog post, Boston’s Theater Scene, I went to check out The SpeakEasy Stage production of Clybourne Park, earlier this week.  For those unfamiliar, this show won a Tony for Best Play in 2012.

The two act show which runs just over two hours will fly by (I promise).  The opening act takes place in a sleepy suburban neighborhood just on the outskirts of Chicago in 1959, but tensions erupt when the neighbors learn a “negro” family will be moving there. The racial tones of the conversation are as shocking as they are uncomfortable.  The second act takes place in the same home but fifty years later in 2009 when a young, white couple looking to start a family move into what is now a predominantly African American neighborhood.  The “political correctness” of the era challenge all parties to address their concerns in more diplomatic terms, but for some the challenges are too great.

This play has everything you want: believable acting, riveting dialog and just enough humor – especially in the second act to allow you to run the gamut of emotion. While this may not make for the perfect 1st date, it is definitely a great show to see with friends or perhaps on the 2nd date.  Make plans to grab a drink or bite to eat somewhere nearby to talk about what you just saw. I know Aquitaine appreciated the huge bar tab we racked up talking about the show.

Boston Residents Play Daily Game Of ‘Big City’

Boston MapThe Onion is at it again, tweaking the noses of Bostonians with an hilarious article they published yesterday entitled, Pretty Cute Watching Boston Residents Play Daily Game Of ‘Big City’.

BOSTON—Boston residents once again hustled and bustled their way into the nation’s hearts this week as they continued playing their adorable little game of “Big City,” a live-action role-playing adventure in which Bostonians buzz about their daily routines in a delightful hubbub of excitement as if they lived in a major American metropolis.

My favorite line in the article is this quote, “My favorite part is when those little guys and gals head out to bars on the weekend like they’re experiencing real nightlife! Gets me every time.” OUCH! So true…  If you’d like to read the full article in The Onion, link here.
