BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brain

Each Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

HINT:  You will hear the answer if you speak it out loud.

This week’s brain teaser: What do you call a fruit that is never alone?

Leave your best guess below as a comment, and I’ll approve the answers later. This is a tough one so don’t get discouraged!

Like riddles? Check out past week’s brain teasers.

Mass Bears and Cubs coat drive: Share the warmth

gay bostonOne of my favorite LGBTQ social groups, Mass Bears and Cubs, is hosting their annual coat drive. You may have noticed that despite a healthy economy and low unemployment, there still are a number of people who are struggling. This is a fairly easy way you can help someone who may be down on their luck and in need of a winter coat to help them stay warm.

Both new and used coats can be donated by dropping off your coat(s) at either The Alley Bar in Downtown Crossing or Club Cafe in the South End. You have until next week so don’t delay. Your generosity won’t go unappreciated.

Mass Bears and Cubs Coat Drive ends Saturday, February 15th

Vintage gay

It is the start of Black History month and I wanted to make an ask to all of you who enjoy this weekly post. I have a really hard time finding photos of gay couples of color from times past and would really like to show more photos like the one shared above. If you have any photos of couples of color that would make for a good vintage gay post would you please share them with me?

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Boston Public Library McKim building opened 125 years ago

BPLThe Boston Public Library (BPL) in Copley Square first opened its doors to the public on Sunday, February 3, 1895, and tomorrow marks the 125th anniversary of this iconic building’s opening. While this wasn’t the first home of the library, it is the only home anyone alive today would know.

The BPL is the 3rd largest public library in the United States behind only the U.S. Library of Congress and the New York City Public Library. However, it’s not the amazing amount of research nor its prized collections or priceless artwork  that make this such a beloved institution.

The BPL anchors the west side of Copley Square in the heart of Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. It is where many important cultural and sporting events take place; such as the finish line of the Boston Marathon.

Since 1897, every April (on Patriot’s Day) tens of thousands of runners cross in front of the  Boston Library and every parade of note either lines up alongside or pass by these buildings.

BPL, Todd Van HoosearThe original building (a.k.a. The McKim building) and its gorgeous courtyard that was inspired by Rome’s Palazzo della Cancelleria are sanctuaries I go to often and places I show anyone who visits Boston. Bates Hall (shown below) on the second floor of the McKim Building features 50-foot-high barrel vault ceiling and is a must-see for any architecture enthusiasts. Travel + Leisure agrees with me too – check out their 2016 article about the BPL here.

Next time you’re in the Back Bay, take a few minutes to pay the BPL a visit and appreciate this cultural gem.

Chef Michael Serpa to open new restaurant in South End called Atlantico

select oyster, grand tour, atlantico restaurantThe Boston Restaurant blog is reporting that a new seafood restaurant called Atlantico will open in restaurant space formerly occupied by Southern Proper in the Girard apartment building at 600 Harrison Avenue in the South End.

Michael Serpa is listed on the Boston Licensing Board notice as the manager. You may recognize Serpa who is behind the successful Select Oyster Bar and the new Grand Tour, that opened this month – both in the Back Bay. Previously, Serpa worked at the much loved seafood restaurant, Neptune Oyster Bar in the North End. At this point there are no details but more may emerge following the hearing with the city next Wednesday, February 5, 2020.
