Vintage gay

Thanks to the note below from the photogapher Anton Parish, we know this photo of Robert Mapplethorpe and Marcus Leatherdale was taken at Studio 54 in 1979. At the time Leatherdale worked for Mapplethorpe as his office manager and as a model for Mapplethorpe before going on to be an accomplished photographer in his own right.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? animal humor, funny instagram, gay instagramI can’t tell you much about this Instagram account because there is little shared in the profile. At the time I wrote this post in July, David – the name associated with the account – had just over 400 followers making this account a virtual unknown.

However, the humor and risque nature of the posts which increasingly show off the backside of men in short video form make me think that this will quickly become more popular.  I like the account owner’s humor and think you might too so check it out and let me know what you think.

State patrols on M Street beach are irksome and have little impact

kiki beach bostonDid you see the Boston Globe article, Southie’s line in the sand is at M Street Beach? I regularly go to M Street Beach and the ‘crackdown’ is an accurate description but pointless since its has had (and will continue to have) no impact.

The article says the increased presence of State troopers has come at the request of some Southie residents “who have raised concerns about the number of young people at the beach and the amount of alcohol they consume.” IMHO, this is just code for long time and mostly older residents upset with the changes they see taking place in their neighborhood. This former blue collar bastion of Irish-American families is increasingly a magnet for affluent 20 and 30 somethings. The nostalgic residents conveniently forget that the “good ol’ days” weren’t so great. The beaches in Southie overlooked the dirtiest harbor in the country and the beaches were filled with litter, including used needles and cigarette butts.

Watching the police patrolling M Street, it is hard to tell who is more unhappy; the people on the beach or the police who look uncomfortable wearing their polyester uniforms in the blazing sun. It is worth noting that in the years I’ve gone to M Street beach, I’ve not seen fights or disturbances attributed to drinking so the alarm raised by residents seems more peevish than reality.

So here’s my sincere ask to Mayor Marty Walsh and Governor Charlie Baker, can we please use these public funds more effectively? In lieu of paying for police to patrol our public beaches, acting like resident assistants in a dormitory, can we use those funds more effectively? I’m sure the MBTA could use the money.

Become a reSISTER: Responding to “straight pride”

gay bostonThere has been a lot of media surrounding “Straight Pride” in Boston this August. I shared my thoughts about this in my June post, Straight Pride: Media spectacle only if you allow it

I’m not in favor of giving the organizers of this parade any amount of attention since the parade has less to do with ‘Straight pride’ and more to do with getting free media attention so I was really happy to learn that the Boston Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have come up with a creative and constructive response.

From August 29 to September 1, the Boston Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will hold a series of fun, inclusive activities in the Boston area to provide a safe space for LGBTQ people. The event will kick off that Thursday with the “RE-Sister night at Flatbread Pizza Company” in Somerville. The event begins at 5 p.m.

reSISTER Events this Weekeend
Night of bowling, drinking, and dining @Flat Bread Pizza Co.
AIDS memorial tree blessing
Bar Ministry Presence: Sisters will be visible at local gay bars
Meditation in Back Bay
Sister’s Brunch

The Mass Rainbow Times has a great article about the Sister’s response to this farce of a parade, that you can read here. If you’d like to learn more about any of these events, learn more about the Boston Convent or maybe make a donation to this group so they can continue their important ministries to the Boston gay community visit their website at, thebostonsisters.org.

Kayaking Provincetown harbor

provincetown floating unicorn

While kayaking in Ptown harbor, we met up with this ferocious sea monster.

Each year my friend Ed and I kayak out to Long Point lighthouse then kayak along the interior, curling dunes that protect Provincetown harbor from the open sea until we get to the Red Inn. It really is a great way to see Provinceotwn, mingle with curious seals, bump into others and get some exercise all at once.

Below is my amateur illustration of the route we took after leaving Flyers Boat Rentals. None of the photographs of the pod of seals came out so I opted for a cuter cartoon caricature to show approximately where they were feeding and sunning themselves, but all the other photos were snapped by me.

The weather was picture perfect, and the roughly 3.5 mile trek was made easier because high tide was cresting and there was no headwind. Our first leg had us cutting through the harbor, making a beeline to Long Point lighthouse but as we neared the sandy hook of the tip of the Cape, we noticed a boat full of men in various stages of undress jumping off the boat, swimming and basically just having a good time. I was so clueless and ended up awkwardly kayaking between them. They were good sports about it and since I was all of 5′ from them, I refrained from gawking or taking photos.

provincetownAfter we pulled our kayaks up on the beach we walked around a bit and took the obligatory selfies in front of Long Point lighthouse which was constructed back in the early 1800s.  Neither Ed nor I felt much like sitting still so we put our kayaks back in the water, hugging the coastline and coming to shore so I could snap this photo (see below) which shows how narrow the dunes get: below is a photo of open ocean on the left and Ptown’s sheltered harbor on the right.

After, we aimed our kayaks for the historic Red Inn to enjoy some ‘light refreshments’. En route, we found ourselves surrounded by a pod of about 20 seals. They were both curious and skittish so while it was fun to see them swimming all around us, none of my photos could quite capture the moment.

Part of the reward of all that kayaking, is knowing we will enjoy cold beers and raw bar. After about 2 hours of ‘relaxing’ by the bar, we put our kayaks back in the water one final time to return the rentals. On our way back we stumbled upon these two sea monsters who turned out to be quite friendly and the perfect ending to a great day out in Provincetown.
