Vintage gay

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? This week on Instagram: bunvoyage_drawings

artist, drawingsThis week I’m featuring another Israel-based Instagram account but unlike last week’s ridiculously distracting model, I’m suggesting an account that features the drawings of a very talented artist who focuses on the male form (usually nude). I love his drawings and my only complaint about the account is I wish the artist would post more drawings.

Like last week, this is not a well known IG accoung with only approximately 1,000 followers. I’d encourage you to check out this artist’s work. I featured this particular drawing because I love the look and it actually reminded me o f the account I featured last week.

Follow this account on Instagram here, instagram.com/bunvoyage_drawings/.

Taste of the South End is Tuesday, Mar 19th

TOSE 19, AIDS Action CommitteeAIDS Action Taste of the South End
Tuesday, March 19, 2019 ||  Tickets start at $150.00
Boston Center for the Arts, 6:00 – 9:00 PM

This is easily the best tasting event of the season. Sergio and I started attending this event nearly 20 years ago when I worked at AIDS Action and it is one of my favorite charity events to attend.

For one night in March, AIDS Action brings together 40+ South End restaurants for a delicious evening of bite-sized servings, live cooking demonstrations, silent auction, as well as wine tastings and beer sampling. Admission includes unlimited sampling and complimentary fine wine, beer and more.

Tickets have been on sales since late last year so if you’ve yet to purchase your tickets don’t delay since the event generally sells out before the night of the event. For more information visit tasteofthesouthend.org.

Gen Z and Millennials are reshaping the social fabric of America (and that’s a good thing)

Last month the NYT had an article that caught my eye and made me feel more optimistic about the future. The article, Young Voters Keep Moving to the Left on Social Issues, Republicans Included, points to  how Gen-Z and Millennials are far more racially and ethnically diverse and how those differences are shaping their views the world. For example, according to a survey from Pew Research Center, 64% of Millennials believe government should play a bigger role in their lives as opposed to 49% of Boomers. Both younger generation cohorts also overwhelmingly favor social issues like same sex marriage and agree that there is systemic racism that results in Black Americans being treated unfairly. Let that sink in for a minute.

knoema corporationWhile there is no doubt that many of the views of these young men and women will evolve and change, the demographics of a more multicultural, multiracial society is changing the fabric of our society in ways that are very visible as well as in ways that we have yet to fully realize. Combine that with the knowledge that in 2019 Millennials will outnumber Baby Boomers and it makes elections moving forward far more interesting; assuming Millennials will head to the voting booth.

Biopic: Mapplethorpe to open March 1st

Ondi Timoner, Samuel Goldwyn Films, Matt Smith, Marianne Rendón, John Benjamin Hickey, Mark Moses, Carolyn McCormick, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Kerry ButlerA new film about the life and work of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe opens next month. For those who are unfamiliar with Mapplethorpe, Wikipedia describes his work as “sensitive yet blunt treatment of controversial subject-matter in the large-scale, highly stylized black and white medium of photography.” His most controversial work is that of the BDSM subculture in the late 1960s and early 1970s of New York City. The homoeroticism of this work fuelled a national debate over the public funding of controversial artwork.

The movie, Mapplethorpe, opens March 1 and depicts his life from moments before he and Patti Smith moved into the famed Chelsea hotel, where he begins photographing its inhabitants and his new found circle of friends including artists and musicians, socialites, film stars, and members of the S&M underground. Exploring the intersection of his art, his sexuality and his struggle for mainstream recognition, the film offers a nuanced portrait of an artist at the height of his craft and his self-destructive impulses.

At this point, I don’t have details for where or when this film will show in Boston.
