Just barely enough to qualify but what he lacks on his chest he makes up for with his beard. At least I’m hoping you’ll agree, because I can’t stop looking.

The Jewish Arts Collaborative has engaged American sculptor, Julia Vogl, to create a public piece of temporary art on the Boston Common that will be inspired by dialogue about freedom and immigration in Boston. Her artwork will reflect the 2,000 conversations she will have in the coming weeks, asking people from all backgrounds about their journeys to freedom.
Drawing inspiration from these stories, Vogl will create a larger than life visual representation that will be on display to the public from on display from April 25 to May 2 on the Soldiers and Sailors Monument on Boston Common.
Would you like to be involved in this public art project?
Vogl is inviting the public to meet up with her at scheduled “encounters” around Greater Boston. These encounters started this week and will run through Sunday, April 8. If you decide to participate, you will be asked to answer four multiple-choice questions about freedom and immigration on an iPad and decorate a button that is fashioned after a seder plate.
For more information about this project link here: Pathways to Freedom.
What a cute face this guy makes while he gets a peck on his cheek. I have no idea where or when this may have been taken but wonder if the last two digits “58” on the fender might refer to 1958. Anyone have any thoughts?
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
A new report has published quantitative evidence that fewer gay men are studying STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). This follows similar findings that these areas of study also have fewer women and racial minorities. However when reviewing the evidence for sexual minorities, in an interesting twist, while fewer gay men remain in these fields – women who identify as lesbian are actually more likely to persist in STEM than their heterosexual counterparts.
It is unclear why fewer gay men who initially decide to study science, technology, engineering or math are deciding to change their areas of study or quitting all together, but it is problematic because these areas typically provide good paying jobs and are skills that are highly marketable. The study speculates that difficulty in being accepted by colleagues may contribute to men dropping out but that doesn’t ring true to me. If acceptance was a barrier it wouldn’t make sense to me that lesbians are more likely to continue their studies than their heterosexual counterparts.
If you’d like to read more about the findings from the study you can read Kate Langin’s article, STEM is losing male LGBQ undergrads, and if you would like to see the research firsthand, you can read the abstract for Coming out in STEM: Factors affecting retention of sexual minority STEM students.
Much thanks to my friend Evan who earlier this year turned me on to the whimsical Instagram account, Barbie Pond on Avenue Q (in DC). I will have to make sure I check out this garden decorated with Barbie and Ken dolls in a variety of poses, dress and themes.
It makes me wish we had something equally colorful in our neighborhood. I think a “My Little Pony Stable” would be wonderful. Unfortunately, I live in a mid-rise condo so I’ll have to hope that this post and the Barbie Pond Instagram account might inspire a neighbor to give it a go. #FingersCrossed

There are some really interesting shows from local Boston theater companies that will be opening, and I hope you’ll consider purchasing tickets to at least one of these productions.
Local theater companies have a mix of musicals and plays with several shows centered on strong women like Central Square Theater’s world premiere, The Women Who Mapped The Stars and the 1980s play Top Girls at The Huntington. Several plays have strong gay themes including The Gold Dust Orphans eagerly anticipated Brokelahomo! and Company One’s WIG OUT. And The SpeakEasy Stage combines history and drama when they share the true story about George Takei and his family in, ALLEGIANCE.
Anna Christie, April 6 – May 6 at Lyric Stage Company is a Pulitzer Prize winning classic play by Eugene O’Neill that remains remarkably current and filled with with fierce physicality, humor, and drama.
The Women Who Mapped The Stars, April 19 – May 20 at the Central Square Theater is a world premiere play by Joyce Van Dyke about five women in the late 1800s who were working at Harvard College Observatory and made discoveries that changed the way astronomers saw the universe.
Top Girls, April 20 – May 20 at The Huntington Theater may have been written in the early 1980s but its focus on the role of women in society and what being a successful woman means (and the sacrifices one makes) remains as relevant today as it did when it was first produced 35 years ago.
Brokelahomo!, April 26 – May 27 from The Gold Dust Orphans at The Ramrod Performing Arts Center Ryan Landry and his Gold Dust Orphans treat all of Boston with their raucous musical Western which is guaranteed to leave you laughing your a$$ off. Be sure to check it out before the show closes and heads to Provincetown for the summer.
WIG OUT, April 27 – May 13 from Company One at The Oberon From Oscar-winning writer of Moonlight, Tarell Alvin McCraney’s WIG OUT! is the catwalk showdown of the year. Fueled by a R&B playlist, WIG OUT! is a divine exploration of drag ball culture, chosen family, and the desire to be desired.
Two Jews Walk Into A War, April 28 – May 20 This Vaudeville-inspired play is about the last two Jews in Afghanistan who are on a mission to save Judaism in Kabul by rebuilding their synagogue and keeping the faith alive, but only if they don’t kill each other first.
ALLEGIANCE, May 4 – June 2 at SpeakEasy Stage is inspired by the true childhood experience of George Takei (Mr. Sulu on “Star Trek). It tells the story of the Kimura family, whose lives are upended when they and 120,000 other Japanese-Americans were forced to leave their homes following the events at Pearl Harbor. ALLEGIANCE follows the family as they fight between duty and defiance, custom and change, family bonds and forbidden loves.

Send me information about your upcoming programs and events in my blog’s comment section or message me the details on Facebook.
Last fall I started following a blogger in Brisbane, Australia who writes the blog, Living Gay Brisbane, but lately he’s found himself in the throws of a romance that I’d love to hear more about when he feels comfortable opening up about it. Earlier today I visited his blog and noticed that he had nominated BosGuy.com for an Australian blogging award called the Liebster Award.
The concept behind this award is to help bring exposure to different blogs – something I can really appreciate . The nomination process requires me to answer questions and nominate two bloggers. I will nominate Aussielicious and my husband & i, two well known blogs, and bloggers I respect and read.
My Nominees: Aussielicious & my husband & i blogs
Why did you start your blog? and where do you see it in the future?
I started BosGuy.com to better understand how to blog so I could apply that knowledge in my professional life and at the same time I thought I could capture life events to have something to look back upon. The blog quickly evolved into more than that, and now I use it primarily as a way to promote LGBTQ life here in Boston and in the summer in Provincetown and Ogunquit.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
I echo Living Gay Brisbane’s advice. I would encourage my younger self to have come out earlier. However, growing up at the height of the AIDS epidemic in a small, close-minded community that perceived homosexuality as a perversion impacted me more than I’d care to admit and am proud that I was at least able to come to terms with who I was when I did despite my surroundings.
Who in your inner circle did you first show your blog to?
Long time readers won’t be surprised that I first showed my blog to my partner, Sergio, who was very supportive of the idea and remains my unofficial PR manager – consistently sharing my posts and telling people about BosGuy.com.
Love, sex or money? Which one would you choose?
I want all of it and don’t think you have to compromise. Love and sex are the opposite sides of the same coin – I can’t imagine having one without the other and fortunately for nearly 20 years, I’ve not had to compromise. With regards to money, my partner and I will never be wealthy as compared to the financial success many of our friends have attained, but we are more than able to pay our bills and that affords us an opportunity to enjoy our time together in a way many cannot. I know how lucky we are and try not to take it for granted.
What is your idea of the perfect first date?
Sorry, I couldn’t resist – it truly was the first thing that came to mind.
What are your non-negotiables when it comes to a boyfriend?
Someone who I can be honest with and who can help me be the best possible version of myself. I also need that person to allow me to be that same source of inspiration for them. Corny, I know but also true in my case.
The first time I realized I was in love?
I realized my feelings for Sergio went deeper than anyone I’d previously met after we had an argument, while we were traveling in Brazil. In previous situations that discord would have resulted in me walking away, but despite my frustration it didn’t even cross my mind. The moment that realization sunk in – it was a game changer.
Celebrity crush?
If Chris Hemsworth or Lenny Kravitz ever wanted to come over and hang out for some Netflix & chill, I think I could clear my calendar to make that happen.
Thank you for the nomination Living Gay Brisbane. Aussielicious & my husband & i feel free to answer the following questions and nominate two bloggers you respect and enjoy should you like to accept my nomination.
