provincetownMark your calendars, because one month from today on Friday, May 15th, the Boston Center for Adult Education (BCAE) will host their annual Sip The Rainbow celebration at their building in Bay Village at 122 Arlington Street.

This year’s theme is Provincetown.  As a result, the party will include tasty treats and craft cocktails from some of Provincetown’s favorite chefs and mixologists. The evening will also showcase the sites of Provincetown as part of an ongoing photography exhibit at BCAE, entitled P-town to Boston: A Photo Exhibit ; the exhibit will run through September 30, 2015.

Jacques to ask Boston Licensing Board to change their liquor license

Gay, Drag, CabaretUniversalHub reported over the weekend that Jacques Cabaret  in Bay Village will go before the Boston Licensing Board today to get permission to change their liquor licence, which currently requires that they serve food.

Yesterday, Jacques had to explain to the same board why the Boston Police caught them on March 2nd not offering food to customers.  FYI – Jacques doesn’t even have a kitchen or food-preparation area, which begs the question, how did they get a liquor license that requires they serve food in the first place?

Jacques has a long, rocky history with neighbors who have complained about noise and loitering outside and nearby the cabaret.  I hope that they can manage to get this licensing issue straightened out quickly.  While I may not visit Jacques it is the only remaining drag bar in Boston, and  I would hate to see them penalized or worse over this issue.

Obama recognizes LGBTQ advocates in Jamaica and then shoots rainbows from his hand

ObamaAs with all two term Presidents here in the US, Barack Obama, continues to be an incredibly divisive figure. Some demonize him while others build him up.  I fall into that second category.  There are many reasons I view Obama fondly but perhaps none have been more influential than his decision to finally “come out” in support of LGBT rights.  Obama took that message of acceptance and equality on the road this past week when he visited Jamaica.  The Advocate has a great article Obama Isn’t Quiet About LGBT Rights, Even in Jamaica Trip

One of my favorite blogs, OMG Blog, was one of many to share the funny photograph from Obama’s visit to Jamaica. I’ve posted the photo above, with the OMG Blog’s headline, Obama recognizes LGBTQ advocates in Jamaica and then shoots rainbows from his hand. Let’s hope Obama’s words will help reshape the dialog in Jamaica. I would some day like to visit that island but it is one of many destinations I will avoid both for personal safety reasons as well as to boycott because of how they treat their LGBTQ community.

Why the “Religious Freedom” discussion is both disingenuous and dangerous

Indiana anti homosexuality billMoral Majority – Family Values – Religious Freedom

What do the above phrases have in common with each other?  They are all catch-phrases employed by Republicans looking to redefine social discourse.  In the 1970s Nixon often referred to the “Moral Majority” to appeal to white, Protestant voters since racially divisive language was no longer acceptable. Two decades later “Family Values” was often cited as a way for Christian Conservatives to deflect criticism for insisting upon the need to legislate their religious beliefs.

Religious FreedomLet’s be clear the reason every conservative is suddenly claiming the Federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) doesn’t go far enough to protect “Religious Freedom” is more of this same bullshit.  Conservatives recognize that just as using racially charged language is no longer acceptable it is no longer acceptable to use homophobic slurs so they’ve modified their language to drum up outrage and portray themselves as victims.

When you hear someone talking about “religious freedom” stop and engage them immediately.  Don’t wave it off or ignore this language, because it is code for discrimination but presented in more palatable messaging. American’s believe in religious freedom just as much as individual liberties and the LGBT community must push back and ask what exactly about serving our community infringes upon their religious freedom?

Religious freedomWe know that silence creates a vacuum and in that vacuum this conservative messaging will thrive. Ask intelligent questions and start a dialog with anyone you hear talking about how their religious freedoms are being infringed. There is a similar parallel to the lack of substance behind the anti-marriage equality argument – but absent your dialog – Americans will come to accept and believe religious rights are being compromised and need to be protected; at the expense of your rights.

Kevin Boggs Born This Way Pride show at DC’s Speakeasy

Last month I included what I can only describe as a funny & touching video of Kevin Boggs who explains how he first met U2 frontman, Bono, in my post, Better Said Than Done by Storyteller John Kevin Boggs

Below I’ve included another video of Kevin Boggs from last year’s Born This Way Pride Show at Washington D.C.’s Speakeasy.  Kevin Boggs recently passed away and although we never met his stories continue to inspire and entertain me. I hope you enjoy this video from Kevin Boggs.

Max Underpants: Photoshop (Guest starring Willam Belli)

I’ve been following Max Emerson’s Underpants Episodes and thought I’d share his fourth installment which he published earlier today.  Max has the entertaining Willam Belli on hand to help him with this episode which addresses how Photoshop might be used in some underwear modeling photo shoots.

Signorile #ItsNotOver

It's Not OverJust days before Indiana Governor, Mike Pence, signed the state’s bogus “religious freedom” law and made IN a poster child of intolerance, I received an advance copy of Michelangelo Signorile’s latest book, It’s Not Over.

Talk about timing…

Signorile postulates that the incredible progress seen with regards to LGBT rights and in particular marriage equality in recent years has fanned the flames of homophobia in America and stiffened the resolve of conservatives who are determined to win this cultural war.  He also turns a critical eye to supposed “allies” of the LGBT community in Washington, the media and Hollywood  who too often remain complacent and in the words of the book “become a roadblock to progress.” I’ve yet to read the book and have based my summary on reviews as well as the inside book cover’s description and will write about it again after the book is available for sale.

Michelangelo SignorileThe timing of this book could not be more appropriate as other states emboldened by Indiana now contemplate similar “religious freedom” laws and an increasingly conservative wing of the Republican Party begins to flex its muscle as the Presidential Primary season for 2016 begins.

The 259 page book (77 of which are notes added to the end of the book) is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and will be available for sale on April 7th.  If you plan on purchasing this book consider supporting your local LGBT bookstore.  In Boston you can order a copy at Calamus Bookstore.
