How Rick Welts influenced the NBA to move the 2017 All Star Game from Charlotte

Charlotte NBA All-Star Game, NC anti LGBT, Basketball, NoH8, Adam BouskaThe antidote to homophobia is to speak up when you see something and for those of us who identify as LGBTQ to come out of the closet. The importance of living openly was driven home (again) in USA Today’s article, How Warriors president Rick Welts influenced the NBA’s All-Star Game move

Below is an excerpt from the article.

Golden State Warriors president and chief operating officer Rick Welts, 63, who is openly gay, explained his meaningful and lifelong affiliation with the NBA and told league owners he didn’t feel comfortable attending the All-Star Game in Charlotte if the law remained as is.

His words weren’t emotional, and they weren’t delivered as a threat. But Welts, who was instrumental in shaping All-Star weekend into the big-time event it is today, didn’t plan on attending if the North Carolina law wasn’t repealed or changed.

Following the meeting, a few owners talked, and a prevailing message emerged: If Rick Welts doesn’t feel comfortable coming to the All-Star Game, the decision to relocate just got easier.

Who can say how the NBA may have reacted if Rick Welts didn’t share his thoughts or if he had remained in the closet, choosing to live his life privately and away from the scrutiny and scorn often shown openly gay men in sports? Welts decision to live as an openly gay man provided the NBA owners with a perspective that (to paraphrase some of the NBA team owners) made “the decision to relocate the All Star game easier“. Thank you Rick for speaking up and sharing your perspective and thank you NBA for hearing him.

Dick of the day: Bill O’Reilly

Bill O'ReillyI couldn’t make this crap up if I tried. Responding to Michelle Obama’s inspiring speech from the previous night Bill O’Reilly felt the need to point out that the slaves referenced in Michelle Obama’s speech were “well fed and had decent lodgings.” Pardon my language but are you fucking kidding me? Does he mean to infer that these slaves should have been happy about their bondage? Does he mean that we shouldn’t be proud of the progress our country has made with regards to civil rights? What does he mean? Below I’ve included an excerpt of Michelle Obama’s speech which O’Reilly felt the need to critique.

“That is the story of this country, the story that has brought me [Michelle Obama] to this stage tonight, the story of generations of people who felt the lash of bondage, the shame of servitude, the sting of segregation, but who kept on striving and hoping and doing what needs to be done. But today I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves, and I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent black young women playing with their dogs on the white house lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters, now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.” – Michelle Obama

Bill O’Reilly’s ugly commentary reminds me of what Michelle Obama said she and Barack tell their daughters when people take the low road in politics:

Michelle Obama

Which picture looks like a America to you

diversity

Photos of Rep. & Dem. Party interns in D.C. illustrate a divide that is difficult to overlook

Earlier this month House Speaker Ryan snapped a photo of Republican interns in Washington, D.C. and a few days later the photo on the right of Democrat interns was shared. All the interns deserve a lot of credit and respect for getting involved in our political process, which is more than most Americans can say.

However, the Republican party needs to deal with their lack of diversity if they want to have a future as a national party.  The US Census Bureau estimates the minority population will  to rise to 56% of the total population by 2060, compared with 38% in 2014, but declining birth rates with white Americans could make this a reality even more quickly.

Which photo best exemplifies America as the world’s Melting Pot?

I understand that economics is a big motivator for people who vote Republican (at least around New England). What I can’t understand is why one would ever tolerate a party that has through their rhetoric and policies made their party an island closed to anyone who doesn’t look or talk like them. Ryan’s photo is a tangible example that the lip service the Republican Party pays to diversity and empowering minorities is a problem. For everyone’s sake I hope the Republican Party will evolve on this issue. The US needs more political options not fewer, but if they can’t get their act together I predict the Republican Party shall go the way of the dodo bird; and if they can’t moderate themselves I say good riddance.

Elizabeth Warren and Stephen Colbert discuss Trump’s RNC speech tonight on the Late Show

Stephen Colbert, Elizabeth Warren, CBSSet your DVRs and enjoy the show. I guarantee this will be far more interesting than anything you will see on those 24-hour news networks tonight.

The RNC is like Christmas in July

The RNC is like christmas in july Stephen ColbertEarlier this week Stephen Colbert opened his show with this Broadway-inspired number, “The Republican National Convention is Like Christmas in July.”

It injects a lot of humor in a little more than 3 minutes and sums up how I feel so I thought I’d share it with you in case you missed it.

Obama greeted with cheers by Canadian Parliament

I know that not everyone feels this way, but I wholeheartedly agree with the Canadian Parliament who cheered President Obama with a standing ovation while chanting “Four more years!” I would gladly vote for Obama again.

This video must make everyone at FOX News physically ill to see Obama so loved. It certainly doesn’t gel with their view that we’ve lost influence among our friends and allies. You can see Obama’s full address on Joe My God.

Why do we put stupid people on TV?

A reader shared that Rep. Bachmann never said the quote attributed to her above which on the one hand makes me feel much better and on the other makes me think – she strikes me as such an idiot that the quote seemed believable.

I try to keep my political ramblings to a minimum on this blog but this quote, if true, really bothers me. I may not like the Republican Party but there are a lot of intelligent people who I can have intelligent discourse with over policy and social issues who are Republicans, but they seem to be fewer and fewer each year.

Starting in the 2000 Republican Primary Presidential campaign, it seems like there was a move by some candidates to depict themselves as your average Joe. Since then, it seems like the Republican Party has increasingly embrace candidates who sound stupid. Why is there such an aversion to education and sounding intelligent? I can appreciate nobody likes a snob but the village idiot isn’t exactly a role model and that seems to be far more common these days.

Equality For All Americans

Equality for All Americans NowMy good friend wrote a call to action blog post earlier this week in reaction to the violence in Orlando last weekend and I wanted to share it.

Read and share: You Think You Know.

You Think You KnowFACT: One of the survivors of the Orlando shooting could be fired from their job or kicked out of their apartment simply for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Throughout most of Florida, it is legal to fire someone or deny them access to housing or public accommodations because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT).

Tears of shame for the shameless

gun controlI disagree with the modern interpretation of the United States’ second amendment, and I’m painfully aware of how out of step I am with the majority of Americans  on this issue.  As much as the tragedy in Orlando breaks my heart (and it really does), something changed in how I view my country after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre so while this tragedy infuriates me and I agree with the Daily News cover – I have come to expect so little from my country and even less from my politicians that all I have left are tears of shame.

PSA: A bathroom break at Kinky Boots

Kinky Boots Bathroom BreakI know that for many of you this video has been showing up on your news feed on Facebook, but I love this cheeky P.S.A. “A Bathroom Break” from Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein with the cast of Kinky Boots.

Here’s to hoping that we can put this foolish discussion behind us. I like to point out there have been more Republican politicians arrested for predatory behavior in bathrooms than the entire transgender community. So to paraphrase one of my favorite lines from Joan Rivers “Oh, Grow Up”.

MA State Senate approves transgender rights bill

Public Accommodations Bill in MA, Transgender Rights, LGBT rightsStanding in stark contrast to North Carolina (boo, hiss) Massachusetts State Senate on Thursday approved a bill that would ban discrimination against transgender people in public accommodations. You may recall this was the source of much discontent at last month’s Boston Spirit Magazine, LGBT Executive Networking Night when keynote speaker, Gov. Charlie Baker, was booed off the stage because he wouldn’t come out in support of the bill.

The legislation expands a 2011 state law that previously banned discrimination against transgender people in the workplace and housing. The legislation now heads to the MA House where it is expected to pass and will put MA in good company, joining 17 other states and D.C. that have already banned discrimination against transgender people in public accommodations.

Hat tip to David over at WGB where I first read about this.

NC anti LGBT law could make the state lose hundreds of millions in Federal funding

North Carolina anti LGBT lawLate yesterday the US Department of Justice (DOJ) warned North Carolina that significant aspects of the anti-LGBT legislation, officially known as House Bill 2 (HB2) violate federal civil rights law. Non-compliance with federal law could lead to North Carolina losing hundreds of millions of dollars of federal funding.

This follows the 4th Circuit’s decision that denying restroom access to trans students is sex discrimination under Title IX of the Civil Rights Act.

It is the thought that counts

Donald Trump toilet paperMy brother hit it out of the park this weekend when he sent me “Donald Trump’s Words of Wisdom” printed on cheap toilet paper (and made in China to boot) as a birthday gift. The gift makes me laugh each time I think about it; proving that it isn’t what you buy but the thought that really matters. Well done little brother.

Republican party’s unofficial war on LGBT

Anti LGBT Bills Introduced in the US in 2016 ACLUThe Republican Party is too media savvy to openly admit that they are using LGBT rights as a wedge issue but just because Republicans aren’t saying “we hate the LGBT community”, doesn’t mean it isn’t true. My parents always told me that actions speak louder than words.  And one needn’t have the deductive reasoning skills of Sherlock Holmes to realize that the Republican Party sees targeting the LGBT community as a way to rally their fracturing party.

My parents always told me that actions speak louder than words.

Two weeks ago I wrote, Why the LGBT community still needs pride, after watching several southern states pass discriminatory legislation specifically targeting the LGBT community (many under the guise of  “religious freedom”). At the time I wrote, “It seems like the South has declared war on the LGBT community.” Now I realize I was naive to blame this solely on the South. While the exact number of anti-LGBT legislation introduced in states in 2016 is up for debate, the trend cannot be disputed and it is happening all over the country.

This is troubling for me to watch, and I would imagine horrifyingly frightening for a young man or woman struggling to come to terms with their sexuality or gender. The Wisconsin Gazette recently published a state-by-state overview of anti-LGBT bills. You can check out what is happening in your state, here.

Religious FreedomAnti-LGBT legislation seems to almost always be initiated by Republican state legislators. The chances of those bills becoming laws are increasingly likely if there are Republican majorities in the state house and a Republican governor. Since Massachusetts started recognizing same sex marriages in 2004 the Republican party has used marriage rights as a wedge issue – initially with a great deal of success but in recent elections to a lesser extent.

The 2015 US Supreme Court ruling recognizing our marriage rights coupled with the death of Justice Scalia has rallied conservatives who are using “Religious Freedom” as an excuse to legalize discrimination and to play on unfounded fears that the transgendered community is a bunch of predatory sickos who want to take over public restrooms – when the reality is more Republican politicians have been arrested for sex acts in public restrooms than trans people.
