Suddenly it makes sense

Gay SportsAlthough the 2012 Summer Olympics in London do not start for a few  weeks, I’d highly recommend watching water polo. I have no idea how to play the sport nor do I even pretend to understand the objective but the appeal I’m sure suddenly makes sense.

Stop the hate

For those who think electing politicians or paying respect to religious leaders who continue to marginalize gay men and women is not a big deal, those messages are reaching your children.

Supporting these individuals (even if their views on homosexuality are not your own) still sends a message of tacit agreement to your child. Is it any wonder so many more LGBT children commit suicide?

What messages are we sending our youth?

The Affordable Care Act

US Supreme CourtMy co-worker’s father, an immigrant who came to the US and raised his children in Michigan, sent his daughter an email earlier this week. I’ve never met this man, but I wanted to share his email about the US Supreme Court’s pending decision on the constitutionality of the 2010 health care legislation, The Affordable Care Act.

“It is a deep and damaging flaw of our Constitution, I conclude, that a
Court of 9 aging mortals, never without medical care or the insurance to pay for it in their adult life, sits in closeted – secret for decades –
debate and discussion, on the effort of a duly elected Congress to assure
the health and economics of an entire nation. When that same small group is nakedly political, respect for law risks being undone for an entire generation in the population at large.”

Tremont 647

Andy HusbandsTemperatures in Boston spiked today, with the mercury climbing into the upper 90s (for those outside the United States that translates to 35-36 degrees C).  It is the middle of the week and I’ve already clocked 30+ hours, but I’m determined to enjoy the evening since I barely looked outside my window all day.  I’m going to meet a friend at a neighborhood restaurant / bar called Tremont 647.

When the weather is beautiful and you want to let off some steam or get caught up with a buddy where do you like to go?  Share the names and locations of your favorite places.

Fitness tips from Kris Kranzky

Fitness TipsSince the end of May I’ve been posting fitness tips from my trainer Kris Kranzky from the Boston Sports Club in the South End. These posts serve serve as a reminder for me to take time to work out and maximize my fitness routine and diet.  I hope you find these tips interesting too.

Following up on last week’s tip, A Sensible Diet is Key, Kris encourages us all to be more aware of what we are consuming. If you do not know a licensed nutrition, you can check out this nifty daily caloric expenditure website to determine how many calories you should consume each day.  According to this tool, I burn approximately 2,800 calories a day so if I want to lose weight I need to consume slightly less than this and if I want to build muscle mass I need to consume slightly more.

Kris is quick to caution that those calories should not be saved for foods with little nutritional value and he suggests natural foods like fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.

Sh*t gay guys say…

I believe I posted this video when it first came out in January, but while in NYC last week I was reminded of the video so I thought I’d post it.  If you’re not familiar, it is worth watching.  Phil Mutz is hilarious, and just to clarify, the video opens with him repeatedly saying “Not to act all gay…” then proceeds to act all “gay” for the next 2 minutes.

Natasha Leggero

I was watching Jay Leno’s Tonight Show and couldn’t believe how funny Natasha was.  I also couldn’t believe how much she resembled a young Susana Hoffs (lead singer of the 80s gal band, The Bangles).

Not familiar with Natasha Leggero? Here is a video of her explaining why hip hop music drives her crazy. I kind of agree.

The other side of the rainbow: Most gay zip codes in US

Boston GuyUsing data from the 2010 U.S. Census, Trulia identified neighborhoods with the highest percentage of same-sex households. While nobody disputes that San Francisco and New York City are meccas for the Gay and Lesbian community – especially for the single LGBT community, you may be surprised to see where LGBT couples have a large presence in terms of percentage of the overall population.

For example, 4 of the top 10 zip codes for highest concentration of same-sex female couples are in Massachusetts.  And West Hollywood, while certainly a gay enclave is only the 6th most densely populated.

Homophobic organizations ask companies not to comment on marriage equality

Last month The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), The Family Research Council and One Million Moms (a trinity of hate and hate mongering groups in my opinion) sent a letter to hundreds of businesses in Minnesota requesting they keep out of the debate over a state constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage that will appear on state ballots in November.

The fact that these organizations have changed tactics and now are asking the business community to essentially remain “neutral” by not endorsing Same Sex Marriage speaks volumes and should be a signal of hope that whatever roadblocks remain for the LGBT community, the tide has changed and public opinion (as well as corporate America) no longer want to be associated with these groups.

Lila Shapiro from the Huffington Post has an excellent post regarding this change of tactics and what it means. If you are interested, you can read the full article here.

Summer Fitness goals

BosGuyWork has been busier than usual and my time at the gym has suffered (that’s a nice way of saying I’ve not been going). While huffing and puffing my way through my first workout in more than a week my trainer asked me, “Have you given any thought to what sort of fitness goals you’d like to set for yourself?”  UGH… really? I was just trying to not embarrass myself by gasping and groaning too loudly.

BosGuyHowever after my work out it got me to thinking about setting some goals in terms of activities (e.g. setting a minimum number of workouts per week) as well as fitness goals that can be monitored and <gulp> measured. Are you trying to set some personal fitness goals? Misery does enjoy company – do tell.
