Cafe Madeleine looks to open in South End
Cafe Madeleine, a French patisserie offering coffee, baked goods and sandwiches is looking to open at 517 Columbus Avenue (formerly Amsterdam Cafe which closed in April 2013). The owner has indicated the cafe will have an open kitchen, 6 window seats, 8 patio seats, and will be open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Cafe Madeleine’s owner, Frederic Robert, his sous chef, Hana Quon, and their zoning attorney are appealing to remove a condition limiting take-out that the former Amsterdam Cafe had been subject to. The zoning appeal meeting date has not yet been set, but the owners have asked for the support of the neighborhood association and residents. Stay tuned for more details.
Opus Affair checks out Park in Harvard Square
Opus Affair’s January social takes place tonight at Park in Harvard Square at 59 JFK Street. This month’s Punch Bowl Fund will raise money for one of these three arts charities: Boston Gay Men’s Chorus, Meravelha, and Commonwealth Shakespeare Company.
Opus Affair at Park – Monday, January 27th at 6PM
What is Opus Affair’s Punch Bowl Fund you ask? Think of it as a charitable drinking game where you are invited to contribute $5 (cash) to the fund. In return you recieve a drink ticket for a glass of punch and a ballot to vote for one of three featured arts organizations. At the end of the night, the organization with the most votes will get a donation for the total amount raised that night.
Who is Opus Affair? They are a community of artists and friends who get together each month for cocktails and to chat about the arts scene.
Delux Cafe to reopen in February
Over the weekend it appeared as if the popular South End, cheap eats restaurant, Delux Cafe, had closed. Dig Boston posted this photo of the restaurant on their Twitter account @DigBoston on Saturday. Soon after @deluxcafe sent a Tweet assuring everyone they will reopen in February. The restaurant had been sold to a long time employee so one would expect Delux will remain same as it ever was; perhaps it is just getting a much deserved (and needed) cleaning.
The news of Delux closing did result in a lot of hand wringing initially as residents bemoaned the closing of yet another longstanding popular, cheap eats restaurant. Fortunately, that isn’t the case but it does provide everyone an opportunity to think through why (despite the popularity of such dining establishments) there are so few remaining in the South End. And what – if anything – will the neighborhood do to help encourage more restaurants like this to open in lieu of $20-$30 counterparts (or even worse more banks and real estate offices).
Bringing out the big guns
Javier Fernandez Spanish figure skater
Last week while all of New England was watching the Patriots lose to the Denver Broncos, I was actually watching The ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Budapest. Mock me if you will, but I think I developed a bit of a crush on this 22 year old underdog, figure skater from Madrid who will represent Spain at the Sochi Olympics.
Nevada A.G. claims marriage equality is like bigamy and incest
Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto (D) has backed off of the brief she submitted for the Sevick v. Sandoval case that is challenging Nevada’s ban on same sex marriage. In her brief response, filed last Tuesday, the A.G. suggested that allowing gay couples to being married is tantamount to bigamy and incest.
While I firmly believe all arguments are highly suspect and hypocritical, it seems even more obscene considering Nevada’s reputation for ridiculing the institution of marriage. Perhaps the Nevada A.G. might like to consider Ms. Spear’s mockery of a marriage to Jason Alexander that lasted 50+ hours or the circus-like atmosphere perpetuated by the countless number of “wedding chapels” in Nevada before she postulates about the sanctity of marriage and the values of Nevada residents.

Dear Annie, This is How Indiana’s Gay Marriage Ban Will Affect Me
Peter Monn and Alex Paredes are a couple who live in Indianapolis. I first chatted with them a few years ago on Twitter and check in with them via their blog Raannt.com from time to time.
Last week they wrote a post that I thought I’d share. Click the link below to Raannt.com to get the perspective of a married gay couple living in red state in the Midwest.

Boston chocolate workshop
This past October I wrote about attending the Boston Chocolate School’s chocolate workshop. The winter months can be tough if you don’t like the cold (like me) and finding things to do can sometimes be a challenge so I thought I’d mention this class again. While I think this would be fun year round, certainly spending an afternoon learning about chocolate and making truffles to take home will help you forget that it is cold outside.
Take note that the classes fill in advance so if this is of interest (or may be of interest for someone you know) – make reservations in advance.

Mike Huckabee’s comments about women in America
Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas and current FOX News host, had this to say about Democrats and women yesterday. Rumor has it Huckabee is contemplating another Presidential run. With drivel like this I’m sure many Democrats hope he runs again as well.
“If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are hopeless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing them with their prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it”
What a schmuck. Want to read more about this? Link Here.
