BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

I stumbled upon this week’s riddle by someone who is a Batman fan. According to the person who posted this, it is a famous riddle posed to Batman by his nemesis, the Riddler.

This week’s brain teaser:

I have only one voice, yet it comes from a thousand throats,
My weapon is sharp, yet I guard a sweet coat.
What am I?

3 Travel tips for booking cheap flights

travel, handsome, hunkLast month The Travel Channel posted a quick read on tips to help you book cheap flights, which you can read here. I have included a few of their suggestions and combined them with some of my travel tips. I hope you find these helpful.

1 – Book your flights on Tuesday afternoons between 2PM – 3PM.  Rick Sweeney, CEO and co-founder of Farecompare explains that airfares are filed in the evenings each Monday, which allows competing airlines on Tuesday at 10AM to see what fares are being filed and they are given the option of “matching” competitor airfares. This matching process takes a bit of time and that is how / why shopping on Tuesdays (ideally at 2:30PM) is so economical. For more on this watch this video of Rick Sweeney on Business Insider.

2- Shop for flights incognitoOutsmart the internet by searching for airline tickets in private browsing mode or incognito. Since cookies are used when you’re searching regularly in your browser, airline sites can see you repeatedly searched routes and increase the price it quotes you.

3 – Check out Google Flights. I think this is the best search tool if you are looking to get away but not necessarily married to any specific destination. For example, if you want to go to Western Europe in the Summer or perhaps the Caribbean in the Fall you can select a part of the world and Google Flights will show you airfares for all the airports in that area. You can also refine the search to look by specific airline alliances.

This week on Instagram: maxisms

maxisms, InstagramThis week on Instagram I’m featuring the account of an out, gay male model who many of you may already follow considering he has nearly 800,000 followers already. I first started following Max on YouTube where he regularly posts.

However, Instagram was made for images and models make for excellent accounts to follow if you like handsome men. I love the photo above of him dressed up as the character “Max” from the children’s book, Where the Wild Things Are – one of my all time favorite books.

Follow him on Instagram here, instagram.com/maxisms.

Gay men’s camping group

gay bostonDo you enjoy camping? Did you know there is a local group that regularly plans camping trips around New England for gay men only? This group of nearly 500 members recently created a Facebook page that I would like to encourage you to visit and like: www.facebook.com/GayMenCamping.

Gay Men Camping is a social outdoor adventure group for gay men of all ages including singles, couples and friends who appreciate nature, hiking, backpacking and have a passion for exploring the outdoors. This is a non-sexual social group to make new friends of every age. A get-together for singles to meet other singles, for events to do with your gay male friends and for couples looking for a social getaway.  No worries if you are a camping novice. All are welcome.

gay bostonUpcoming camping trips include:

Friday, August 18th: Harold Parker State Forest 🌳 Andover, MA
Sunday, August 27th: Private Island 🎣 Royalston, MA

Boston median rentals remain flat

It is no secret that Boston is a very expensive city to call home, and more needs to be done to ensure that this city can be a home for anyone – no matter what their career, compensation or bank account looks like. I can’t think of a more dreary, vanilla, boring city than one which is filled only with “luxury condos”.

But I digress. It was recently reported by Zumper that the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Boston is holding steady at $2,200. That makes Boston the nation’s fifth most expensive for renting a one-bedroom. Additionally, the median rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Boston increased only 1.2 percent, to $2,630, making it also the nation’s fifth most expensive for renting a two-bedroom. For the longest time, Boston ranked behind only San Francisco and New York for one and two-bedroom apartments in the Zumper analysis, which tracks rents on vacant or available apartments.

I’d like to see more affordable and mixed income properties being built so Boston can be more attractive to more people. While cheering that median rents are only $2,200 and $2,630 for one and two-bedrooms respectively may seem odd, I’m just pleased to see that as a community we are working to fall lower on this list of skyrocketing rents.
