Southie’s bold redevelopment plans for the Boston Edison power plant

South Boston Edison Power Plant, boston real estateFor those of you who live in Southie, news of Hilco Global and Redgate developers filing to transform 15+ acres of waterfront by the South Boston Edison Power Plant has been long anticipated.

The project site is located at the corner of First and Summer Streets in South Boston, very near East Broadway and Boston’s Innovation and Design Building. Construction of the proposed development would occur over the next 10 to 15 years with the first phase, which could start in 2018, involves the demolition of existing buildings, preservation of turbine halls and construction of new housing along East First Street.

According to recent plans filed with the city, the developers are proposing a 2.1 million-square-foot development that includes seven new buildings (with three of those buildings at least 200 feet high), 1,588 apartments and condos, plus a 150-room hotel, 339,000 square feet of office space, and 68,000 square feet of retail.

The Lyric Stage Co. presents Camelot

bosarts, boston theaterBoston’s Lyric Stage Company closes their season with a fresh new adaptation of the romantic classic musical, Camelot. The well known tragic tale of King Arthur, Guenevere, Lancelot, and the Knights of the Round Table is brought into sharper focus and promises to shine brighter in the intimate setting of the Lyric Stage Company of Boston.

The Lyric Stage Company presents Camelot
May 19 – June 25, 2017 (Wednesday – Sunday)
At The Lyric Stage – 140 Clarendon Street in Back Bay

The show which opens this Friday runs for 2 hours and 15 minutes with one intermission. Shows will run Wednesday through Sunday with tickets starting at $25, which makes this roughly the price of a movie ticket so skip the movie theater for a night and check out what live entertainment is like – I can guarantee you’ll enjoy yourself and you’ll also be helping to support Boston’s growing performing arts community.

13 years ago marriage equality came to Mass.

Gay marriage, same-sex marriage13 years ago today, Massachusetts became the first state in the United States to perform and recognize same-sex marriage. Today, marriage equality is a reality throughout America from the most liberal to the most conservative of states. Think that a small liberal state in New England can’t still change the world for the better – think again.

“Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family…. The decision whether and whom to marry is among life’s momentous acts of self-definition.”
– Massachusetts Chief Justice Margaret Marshall, Excerpt from the Goodridge vs. Dept. of Public Health majority opinion mandating the state of Massachusetts legalize same sex marriage

FCC halts public comments on Net Neutrality

John OliverA few years ago John Oliver used his platform on his show on HBO, Last Week Tonight (which, incidentally you can watch on YouTube here), to encourage millions of Americans to demand that the FCC preserve “net neutrality”.

On last week’s show Oliver used his platform again to explain what net neutrality is and why if you happen to be reading this article – it impacts you whether you realize it or not. With his usual wit and zeal, Oliver asked  people to visit a website called “GoFCCYourself,” that redirected you to a hidden section of the FCC site where you could comment on the net neutrality proceedings.

Once again millions of Americans did just that. In response to the attention and web traffic Oliver’s show brought to the site, FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai had the website leave the cheeky message you see at the top of this post essentially squelching any chance for you to express your opinion. Interesting side note on Chairman Pai who is new to his role, prior to joining the FCC he spent his career working as an executive at Verizon – a firm that stands to gain a lot if the net neutrality rules are torn up. Welcome to Trump’s America.
