Godfrey Hotel Boston to open in DTX this fall

Godfrey Hotel BostonThe Godfrey Hotel is set to open in Boston later this fall after a $23 million renovation of the dilapidated Blake and adjoining Amory Building (built in 1904 / 1908 respectively).  The new hotel at 505 Washington Street is sandwiched between the up and coming DTX neighborhood and the lively Theater District. The building’s ground floor will be home to a George Howell Coffee shop and the adjacent six-story Amory building will house a restaurant that is yet to be named.

Gay travelers will be happy to know that the hotel is steps from theaters, restaurants, and parks.  It is also a quick ride to the the BHC high speed Provincetown fast ferry and close to several gay / gay friendly bars.

The “lifestyle” hotel will be Boston’s newest independent property and will feature 242 guest rooms.  As the fall approaches look for more information about this new hotel property.  You can also visit their website at godfreyhotelboston.com.

Below are some photos of what the rooms will look like.

To PrEP or not to PrEP (that is the question)

Fenway Health ClinicFenway Health has an interesting infographic about HIV prevention efforts with PrEP that I thought I would share with you.  If you would like to learn more about PrEP visit Fenway Health’s What is PrEP? website.

This is not for everyone  but before you make a decision one way or another, educate yourself and talk with your medical provider to find out if PrEP is right for you.

Restaurant review: B&G Oysters

B and G Oysters restaurantIn 2003 Barbara Lynch opened B&G Oysters in what previously had been a casual creperie, which I loved called Le Gamin – referred to by residents as Le Gay Man. While I loved Le Gay Man, it is hard to begrudge Barbara Lynch for opening B&G Oysters.  Its impressive that a dozen years later B&G Oysters remains the best option for seafood in this neighborhood.  Simply put, nobody comes even close and on a recent visit I was reminded all over again how much I like this tiny restaurant with the chic back patio. Upon entering I was greeted by the friendly host, Randy, who talked up the menu when I asked for his favorite selections and then I was well taken care of at the bar by my attentive server, Mark.

B&G Oysters, Barbara LynchB&G Oysters entrees (which are exclusively seafood) range in price from $26 to whatever the market bears for one of the best (and most expensive) lobster rolls in Boston.  Before I start a meal here I always order fresh oysters so on this visit I asked for a half dozen bivalves from both the East and West Coast. I don’t pretend to be an aficionado on oysters so I explained what I wanted and Mark accommodated me perfectly with his selection.  By the time I was done, my beer was half gone and I felt like I could taste the ocean on my lips – what a perfect start for dinner in Boston on a warm summer night.

Barbara Lynch, HalibutI followed the oysters with the East Coast Halibut that is baked in parchment with a saffron broth that includes fennel, cherry tomatoes and green olives with plenty of fresh herbs. The plate was served steaming – I had just watched the chef snip open the parchment after pulling it from the oven – and the presentation was only matched by the aroma. The halibut was cooked to perfection, nicely bathed in the buttery, saffron broth, that I repeatedly dipped with my French bread. If you love Mediterranean cuisine like me, this is heaven on a plate.

B&G Oysters – 550 Tremont Street – South End Boston

In a city obsessed with seafood, Barbara Lynch’s B&G Oysters remains the uncontested best seafood restaurant (and one of only a handful) in the South End.

Heels for Hope – June 10th at Cathedral Station

Heels for Hope

Heels for Hope is possibly the most fun grass-roots program that occurs during Boston Pride.  The fact that it isn’t part of the official Pride programming speaks volumes about Boston Pride.

Proceeds to benefit BAGLY – Boston Alliance of Gay Lesbian Youth

Please join me and many of your friends for a well-heeled evening of fun and laughs starting at 7PM at Cathedral Station.  Check out some of the photos Sergio took from last years Heels for Hope.  Event details here.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

tank top, kyle, fitness, Are you ready for tank top weather?

As the mercury rises, shirt sleeves get shorter and before you know it, everywhere you look you’ll be seeing guys in tank tops.  Tank tops do more than just expose your arms; chest, shoulders and back are all exposed and for those of you cutting the sleeves sometimes abdominal definition (or lack of it) is visible.  Here’s a few strategies to make sure you are primed to live up to the motto “suns out guns out”.

Big movements – Remember that multi-joint movements typically have more benefits than single joint. (ie. Bench press instead if tricep extension.) The bench press or military overhead press will work your shoulders, pecs, AND triceps at the same same time! Pulls like rows or pull ups work the back and biceps. Note: when you are doing a push or pull activity you will always work your arms.

Slow and Steady – as mentioned in previous posts,  the eccentric or the lengthening phase of the muscle contraction is responsible for break down and building of mass. Practice rep variations by moving slowly through reps or practice having reps to get more time under tension.

“Pre-fatigue” – try doing a single joint movement before multi-joint movement; like bicep curls before pull ups. This will help break down assisting muscles (biceps) while depending more on larger muscles (lats and romboids) to get through the multi-joint part of the set. This results in a huge breakdown and overload of the mirror muscle because they are isolated and broken down, then immediately assisting you through a bigger movement. This activity also works triceps and an upper body push or quads etc…

Marijuana dispensaries continue to face hurdles in MA

potThis week’s Boston Courant article by David Rosen,  Another Pot Shop Site Is Facing Opposition, is disheartening (but hardly surprising) to read.  In 2012 MA overwhelmingly voted at the ballot to legalize marijuana for medical purposes, but since that time Beacon Hill and lobbyists working in conjunction with many neighborhood associations have done their best to make sure that not a single dispensary opens in the area.

Massachusetts citizens have overwhelmingly indicated their desire for these dispensaries to open and much to the chagrin of our current Governor who has said he will do anything he can to prevent a dispensary from opening a Suffolk / Boston Herald poll from 2014 indicates that 53% of likely voters favor legalizing marijuana for sale – similar to laws in Colorado and Washington state while only 37% of the electorate indicated they oppose it.

For the record, I would love to invite a dispensary to open here in the South End. I would certainly welcome having this here before another bank, mortgage or real estate office is permitted to open.
