South End open studios this weekend

South End Open StudiosI’ll miss this semi annual South End tradition, but I wanted to write about the fall South End Open Studios that will take place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21 from 11-6pm.

This marks the 28th anniversary of the South End Open Studios.  Over the years this event has grown and now it includes 12 major buildings and the works of more than 200 established and emerging artists who focus on a variety of mediums including multimedia, painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics and more.

If you don’t have plans this weekend, consider coming into the South End to walk through and see some of these working artists in their studios. You can get more information about this free event that is open to the public by linking here.

NFL domestic abuse and the Rice / Goddall scandal

NFL domestic abuseThere have been 84 domestic violence arrests in the NFL since 2000 Source: USA Today

This morning MSNBC co-host, Mika Brzezinski, pointed out that when a private discussion between the former owner of the LA Clippers, Donald Sterling,  and his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, was made public the entire NBA quickly renounced his racist rhetoric.  His own team even played games with their jerseys inside out to protest his words.

Juxtapose that reaction with the recent Ray Rice / Roger Goddall scandal that involves a domestic abuse incident, and I’m left wondering why the NFL (and sports in general) treats domestic abuse like it is less offensive than racism?  I’ve heard a few rants from broadcasters but that is about all. Apparently athletes can’t abide the idea of racist words but violent outbursts directed at their wives or girlfriends don’t warrant the same response. At least that is how it appears to me and I think that is part of the problem; in sports Racism > Domestic Abuse.

Once again work has me traveling this week, but this time it is for meetings in Dallas, Texas and then some fun in Austin, Texas.

I leave on Tuesday for a two day meeting in Dallas and then will fly down to Austin to visit a friend and his family.  I have not been back to Austin for about 3 years so I am looking forward to the visit.

Tonight I Can Write (The Saddest Lines) by Pablo Neruda

Pablo Neruda, poetry, love

The quote comes from Neruda’s poem, Tonight I Can Write (The Saddest Lines), which you may read here.  The poem was published in Neruda’s book, Love: Ten Poems. It was this book and its poems that served as the inspiration behind the 1990s film, Il Postino, a breathtakingly beautiful Italian film.

Lyric Stage Company: Sweeney Todd

Sweeney ToddThe Lyric Stage Company of Boston has opened their 41st season with the musical thriller, Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

The nearly three hour production is an ambitious venture that includes one of the more elaborate stagings and costume designs I’ve seen by the Lyric Stage as well as one of the largest casts with seventeen actors (I counted).

Set in Victorian England, the musical tells the story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a. Sweeney Todd, who secretly returns to London after being exiled to Australia as a criminal on trumped-up charge from a jealous judge. Not long after returning to London he plans his revenge but is thwarted.  His need for revenge or madness (which is how I interpreted it) entirely consumes him.  While the operatic nature of many of the songs made it hard to sometimes understand, I enjoyed the cast and admired their talent. They seemed at their best with their large group numbers but all gave solid performances.

Lyric Stage Co. Producing Artistic Director said this show cannot be extended and will conclude on Saturday, October 11th so get your tickets today.

Furry Friday

Furry Friday Tom Selleck

Growing up I regularly watched Magnum P.I. each Thursday during the 1980s. By today’s standard, Tom Selleck, would not be considered particularly buff, but for me Selleck’s look epitomizes masculinity and is in part the inspiration behind my weekly Furry Friday posts.
