Boston’s next gay bar: The Cathedral Place

Fritz BostonRumor has it that today the owners of The Cathedral Place (a.k.a the “new Fritz”) will be getting keys to the The Red Fez in Boston’s South End at 1222 Washington Street.

Since the naming rights for Fritz reside with different owners, the new space cannot be called Fritz, but I was told most of the staff from that bar which we mustn’t mention will help open The Cathedral Place.  The 300-person capacity, 40 car parking lot, outdoor patio and entertainment license that all come with the space make 1222 Washington Street a very appealing location.  Should the stars align, one can (I’m crossing my fingers as I type this) expect a new gay bar to open deep in Boston’s South End.

Support for marriage equality hits an all-time high

same sex marriageLast week ABC News and The Washington Post released findings from a marriage equality poll. The findings show that support for marriage equality is at an all time high with 59% of those surveyed indicating their support; up from just 32% in 2004 when Massachusetts first legalized same-sex marriage.

Marriage equality poll in AmericaMore interestingly those opposing marriage equality has dropped by 13% in the past two years. The poll also found that 81% of respondents oppose allowing businesses to refuse service to gays and lesbians.  You can see the results of the poll’s 8 question survey here.

TWC’s Newbie Party is tonight in Harvard Square

TWCAre you new to Boston or just in need of meeting some new people?  The Welcoming Committee is hosting their Newbie Party tonight from 6:30 to 9 pm at The Beat Hotel (13 Brattle St., Cambridge) in Harvard Square.  By the way, The Beat Hotel is a bar – not a hotel.  It is The Welcoming Committee not the come and sleep with me committee 🙂

These regularly hosted gatherings give you a chance to learn more about The Welcoming Committee, the activities they organize in and around Boston as well as a chance to socialize and connect with a group of fun and friendly people.  Curious but shy? Shoot me a note in the comments section, and I can tell you more about the group and tonight’s Newbie Party.

Disney to end funding of Boy Scouts of America

boy scouts of America Last week The Walt Disney Company gave notice to the Boy Scouts of America that it will pull all funding to the group starting in 2015 because of their membership policy that bans gay leaders.

Scouts for Equality, which says it works to end discrimination within the BSA, praised Walt Disney World for ending local support for the BSA’s Central Florida Council. Disney now joins Alcoa, AT&T, Lockheed Martin, Caterpillar, Major League Soccer, Merck, Intel and UPS as companies who have ended partnerships with the Scouts because of their policy banning gay leaders.

The Trophy Room

FritzThe Trophy Room (a.k.a. The Old Fritz) has a Facebook page that you may want to check out and like if you’re into that sort of thing.  The owners of The Chandler Inn will be reopening a newly remodeled space that will operate as a bar and restaurant in the near future.  That new space will be called The Trophy Room. Currently their Facebook page alludes to a spring opening and shares artist renderings of the design and decor you can expect to see when they open for business.

Boston Spirit Magazine LGBT networking night

Boston Spirit Magazine LGBT Networking NightBoston Spirit magazine will host their 7th annual LGBT Executive Networking Night on Thursday, April 17, 2014.  Over the years this event has grown so despite the fact that it is more than a month away, I would highly recommend registering before they fill to capacity and cannot accept anymore RSVPs.

The night of networking will take place at the Marriott Boston Copley Place Ballroom from 6-9:00 pm. This year’s keynote speaker is Sudbury, MA native and well respected, comedian Paula Poundstone.
