Boston Pride

Boston PrideBoston’s Pride parade is today along with its much more interesting block party over on Chandler Street. Since the block party is not officially part of Boston Pride, all donations will go to the AIDS Action Committee. Hope to see you there.

Boston block party tomorrow 1:30 – 7:00pm

Boston Gay PrideEach year, following Boston’s Pride Parade, which can only be described as “boring”, the unofficial block party on Chandler Street starts.  One might assume the reason this block party is so awesome has everything to do with the fact that the Boston Pride Committee has nothing to do with it, but whatever the reason if you are in Boston for Pride Weekend check out this party.  This is the best part of Pride week in Boston.

A $15 donation is requested with all proceeds going to The AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. The fun starts at 1:30 and concludes at 7:00pm, providing sufficient time for all to go home, sober up and take a quick disco nap.

Furry Friday

Long time readers of this blog know that I’m a tennis enthusiast and with the 2012 French Open championship games later this weekend, I thought it fitting to have a tennis themed Furry Friday post.

The photos above are of American tennis player, Robby Ginepri. He has not been a top ranked tennis player for several years, but I still like this handsome American.

Hey Mitt, its not what you say, its what you do that counts

It is hard to imagine Mitt Romney today wishing his fellow Bostonians a “Great Pride Weekend” like he did back when he was Governor.  It is even harder to imagine Romney making the bolder statements he shared in an interview with Bay Windows back in the 1990s when he ran an unsuccessful campaign against Senator Ted Kennedy.

However, Mitt Romney, the man who claims he’s not a politician despite having campaigned for nearly two decades has an interesting track record of saying what he needs to get elected; in truth this is not limited to just Mitt but for someone adamant that he’s not a “career politician” he seems quite adroit at this.  As you celebrate Pride, listen to what politicians say but hold them accountable for what they’ve done.

Suddenly it makes sense

handsome tennis playerThe 2012 French Open concludes this weekend so I thought I’d share a photo of Juan Monaco, a handsome Argentine tennis player who lost earlier this week to Rafa Nadal.

Perhaps this image of Juan Monaco will help you suddenly develop an appreciation for the sport of tennis.

Would you still love me if I were gay?

Last week I wrote a post Hey Pops! Would you still love me if I were gay?  I wrote this after seeing this image in my neighborhood.  This poignant “post card” stopped me dead in my tracks, which is exactly what the Boston artists who created this public art was hoping.

Boston artists use their medium to raise awareness

This poster and others similar to it sprouted up in some of Boston’s neighborhoods shortly after President Obama expressed support for same sex marriage.  Technically these posters are considered graffiti, but I hope the city keeps them up as they convey an important reminder and will hopefully spark the conversation the artists are intentionally provoking.

Much thanks to Sol who left a comment in my original post tipping me off about this local campaign. You can read more about this artistic crusade to raise awareness and increase dialog in an article penned by the Boston Globe here.

Pride week in Boston

Scott BrownA couple years ago, shortly after Sen. Scott Brown won the special election to fulfill the remaining two years in the late Ted Kennedy’s Senate seat, Motley (a local Men’s clothing store), came up with a very creative “Happy Pride” message, using the image of Sen. Brown’s 1982 Cosmo centerfold photo.

Let’s see if South End retailers can create the same kind of show stopping  window dressing to wish the LGBT community a happy pride this year.

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post “Men of Twitter” profiles. These are men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following.

It is Pride Week in Boston and the start of “Pride Month” when many LGBT communities come together to celebrate so each week this month I’ll feature Twitter profiles of gay men who are lending their voice and influence to fight for greater equality. Here are two men you may recognize and wish to follow.

Gay RugbyGarethThomas14 – Last week I posted a rather revealing photo of Gareth from the cover of Attitude Magazine’s “Naked” issue, which resulted in a lot of emails indicating people would like to see more of him. Gareth is an out, retired Welsh rugby player and regularly posts pictures of himself. I’m assuming many of you will appreciate following him.

CarlSciortino – Carl was elected to the Massachusetts State House in 2005 after a tough primary where he defeated the Democratic incumbent who was opposed to Same Sex Marriage.  His closely watched  primary showed others that supporting marriage equality would not necessarily count against you in Massachusetts. Carl is easy to chat with and active on Twitter so wish him a Happy Pride this week.

Gay Pride

June is synonymous with Pride for many in the LGBT community.

Although many cities (esp those in the South) now celebrate Pride in the spring and fall, the majority of celebrations in the US still take place in June.

I’ve pulled together a quick list of June Pride celebrations.  Feel free to add dates of other cities in the comments section if your home town is missing. The dates and cities were pulled from the Gay Cities website.

June 2-3:  Detroit, Honolulu, and Kansas City

June 9-10: Boston, Indianapolis, Key West, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC

June 16-17: Baltimore, Columbus, Denver, Nashville, Portland, and Providence

June 23-24: Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, New Orleans, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, and the Twin cities

Furry Friday

Gay BearNot sure what branch of the military this guy is suppose to be from, but it got my attention. Perhaps for those who like lots of fur this isn’t enough chest hair, but I think he looks pretty seductive and couldn’t resist the post. Hope you enjoy it too. Enjoy the weekend.

Hey Pops! Would you still love me if I were gay?

Gay BullyingThis has been plastered on a building wall next to an elementary school in my neighborhood.  It is a pretty powerful message and I’m sure that is why the “post card” was so prominently posted by this school.

I assume this is an attempt to raise awareness, hopefully remind us all about bullying in schools and the need for parents to talk to their children.  I’m wondering if this is a one-off or part of a campaign that is going on in other places.
