If you live in Provincetown or follow one of the many Facebook groups about Provincetown this is old news to you, because yesterday The Provincetown Independent shared that the gay landmark, Crown & Anchor, had gone under agreement; purchased by Jonathan Hawkins, and his partner / boyfriend, Paolo Martini.
The innkeeper, entertainment, and liquor licenses were all transferred from the previous owners Dougal and Murray to Martini and Hawkins at a licensing board meeting this past Tuesday, October 12th. While I don’t know Hawkins or Martini personally, several of my friends do. Hawkins has lived and worked as a producer in Provincetown for several years. His partner, Martini (what an appropriate name for an owner of the Crown & Anchor) is an executive at Cambridge-based, Moderna Inc.
What makes me happiest about this transaction is that it was purchased by a local, gay couple who live in and love this town. The Provincetown Independent correctly points out that in recent years there has been a great deal of corporate consolidation of gay bars, hotels, media etc… It is good to see that Ptown continues to march to the beat of its own drum and has somehow managed to keep this important venue locally (and gay) owned.
I want to thank Dougal and Murray for all the work they’ve done to make the Crown & Anchor such an excellent venue and wish the new owners Martini and Hawkins much luck and success.
Each Friday, I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.
Leave your answer in the comment section. I’ll approve responses later in the day to give people a chance to respond without seeing any spoilers. This week’s riddle is a tough, but don’t be discouraged. The riddle comes from a past episode of NPR’s Sunday Puzzle and was shared by Dan Pitt of Palo Alto, California.
This week’s brain teaser: Take the common abbreviation for a major American city. Insert it inside an airport code for that city. And you’ll name a flower. What flower is it?
Mr. Boston Bear & Cub competition is this weekend at The Alley Bar
Below is a list of what is happening in Boston and Provincetown. Show your love by supporting our gay bars and businesses. If you have an event you want included, email bosguymail@gmail.com.
SUNDAY: Boston Gay Men’s Bookclubmeet from 3-4PM at the Boston Public Garden (will meet in front of the Make Way For Ducklings statue before finding a place to spread out) to talk about this genre bending treat inspired by the Mary Shelley gothic classic.
Sometimes when I post photos from the past, it isn’t clear if the men are a couple or merely friends, but this photo is not in the least ambiguous. I love how the photographer captures the two as the man on the left leans in for a kiss.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
Personal and small group training studio in Boston’s South End
Yesterday, I wrote about the Elite Training Group, the personal traing studio I work out at 2x a week. I also wanted to give ETGs “sister studio” a shout out. Epoc Studios which opened this past summer is owned and operated by Kris Kranzky’s brother Kyle and his girlfriend Tatiana. The two relocated from Southern California to open this space, located just a couple doors down from ETG on Washington Street, across from Peter’s Park.
Epoc Studios specializes in small-group training, delivering customizable, challenging, and effective fitness experience for people of all ages and fitness levels. The sleek interior is definitely deceptive from its exterior. Their custom-designed workouts can include heart-rate monitors with a visual display shown in real-time on screens throughout the gym during class to see how hard you’re working out. Both trainers are very friendly, easy to talk to and a very welcome addition to the neighborhood.

With the days getting shorter and the holiday season approaching, it gets harder to carve out time to workout. One of the lessons I’ve taken from the pandemic is personal health can’t be taken for granted, but it also takes work. That work is easier thanks to expert advise from people like Kyle and Tatiana there every step of the way – all it takes is for you to meet them halfway. If you’re looking for a new gym or need to mix things up check out Epoc.
Hopefully the caption I’ve shared below inspires you to offer up one or two of your own. Leave a funny caption in the comment section, and I’ll approve it for readers to enjoy.
A little more than a year ago, personal trainers Kris Kranzky and Stephen “Stew” Stewart, opened Elite Training Group (ETG), a personal training studio, on Washington Street across from Peter’s Park in the South End of Boston.
Both worked for many years at the Boston Sport Club South End, cultivating a large and loyal number of clients (including yours truly). So when the gym opened early last fall, I signed up for sessions. I had gained what I referred to as the “Covid 19” and with the end of the pandemic nowhere in sight I knew I needed that extra attention you get from a good personal trainer.

Over the past year, I’ve gained more muscle and lost body fat. I’m down about 15 pounds. With the days getting shorter and the holiday season approaching, it gets harder to carve out time to workout. One of the lessons I’ve taken from the pandemic is personal health can’t be taken for granted, but it also takes work. That work is easier thanks to expert advise from people like Kris and Stew helping you. If you’re looking for a new gym or need to mix things up check out ETG.
