Science doesn’t give a f*ck what you believe

Lately, public health and health policy has become politicized. There are several reasons this has happened in my opinion, but I’d rather not dwell on it and focus more on the fact that science – unlike political science – doesn’t give a [insert explative of your choosing here] what you believe.

I cannot believe that I feel compelled to write that no matter how strongly you believe in individual freedoms or conspiracy theories about wearing masks and social distancing, you are not impervious to the coronavirus. But it seems like there is a large segment of our society that has embraced the notion that if you say something often enough (no matter how wildly inaccurate) it must be true. A good example of this is President Trump’s insistance that the virus will go away if we stop testing for coronavirus.

“If we stop testing right now, we’d have very few cases, if any” President Donald Trump (June 15, 2020)

Placing faith in political and religious leaders over the recommendations of scientists and medical professionals will not protect you, your loved ones or your communities. Following health guidelines as outlined by the medical community is both a personal and civic responsibility that supercedes personal preferences and inconveniences. To put it more simply, SCIENCE  >  YOUR BELIEFS.

Saturday morning coffee

handsome man drinking coffee, hairy hunkI couldn’t find a suitably patriotic photo of a guy drinking his coffee so I settled on this incredibly distracting photo, which I think might even make those who only drink tea to suddenly obsess over this cup of coffee.

Vintage gay

This would have been Independence Week in Provincetown – one of the busiest theme weeks for this tiny town. Due to public health concerns related to COVID-19 all theme weeks this year were cancelled, but I still wanted to feature a photo from Ptown. I hope you like this week’s photo of guys hanging out at Herring Cove beach, which dates back to the 1950s.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

This week on Instagram: cookinglight

Although this photo is from early May (Cinco de Mayo) it looks like a perfect meal for this week. If you’re looking to add some food porn to your Instagram feed, this account is a personal favorite because the photos are very tempting, the meals err on the side of healthy and for the most part they seem like meals I can make without needing to hunt for exotic ingredients that are either hard to come by or are very expensive.

Do you like or follow any chefs or cooking accounts on Instagram? If so, do share some of your favorites in the comments section, and much thanks to my sister, Elizabeth, for sharing this account with me.

You can follow this account on Instagram here, and you can check out previously featured IG accounts here.

European Union bans travelers from US, Russia, India, China and Brazil

travelAs expected, The European Union (EU), which represents 14 countries, voted to restrict visitors from countries that have failed to take steps to curtail their rapidly rising caseloads of the coronavirus.  I cannot blame the EU for taking these precautionary measures but it still stings. Everyone is painfully aware of the impact the coronavirus has had here and around the world. Who could forget the New York Times front page in May when they published some of the 100,000 names of Americans who had died from the coronavirus?

Even those who ignore the science and disregard the safety precautions laid out by the CDC admit that the economic toll the virus has had is unprecedented. While most of the impact was initially felt in the Northeast, in recent weeks rising numbers in states like Arizona, Florida and Texas have forced many Republican Governors who were eager to reopen to rethink their policies. It is precisely these rising numbers that led the EU to include the US in its travel ban.

This decision could not have been easy for the EU to make. Like the US, their economy is teetering on the brink of recession. I would imagine the money US business travelers and tourists spend is significant. Barring visitors from the US will likely impact many small businesses and in particular the hospitality and service industries. It is (however) a testament to how serious the EU is when it comes to protecting their people. I hope the actions of the EU serves as a wake-up call for the White House and those in power in Congress who (to date) have preferred to politicize public health and the guidance from our medical leaders rather than show leadership and take public health more seriously.
