Fun day tubing at Gunstock Mountain

Our friend, Tiago, is visiting from Brazil. His one ask was for us to show him snow so we took him to Gunstock Mountain to go snow tubing. It proved to be much more fun than I expected and would be fun to do again. After hitting the slopes, I introduced Sergio and Tiago to the concept of après ski.

Below is a video of our first run; I’m up front losing my mind and convinced I will fly off the tube; Sergio is holding our tubes so we can go down together; and Tiago is taping the run and shouting in Portuguese.

Middle East in Central Square is for sale

The newspaper, Cambridge Day, reported this week that the live music venue and nightclub complex in Central Square has been put up for sale. The Middle East which first opened in the early 1960s has been a haven for local and up and coming musicians for decades. I have seen countless shows over the years at this venue and some of my favorite concerts took place at the Middle East downstairs. In recent years, gay dance nights have popped up providing the LGBTQ community with another venue following the closure of Cambridge’s only full-time gay bar, Paradise, in the fall of 2018.

The Middle East, Sonia’s (some of you may recall for many years it was TT the Bears) and neighboring Zuzu’s are intimate venues that will be missed if the venue sells and new owners decide they can get more money converting the space into something else.  At this point there really isn’t much information other than the asking price for the complex is rumored to be $40M.

You can read the full article here: Middle East nightclub complex listed for sale

Vintage gay

I stumbled upon this photo of two unidentified men in Kentucky photo dating back to the early 1900s. Much thanks to the work done by historian Jonathan Coleman and artist Robert Morgan who compiled more than 12,000 items and 100 hours of recorded interviews for the Faulkner-Morgan Pagan Babies Archive of LGBTQ life in Kentucky. You can read more about the collection here.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

A.R.T. presents Gloria: A Life

While Broadway has seen a number of shows about pop stars in recent years, I’m pleased to see The American Repertory Theater will bring a new play about Gloria Steinem to the stage called Gloria: A Life.

The show (initially proposed by Steinem’s good friend, Kathy Najimy) centers on Gloria and the women she has partnered with in a decades-long fight for equality with a dynamic ensemble of performers. I hope you’ll share this with your friends and encourage younger men and women who may not be familiar with the work Gloria Steinem has done to come to see this show.
