Last month, after spending two weeks visiting Argentina, we hopped on a 90-minute ferry from Buenos Aires, Argentina headed for Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. Situated in the southwest corner of Uruguay, this pristine town is best known for its historic quarter which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Since 1828 Colonia del Sacramento has been a part of Uruguay but it was hotly contested by the monarchs of Spain and Portugal, exchanging hands more than a half dozen times since the 1600s. The city was even briefly a part of Brazil. Colonia del Sacramento makes for a great day trip from Buenos Aires, but if you’re going to spend a night, I’d recommend where we stayed, Hotel Charco, which is situated in the middle of old town with views of the water.
After spending a night we were ready to hop in our rental car to get to our real destination and fun in the sun at Uruguay’s famous Punta del Este. The drive from Colonia to Punta was easy but further than I realized (approximately 3.5 hours). It gave us a glimpse of Uruguay, which seemed to be mostly farm land with an occasional vineyard. Note that the drive from Puna del Este to the capital, Montevideo is much shorter (about 90-minutes).
Punta attracts travelers the world over but it is mostly a summer playground for well-to-do Argentinians and Brazilians. If you’ve seen photos of Punta del Este it was most likely of the giant beach sculpture La Mano or Casapueblo, the onetime home of Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, which is now a museum, restaurant and hotel.

We opted to stay about 20 minutes outside of town in Maldonado, after a friend recommended a gay-owned hotel called Undarius. The owners, Fran and Mario a Spanish / Uruguayan couple are friendly and fantastic hosts. The tiny hotel has beautiful grounds with a pool and jacuzzi and the gay beach is about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. One big surprise was the ocean temperature. I had no idea the South Atlantic could rival the temperatures of Cape Cod. Having said that, it was still sad to leave this little beach haven, but I’d really like to return.
Chau for now Uruguay.

Last week I wrote a post about Boston Lyric Stage latest production, The Cake, and after seeing the show, I wanted to encourage you to get tickets to see it for yourself, but if you need further reason, read The Boston Globe’s review, Humor and humanity are the icing on The Cake.
The Cake uses humor to address a subject that has been grabbing headlines for years. Despite the fact that we’ve all heard more than we probably care about individuals using religion as an excuse to deny service to LGBTQ community, to watch the drama unfold on stage is more compelling than you might think. Thanks to the excellent script and solid cast, it is quite funny to watch as well.
I found it very hard to dislike Della, a traditional Southern baker who has a crisis of conscience when her deceased best friend’s daughter returns to ask her to make her dream wedding cake for her and her fiancé. Della is not unlike many Americans who fail to see the hypocrisy in their selective interpretations of passages from the Bible (specifically Leviticus) that condemn homosexuality, people who eat shellfish, pork, etc… yet only homosexuals are denied service – not those who enjoy a good lobster dinner. Della’s love for Jen (or Jenny as she calls her) compels her to reexamine some of those long held beliefs.
Make plans with a friend or another couple and get tickets before it closes on February 9th. Like me, I’m sure that after you see the show, you’ll never look at a pile of mashed potatoes quite the same way again.

Unsure when or where this photo may have been taken but this dapper couple caught my eye when I was looking for photos and wanted to share with you.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
Say hello to Kyle who hails from Fife Scotland but now calls Edinburgh Scotland home. Kyle is an engineer who obviously spends a lot of time at the gym. Most of this ginger’s photos are selfies and shirtless photos. He also has a number of photos goofing around with his buddies in Scotland and elsewhere.
This is definitely a mancandy account and for those of you who are fans of gingers – this one is a must follow.

Matthew Broderick & Sarah Jessica Parker: Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite
Two-time Tony Award winner, Matthew Broderick, and two-time Emmy Award winner, Sarah Jessica Parker, perform next month in the pre-Broadway engagement at the Emerson Colonial Theater in Boston.
The famous couple have not performed together on stage in more than 20 years but the Neil Simon comedy, Plaza Suite, seems like a great show to bring them together and Boston is lucky enough to get a first glimpse at how their real life chemistry might translate on stage in this hilarious play about love and marriage. Little known fact that was shared in the release says that the Simon play made its world premiere at The Colonial more than fifty years ago in 1968.
