Beautiful Buenos Aires

Last month Sergio and I traveled through parts of Argentina and spent 5 nights in beautiful Buenos Aires at the Park Tower Hotel in the Retiro neighborhood; near Puerto Madero and adjacent to Recoleta. This was our second visit to the city; our first visit to B.A. was back in the early 2000s.

Above you can see some photos of Sergio posing in front of a Pride flag in a public park, Obelisco de Buenos Aires and the Casa Rosada which translates into the Pink House and is where the President of Argentina resides.

There were some things we wanted to revisit like the Recoleta Cemetary  (shown above) where prominent families from B.A. are buried – Eva Peron among them; going back to the Floralis Genérica or the Tulip as I kept referring to it (shown below); and spending more time in the Palermo neighborhood.

Floralis GenéricaTo make the most of the beautiful weather, we made a conscious decision to spend as much time as we could outside walking through our favorite neighborhoods and visiting their many gorgeous parks. It was a special treat for this New Englander to be wearing shorts and a t-shirt in December and made me feel like Sergio and I were chasing summer.

Below are some of photos taken on our visit. I could probably write an entire post on the parks and green spaces throughout Buenos Aires. The city is breathtaking, and I already want to go back again.

Some of our favorite parks included Buenos Aires Ecological Reserve, a massive reserve in the heart of the city; Parque Thays most notable for its Nude Male Torso sculpture by Fernando Botero; Floralis Genérica a.k.a. the tulip sculpture made of steel and aluminum; Buenos Aires Botanical Garden in the Palermo neighborhood and the Japanese Gardens.

graffiti mundoIf you enjoy art and are looking to do something a little different, I’d recommend checking out the guided walking tours of Buenos Aires graffiti art. We signed up for a 3 hour walking tour through different neighborhoods in BA and it was really fascinating. The tour guides tell you about the individual artists, their backgrounds, and their trademark techniques that have helped distinguish them. After we took the tour we were able to spot the work of a few of the artists who had been featured on our tour in other parts of the city. The girl with the blue hair from pum pum shown above was one of my favorites.

If you’re interested in learning more you can check out the tour guides website and the various tours they offer at graffitimundo.com.

While there are many fantastic restaurants in Buenos Aires, Sergio and I did not indulge in any gourmet experiences. However we did return to B.A.’s famous Cafe Tortoni to indulge in an afternoon coffee and dessert.

We also really enjoyed the Four Seasons Buenos Aires lounge, Pony Line. Thanks to a tip from a bartender there we were directed to a subterranean bar about 3 blocks away in a Flower & Wine shop called Floreria Atlantico where you enter the basement bar through a fake refrigerator door (see Sergio in photo above).

Despite being disappointed that we didn’t see everything we had hoped, I know I’ll be back to Buenos Aires. It is an amazing city and one to add to your bucket list if you’ve never visited.

Each Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

This week’s brain teaser:  I am four times as old as my daughter. In 20 years time I shall be twice as old as her. How old are we now?

Leave your best guess below as a comment, and I’ll approve the answers later. This is a tough one so don’t get discouraged!

No Pants Subway Ride Boston is this Sunday

No Pants Subway Ride Boston

Boston’s No Pants Subway Ride is this Sunday

Calling all exhibitionists and pranksters: Boston’s 14th annual No Pants Subway Ride (NPSR) is this Sunday, January 12th from 1-3PM.  Details for participating in the No Pants Subway Ride (and the fun no pants after party) are posted here.

Meet at 1 Pemberton Square (near Gov’t Center) by 1:00 PM. Look for someone with an umbrella (and possibly a cape) who will give you instructions on the specific route you’ll be asked to travel. NOTE: Show up fully clothed – you will be instructed (when / where to remove your pants once on the MBTA). After riding the MBTA a pants optional after party will be at McGreevy’s (911 Boylston Street, Boston). Watch this helpful video for more information and tips.

About the Boston NPSR:
Attendees will ride various T lines wearing all of their normal winter clothes with the minor exception of missing pants. Throughout the ride, participants are encouraged to act as if nothing is out of the ordinary. G-strings, jockstraps, etc… are not allowed – the idea is to be cheeky without showing your cheeks if you understand my meaning.

Vintage gay

gay black menThis is one of many ‘vintage’ photos that can be viewed here.  It is unclear  when or where this may have been taken. Any thoughts? It’s quite rare for me to come across photos of men of color photographed at any time in history but especially when one looks back before the middle of the 20th Century like this photo.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Jon Gómez de la Peña, handsome, hunk hairyWhat can I tell you about Jon other than he is a Spanish photographer (and sometimes model) who calls Barcelona home – oh and in case you’re blind he also has a great body and handsome face.

This is definitely a mancandy account sprinkled with artistic and kooky photos. If his photos on Instagram are an accurate representation of who he is, then I think I’d like to be friends with this guy. He clearly has a great sense of humor.

“Showoff”

Boston’s Lyric Stage Company presents, The Cake

Boston Lyric Stage is a great local theater company located on Clarendon Street on the Back Bay / South End line and later this week they will open with, The Cake, their first production of the calendar year.

Using humor, the play addresses religious-based discrimination and the crisis of conscience some have when it comes to participating or contributing to same sex marriages. The play opens with Della, a traditional Southern baker, who learns she will be cast on her favorite television baking competition just as she is reunited with her deceased best friend’s daughter, Jen.  The sparks fly when Della is forced to question her strongly-held beliefs after Jen asks her to make her dream wedding cake for her and her future wife. Della must re-examine her deeply held beliefs, as questions of morals, judgment and family swirl around them all in this heartfelt and deliciously funny play.

The production opens this week on Friday, January 10 and runs through Sunday, February 9. Sergio and I will be checking it out this weekend and I hope you will see it as well. With tickets starting at $25 and special discounts for seniors and students this is a great option and worth checking out.
