Cher performs at Sydney’s 40th Mardi Gras
This year Cher joined the celebration in Sydney for the 40th Anniversary Mardi Gras celebration. For those of us who couldn’t be in Sydney, I’ve snagged this video from YouTube. Congratulations to everyone who attended Mardi Gras this year. It was the first celebration to take place after their historic vote to bring marriage equality to their LGBTQ citizens. Goodonya!
Boston Ballet presents Parts In Suite
The Boston Ballet returns with their latest production Parts In Suite, later this week; opening night is on Friday, March 9th at the Boston Opera House.
This ballet is a collection of works by three of today’s most prolific choreographers: William Forsythe, Justin Peck, and Jorma Elo. The program opens with Elo’s Bach Cello Suites, followed by In Creases, which marks the Company’s debut in a work by New York City Ballet Resident Choreographer Justin Peck. The program concludes with the second year of a five-year partnership with Forsythe, when the Boston Ballet presents the Company premiere of his Pas/Parts 2016.
Parts In Suite runs March 9–April 7

I love it when the Boston Ballet shares a collection of works by different choreographers. It provides a glimpse at often very different styles. Last year’s Forsythe production really blew my mind so Sergio and I will be very curious to see his ballet, but it was NYC Ballet Resident Choreopgrapher, Justin Peck, who makes his debut here in Boston that caught my attention. Check out his video below where he describes his creative process for choreographing dance.

South End restaurant, Southern Proper opens tonight
Last month EaterBoston shared some beautiful photos of Southern Proper, a new restaurant scheduled to open to the public today, in The Girard Apartment building here in the South End. Southern Proper’s entrance is at 600 Harrison Avenue and will have outdoor seating later this spring.
The 1,500 square foot restaurant is Chef Jason Cheek’s latest venture. When he was asked about the menu by Eater Boston he said, “It’ll be heavily oriented toward chicken and beer”, but he also indicated patrons will be able to order smoked sausages, lamb, and pulled pork as well. Most of the menu is under $20, continuing a trend in dining here in the South End of more affordably priced restaurants opening (let’s hope this trend continues). You can check out the full menu on their website, southernproperboston.com.
Jason Cheek’s name might sound familiar to some of you, because he has a distinguished career working at several excellent Boston restaurants including The Maiden, Sam’s at Louis, Coppa and Toro. Best of luck to Southern Proper.

Vintage gay
I love this photo of (I’m assuming David & Scott) which may have been taken in Sydney, Australia. In case you are wondering, I found this photo from a really cool Tumblr blog called The Vintage Life.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
Rumor has it The Chandler Inn has been sold
I was recently approached by a reader of this blog who let me know that the Chandler Inn, a 50+ room, boutique hotel in the South End, has been sold. I did a little nosing around and it appears the friend of this blog was correct. From what I’ve learned, last week the staff was made aware of the sale which is either pending or just happened.
The Chandler Inn has some significance to Boston’s gay community because many LGBTQ travelers stay there, the ground level bar and restaurant, Trophy Room, is one of a very few gay bars that remain in Boston and each year after the Pride parade finishes a large outdoor block party virtually surrounds the hotel.
Details of the sale are a bit sketchy but it sounds like it was purchased by Pineapple Hospitality Company, a Seattle-based boutique hotel chain with properties on the west coast and in Chicago. At this time it doesn’t appear as if any changes are imminent. If anyone has any details to share about the sale, feel free to reach out to me directly.
