Boston ranked best U.S. city for digital entrepreneurs

boston-skyline.jpgPardon me while I use this post to brag. Last month Forbes Magazine published a report by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, which shared their analysis of 25 cities’ competitiveness to identify which American cities are most ready for the digital revolution they expect will transform every industry, from robotics to healthcare in the coming years.

According to their findings the odds on favorite, San Francisco, has become “too cutthroat to inspire success.” Boston was identified as the U.S. city best placed to capitalize on the shift to a digital economy.  A worsening quality of life pushed tech-centered San Francisco Bay Area into second place.

The analysis, “Innovation That Matters 2016,” ranked cities in six categories: talent; capital; industry specialization; culture, such as quality of life and regulation; and ties among entrepreneurs, universities, corporations, governments and others.

Curious to see where your city ranked? You can read the full article in Forbes here or you can read The Chambers report here.

Harold O’Neal home movies from 1940s and 1950s

Harold O’Neal’sMy weekly Vintage Gay post, which I publish each Thursday around 8:15 AM is one of my more popular reoccurring posts. I dedicate those posts to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to themselves and loving who they wanted wasn’t always an option and came at a great price.

Blogger Oscar Raymundo has a new post on his blog Confessions of a Boy Toy that you will enjoy reading if you like my weekly Vintage Gay post, Vintage Home Movies Depict Intimate Gay Moments from Our Past LivesThese home movies from Harold O’Neal depict scenes from the 1940s and 1950s, which you can watch from Raymundo’s blog by clicking on the link shared.

Scruffy Sunday

Tattoos, man in bedThis is bit more contrived than most of my photos for this series, but like Samantha Fox sang in the 1980s, “I need it, want it – got to flaunt it“.

PSA: A bathroom break at Kinky Boots

Kinky Boots Bathroom BreakI know that for many of you this video has been showing up on your news feed on Facebook, but I love this cheeky P.S.A. “A Bathroom Break” from Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein with the cast of Kinky Boots.

Here’s to hoping that we can put this foolish discussion behind us. I like to point out there have been more Republican politicians arrested for predatory behavior in bathrooms than the entire transgender community. So to paraphrase one of my favorite lines from Joan Rivers “Oh, Grow Up”.

The amount of development taking place in Boston is impressive but Curbed Boston helped put the crazy development we see in the Seaport in perspective in their post Five Big Post WWII Changes That Shaped Modern Boston

urban renewal

In the late 1950s Boston’s entire West End neighborhood was razed

The most dramatic and possibly unwelcome change was the city’s wholesale demolition of the West End and the displacement of thousands of residents,  all in the name of urban renewal. This alone offers insight how and why neighborhood groups became so vocal and powerful in Boston. The image on the left shows a crowded neighborhood made up of multifamily brick buildings and the image to the right shows open space which in the years that followed came to be populated by mostly ugly and uninspiring concrete structures.

Boston Back Bay High Spine Architecture

Boston’s “High Spine” in the Back Bay

Other developments of note included the High Spine which started in the 1960s with the building of the Prudential in the Back Bay and continues to be developed today. Also noted was the decline of the Combat Zone (Boston’s Red Light District) sandwiched between Boston’s Theater District, Downtown Crossing and Chinatown, which is now home to some of Boston’s largest high end residences, including the posh Ritz Carlton residences. The article closes referencing both the Big Dig and the flurry of development which continues now as the city’s newest neighborhood, The Seaport, takes shape.
