Developer files plans for Quinzani’s Bakery

Quinzani Bakery South End BostonLast week The Boston Globe wrote that a notice was filed with the city just before the end of the year that the developer who purchased the now-closed Quinzani’s Bakery and Ho Kong Bean Sprout Co. on the corner of Harrison Avenue and East Berkeley Streets will develop a 300,000 square-foot housing and retail project.

There were no other specifics provided but the developer indicated the project would “provide for 18-hour uses and result in an enhanced, pedestrian-friendly public realm”.  The Boston Globe pointed out that by submitting the application on the last day of 2015, Related Beal (the developer) will not be subject to new requirements from the city of Boston for additional affordable housing benefits that went into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.

No doubt more details will be forthcoming in the months that follow. You can read the full article on the Boston Globe, Housing heading for old Quinzani’s site in South End.

Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds opens Feb 12, 2016

Ryan Reynolds DeadpoolDeadpool, which stars the ever so easy on the eyes, Ryan Reynolds, is based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero. It tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Note that the trailer includes a fair amount of swearing so be careful when watching. Having said that, I think I’m going to check this out when it opens in movie theaters in the US on February 12, 2016.

Consumer advocate site for air travel grievances

airline humorThe fact that airline travel can be incredibly unpleasant at times isn’t news to anyone.  Part of the frustrations we experience (in my opinion) is due to the fact that the American public has become increasingly rude and selfish, but another part of that equation is directly related to the fact that airline employees are poorly staffed, managed and compensated. This post is regarding problems that sometimes emerge due to the latter; the fault of the airlines.

Last month the Huffington Post had an interesting article about what the U.S. Government is doing about airline complaints.  The author of the article, Christopher Elliott writes, “For years, the Transportation Department relied on big fines to deter violations of federal law by airlines. Under the current leadership, however, the emphasis seems to be shifting to advocacy for individuals.

What I take away from this article is that you need to be your own advocate if an airline has not honored their commitment or may have violated airline travel rules and the US DOT can be a valuable resource for you.  If you have a legitimate complaint about an airline violating rules / regulations the article encourages you to reach out to the DOT online at transportation.gov/airconsumer or by phone at (202) 366-2220.

Surviving a New England winter: Embrace the winter

how to survive a Boston winterThe axiom, if you can’t beat’em join’em applies here.  If you live in Boston you will inevitably have to make peace with the fact that winter is here to stay. Take advantage of the many activities available to you.  The city has many public ice skating rinks and cross-country / down hill skiing is available outside of Boston.

Get tickets and check out Stowe, Vermont’s Winter Rendez-Vous, January 20-24.  If skiing isn’t your thing, head up to the mountains and skip the slopes. You can still partake in all the apres-ski activities such as hot tubbing and cocktailing.
