The Cayman Islands on my mind

Grand Cayman IslandRegular readers will recall that in the fall I encouraged you to book a trip to a warm destination (if you could) in late January or February to break up the winter.  Maybe it will make you feel good to know that I follow my own advice; two weeks from today, we fly to The Cayman Islands to visit my friend, Steve.

Steve is near and dear to my heart because if it weren’t for my blog, we may have never met.  Back in the day Steve also wrote a blog and that is how we met.  A chance visit to Boston  to see a concert gave us the chance to meet in person and we hit it off.  Steve’s the kind of guy who melts your heart the minute you meet because he is handsome and thoughtful.  Although I’ve known him for a few years, until now I’ve not had a chance to visit him so I’m really looking forward to seeing where he lives, meeting his friends and visiting someplace new.

Have you ever been to the Cayman Islands?  Tell me all about your experiences.

Mayor Walsh supports legislation to extend last call in Boston past 2 a.m.

Guys DrinkingBostInno reported Friday that Mayor Walsh included in his City of Boston State Legislative Agenda for 2015-2016 the bill, SD40, An Act Modernizing the Business Licensing Process.  The bill outlines a number of measures to spur further economic development but perhaps the most important part is the provision that would allow restaurants and bars to remain open past 2 a.m.

The legislation could have a big impact on the city of Boston and not just with extending bar closing hours.    There remain a lot of idiotic city licenses that cost new businesses time and money and do little to help the public good.  Some of those include eliminating the need for pool halls and bowling alleys to get special licenses.  I am happy to read that Mayor Walsh remains committed to this idea of extending business hours and streamlining the licensing process.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Hitting the gymHiring a Personal Trainer

If you have been contemplating hiring a personal trainer to help you stay on track with your personal fitness or to help you get to the next level of fitness you want to make certain you are hiring someone that will be a good fit for you.  Here are a couple things to keep in mind when meeting this person.

  1. Personality When first meeting with your potential trainer, make sure that you genuinely like the person. You will be spending a lot of time with them over the course of your sessions.  Be certain that you can hold a conversation with them and you have good rapport.
  2. Strive to learn A good trainer should have a lot to talk about in the first session. Every movement should be justified and your trainer should have an easy answer to any “why?” if you were to question their exercise choice. Don’t be afraid to ask “WHY” , if the trainer says “because I said so” that is your cue to move on!
  3. Listen to your trainer Be sure to take your trainers advice, mainly because YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT. Get your money’s worth and fully commit see results and make your trainer proud! If you don’t intend on following his/ her advice this may be clue that you are not ready to fully  commit.

More coffee houses opening in South End

south end, troyLast week the Ink Block announced that a new Capital One 360 Bank and Cafe would be opening soon to which I tweeted in response: Capital One 360 Cafe Ink BlockThe fact that Capital One has concluded (ahead of much of their competition) that banks are not exactly loved by everyone so they’ve started including coffee shops is a smart marketing move on their part but it is hard for me to cheer for another bank to open – even if that section of the neighborhood is underserved.

So I’d like to champion the news that a coffee shop, CUPPACOFFEE, (without the added baggage of a bank) will be opening in the Troy at 55 Traveler Street possibly as early as mid March.  CUPPACOFFEE is an Australian coffee house which means they will also sell Aussie foods like meat pies, lamingtons, anzac cookies and other treats.

Museum of Fine Arts Boston is free on MLK Day

Museum of Fine Arts BostonAre you lucky enough to have the day off in observance of the MLK holiday? If so, you may want to consider heading over to the MFA Boston which is open and free to the public on Monday, January 19, 2015.  Special events and tours will be available to all who visit the museum between 10 – 4:45pm so take advantage of this opportunity.  The colder, winter months are the perfect time to check out and support these local institutions.  You just might be surprised by how much you enjoy yourself if you’ve not visited the MFA recently.

More about the MFA Boston events on MLK Day Open House, here.

Boston discusses regulating Airbnb

airbnb boston, jerome smithEarlier this year the city of Boston announced limited regulations for car sharing services like Uber and Lyft that operate in and around the city.  According to an article in the Boston Herald the city is now setting its sights on Airbnb, scheduling a public hearing on January 26th to help determine what, if any, regulations are needed for the booming short-term rental service.

With news of the US Olympic Committee’s selection of Boston as the US host city for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, short-term rental services / room sharing services like Airbnb will play a crucial role.  However, the loss of revenue hotel chains bemoan may play a bigger role since everyone knows money talks and national hotel chains have been highly critical of companies like Airbnb.

Hopefully the discourse on January 26th won’t lead to discord.  It would be good to have some basic regulations in the form of consumer protections like the city announced for car sharing services but the focus would be on the words “basic regulations”.  You can read the full article in the Herald here.

Addicted to Serial

Sarah Koenig, Julie Snyder, Dana Chivvis, Emily Condon, Hae Min Lee, Adnan SyedI’m a sucker for detective stories so when a colleague told me about the podcast series, Serial, I was intrigued.  After listening to the first episode, I knew I was hooked. I’m still listening to Season 1 which was first released in October 2014 and cannot get the story out of my head.

Is this a catastrophic miscarriage of justice – once again highlighting the inequities in America’s judicial system that disproportionately imprisons men of color – or did Adnan Syed commit the heinous crime he was convicted for? I really have no idea and that is the hook that has me obsessing over this series.

Season 1 Episode 1 The Alibi: It’s Baltimore, 1999. Hae Min Lee, a popular high-school senior, disappears after school one day. Six weeks later detectives arrest her classmate and ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, for her murder. He says he’s innocent – though he can’t exactly remember what he was doing on that January afternoon. But someone can. A classmate at Woodlawn High School says she knows where Adnan was. The trouble is, she’s nowhere to be found.

Drinking preference of Americans by state

vinepair

Vinepair has created a map to show the the drinking preferences of Americans by state.  The states are classified into four different colors to show their preference in wine, beer, spirit or other alcohol.

What do you make of your state’s preference? While I do like beer, I have to admit I’m far more likely to have either a glass of wine or dry martini.
