“How you can tell who is left & right handed”

Boston gay sports clubs / teams

At the start of each academic year, tens of thousands of people move to Boston for the first time.  Whether you are new to Boston or just looking for an excuse to be more active and make friends, joining one of the many LGBTQ+ sports teams and clubs can help you do both.

Some sports leagues welcome beginners while others are more competitive (most are the former – not the latter). Additionally, some of these teams / leagues are seasonal so even though this post has gone live in early Fall, not every league is in session at the moment. Look through the list of 2+ dozen sports leagues and see which one is right for you.

If you don’t see relevant or up-to-date information on the league’s / team’s Facebook page, contact me, and I can provide you the name and email of the contact for that group for you to learn more. Alternatively, another great resource is the Facebook group, B.A.G.S. (Boston Alliance of Gay Sports) – check’em out.

Apologies if I have overlooked any area gay clubs or sports leagues.  Feel free to add information for any such group in the comments section of my blog

Temptation Tuesday

Say hello to this handsome, gay Aussie, Ryan Greasley. I’ve followed him on Twitter for a while now but this is the first time I’ve posted a photo of the fitness model. Hope he can distract you from the fact that the 2022 Summer season is now over. I hope you had fun.

2022 Summer recap

Labor Day Weekend officially brings the summer season to a close in New England. The warm weather will continue to bring people to the beaches but the summer-state-of-mind shifts back to reality when I return to the office on Tuesday so I thought I’d recap what has been a wonderful summer.

MAY: Hello Captiva Island
Our first large group vacation since the COVID-19 outbreak took place over Memorial Day Weekend. Our friends David (taking the selfie), Mark (next to him in the green polo) and Rodney (in the back with the I ❤️ Fig Newtons shirt) organized this amazing trip. It was a great start to the summer season.

JUNE: Summah in the City
We spent most of June in Boston and highlights included going to a few Red Sox games at Fenway Park and going to M Street Beach (a.k.a. Kiki Beach) in Southie on the weekends. I love Boston in the summer.

JULY: Ptown & Brazil
We spent the July 4th holiday in Provincetown relaxing at our friend Marco’s beautiful home, and seeing friends, including the proud new owners of the Crown & Anchor, Paolo Martini and Jonathan Hawkins. They’ve done an amazing job since purchasing this inn, restaurant and entertainmnet complex, and I couldn’t be happier for them.

Then it was off to Belo Horizonte, Brazil to celebrate Sergio’s Mom’s 90th birthday at the end of the month. Kudos to Sergio for pulling off an amazing party. Below is a selfie I took to show off Belo Horizonte (Sergio’s hometown).

AUGUST: Back to Provincetown for Carnival
After unpacking from Brazil, we turned around a week or so later to go to Provinctown. We spent Carnival Week enjoying drinks and meals with friends, seeing a few shows, and visiting “Boys Beach”. Below are a few photos from our week at Carnival. BTW, Carnival 2023 theme is Land of Toys so start thinking about your costumes.

I’ll definitely miss the summer of 2022. Much thanks to Mother Nature for giving Boston and much of New England one of the best summers in recent memory.

Brasserie (formerly Gaslight) has closed

Yesterday, the Boston Restaurant Talk blog broke the news that Brasserie in the South End would be closing immediately. The restaurant which was overtaken by the property management company, GTI Properties and managed by Jeff Gates a former partner of The Aquitaine Group, which owned the Gaslight Brasserie du Coin had only been open for business since May 2021.

Minimal effort was put into the new restaurant which struck me more as a knock off of the original restaurant. It is unclear what will become of the space or if GTI Properties will continue to run the space. The same property management company has sunk significant money into updating and remodeling another former Aquitaine Group restaurant space (Cinquecento) just up the street. The initial plan was for that space to open this year as Roma 500. No word on the status of that space either.

Vintage gay

This week’s vintage gay post comes from The Vintage Life blog. I normally post photos of couples or groups but this week’s photo has such an endearing letter I thought I’d share. It reads, Jeff, The ‘hot man’ from Chicago. We have plenty of good times ahead of us this year + next at Exeter plus four years of Princeton. Best of luck in tennis this spring and always. Arch. I’d love to know more about this mystery couple who attended some of the most elite schools in America.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Allston Christmas (a.k.a. move in day in Boston)

September 1

If you live in downtown Boston (especially if you’re in a neighborhood with a lot of students) you know it is the eve of what many here refer to as “Allston Christmas”. Not a single Uhaul van or truck is available in metro Boston as the city braces for tens of thousands of students to officially return.

I don’t know if it is true but years ago I read that one out of every four apartment leases in Boston has a September 1 start date, which creates mass havoc in the days leading up to and on September 1st. Starting today and through tomorrow the streets of many neighborhoods will be full of double-parked cars, vans and trucks as tenants start the arduous task of moving from one apartment to the next.

The result of this is that the city sidewalks become littered with unwanted items. This ‘littering’ of every piece of furniture and furnishing imaginable is what is referred to as an Allston Christmas. Although this city-wide move impacts  nearly all of Boston’s neighbohoods, nowhere is the experience more intense than Allston, although many neighborhoods will likely experience their own form of an Allston Xmas.

In case you think I’m making this up, Urban Dictionary added this term in 2008 here and one only needs to type in the phrase in Google and select images to see what the streets of Boston will look like starting August 31st.
