Boston Spirit Magazine: Networking Night

Spirit Magazine Networking NightI’ve previously written about this event, which an opportunity to socialize and network if you are contemplating a job change or actively looking for work.  For first time participants, I suggest focusing your networking on the actual attendees who represent nearly every industry. While the booths are staffed with people happy to talk about hiring at their firms, it is really the attendees whom you need to introduce yourself, but none of that will be possible if you don’t first register.  The past two years this event has filled to capacity so RSVP.

Register for Boston Spirit Magazine Networking Night – April 17th

Anything for love

When Gerdi McKenna was diagnosed with breast cancer her friends decided they would do a photo shoot and this is what happened.

Thank you for sharing Bobie.

The Trophy Room

Chandler InnWork continues as the owners of the Chandler Inn remodel and rebrand the space previously known as “Fritz”.  As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, the new space will be called The Trophy Room.

Through some informal conversations, I’ve learned about some of the remodeling details and what you can expect when it opens. First, a small but open kitchen is being added to the left of the bar and the space previously reserved for the kitchen will now open into the lobby of The Chandler Inn.  The street entrance to The Trophy Room will move from the corner of Chandler and Berkeley Street to be closer to the entrance of the Chandler Inn and the reclusive patio along Berkeley Street that was for smokers when the space was called Fritz will now be reserved for al fresco dining for up to 20 patrons (this has yet to be approved – but I hope the city allows for it). The wall of windows that separated Fritz patio from the bar will be replaced with a series of doors that open to the patio making it more accessible.

I’ve been told about a few more curious tweaks the owners are making to the space, but I’ve yet to see any of this first hand.

A limerick in honor of St. Patrick’s Day

Happy St. Patrick’s Day.  I’ve republished a slightly naughty limerick that I wrote a few years ago in honor of the holiday.

Lim’ricks are the naughtiest prose
Dirty rhymes we love to compose
Men from Nantucket
Shouting, “Go $uck it!”
Are fun to write I suppose

If you have a limerick you’d like to share, I’d enjoy reading it.  Feel free to e-mail me or leave it in the comments section.

Monday (not so) blues

Monday Blues St Patricks DayFor those of you who do not live in Boston, you may not realize that March 17th (a.k.a. St. Patrick’s Day) was made into a holiday here although technically it is referred to as Evacuation Day – a holiday to commemorate the evacuation of British forces from the city during the Revolutionary War.  So for many in Boston this is a 3-day holiday weekend (sadly not for me).

Motley South End closes

Motley has a new websiteMotley has long been one of my favorite shops in the South End but sadly this past week they closed their doors.  The owners left a heartfelt message on their Facebook page here.

Although Motley was much more than a t-shirt shop, over the years I posted a number of purchases – Motley always sold some of the best t-shirts anywhere in the city.  Here are a few of my favorites.

SpeakEasy Stage Co. presents: The Whale

SpeakEasy Stage Co.

SpeakEasy Stage: THE WHALE. Photo credit: Craig Bailey / Perspective Photo

The SpeakEasy Stage Company latest production, The Whale, is an emotional two act play that runs for nearly two hours and centers around the final weeks of Charlie, a morbidly obese, gay man who lives in rural Idaho.

The struggles Charlie face in this touching play written by Samuel D. Hunter and produced at The SpeakEasy Stage Co. by David R. Gammons made me uncomfortable at times. While his fate was never in doubt, I couldn’t help but wonder what would become of the motley cast of supporting characters: Liz, his co-dependent and enabling friend; Ellie, his angry teenage daughter; Elder Thomas, the persistent Mormon missionary; and even his ex-wife, Mary.

The Whale runs through Saturday, April 5th.  Get your tickets here.

Vintage ‘Tube

When I first saw this Sam Tsui video that was posted in 2009 I was hooked.  I love Michael Jackson’s music and I thought this medley was brilliant. Do you remember this vintage ‘tube?

Have a great Saturday night.
