Restaurant review: Five Horses Tavern

Five Horses Tavern South End Outside ViewThe second location of Five Horses Tavern at 535 Columbus Avenue in the South End opened a little more than two weeks ago, and this past weekend I stopped by for lunch.  Extensive renovations by Owner Dylan Welsh, GM Sarah Hanson and Chef Aaron Parsons have transformed the space. With the kitchen now in the basement, Five Horses Tavern can seat 74 inside and 20 on their patio in good weather.

The redesigned space will give you pause upon entry. You’ll first notice the new bar featuring 40 taps that seats 11 followed by a comfortable dining area filled with tables and booths. The decor has rich colors like hunter green walls, dark brown molding and exposed brick. The large windows facing Columbus Avenue helps to make the space feel open so the effect is more cozy than cramped.Five Horses Tavern South EndThe menu is exactly what I would like to see more of in the South End (and especially in SoWa). It is filled with comfort food created with a twist that makes it distinctly their own and priced so one can visit again and again. The menu’s most expensive item is $19 but most items range between $11 – $18.

Chef Parsons has some favorite ingredients that reappear through out the menu. Leveraging the abundance of lobsters in Boston, he has four plates that include this crustacean. Pork belly, avocado and spicy ingredients like chilies and jalapenos also appear repeatedly on the menu.

Five Horses Tavern South End Grilled BrieWe started with the Grilled Brie ($10), served with frisee, pomegranate seeds and honeyed almonds sprinkled with togarshi for additional flavor. The brie nicely spread over the lightly toasted bread, and I layered the frisee and almonds with the cheese to enjoy all the flavors and textures this plate offered.

Five Horses Tavern South End Fried Chicken SammySergio ordered the Fried Chicken Sammy sandwich ($12) with a side of cheddar jalapeno mashed potatoes (as shown above). The sandwich was very satisfying and the potatoes lived up to their hype, but the wilted greens under the chicken and the bland bun could be improved upon.

Five Horses Tavern South End Tuna TacoI opted for the Tuna Tacos (3 for $16) served on flour tortillas with greens, jicama, avocado, and a blood orange chili glaze. These proved to be addicting. Upon biting into the taco I first tasted the blood orange glaze but the flavors of the seared tuna and shichimi dusting quickly follow. I loved the tacos and will definitely order these again.

Five Horses Tavern is a neighborhood pub that serves some delicious (and affordable) food with a friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff. Our server, Richelle, proved to be very helpful which only enhanced what turned out to be a favorable first visit to Five Horses Tavern. I’d suggest giving the South End’s newest restaurant a try.

2013 summer season in Ptown comes to a close

Ptown
Sergio and I will likely continue to visit Provincetown off-season, but it is always sad to say good-bye to summer.  Make your plans for 2014 early, Provincetown will book up quickly.

Hand Taste Collective comes to BoMA

BoMAThe Hand Taste Collective is a Cambridge-based group that has previously hosted two pop-up dinners at Somerville restaurants, Daddy Jones and Spoke Wine Bar.  Next Monday they will cross over the Charles River to take over BoMA Restaurant and Bar.

Monday, Sept-9 Hand Taste Collective Pop Up hits BoMA

According to Scott Kearnan’s article on Zagat.com, the menu will fuse “southeast Asian flavors with a New England sensibility”.

Kearnan writes, “Expect a “surf ‘n’ turf” of liberated marrow and snails, pickled mackerel and roasted maitake; sweetbread banh mi with liver mousse and carrot pickles; and “campfire veggies” served with guanciale and soy-cured yolk.”  I’ll be honest, I have no idea what half of those ingredients are but photos from the Hand Taste Collective facebook page look scrumptious.

It sounds like the food will be paired with equally exotic libations including natural wines, tiki drinks and beer.  If you have an adventurous palate and are looking for something different to try, make reservations for September 9th at BoMA in the South End via OpenTable.

BoMA is located at 1415 Washington St. in Boston’s South End.

Monday blues

Monday bluesNormally this wouldn’t be such a happy photo, but then again this isn’t a typical Monday. Most Americans (me included) have the day off.  I hope you too can enjoy Labor Day.

Tawkin’ like yer from Bawstin

wickedpissaAlthough many of the college students returning to Boston this week are upper class men who are familiar with this town’s idiosyncrasies, thousands of Freshmen and transfer students are walking the streets asking for directions and doing their best to settle into their new home.

Let me be among the first to welcome you and defer you to this wiki on Boston slang.  The list while somewhat old in that it references older pop culture terminology is still spot on and includes helpful definitions of words like the following.

Dawchestahh: Dorchester, Massachusetts NOTE: If you are gay and a student you are either a) likely living here; or b) get familiar with Dorchester (sometimes called Dot) because you’ll be going to a lot of parties here.

Leather District: A downtown neighborhood surrounding South Street in Boston, east of Chinatown. NOTE: The only thing gay about the Leather District is the LGBT bookstore, Calamus, and the porn shop, Marquis de Sade – both happen to be on South Street.

Wicked: very; or occasionally cool. Used indiscriminately, can modify anything (e.g.: especially “Wicked pissa.”). Almost always used as an adverb.

Yiz: Plural form of “you.” As in, “All a yiz bettah be in the cah by the time I count to fou-ah”.

While there are many great national touring shows coming to Boston, there is a vibrant local theater scene too often overlooked.  I’d like to encourage you to check out one of the performances listed below.  Since tickets to these performances are much less than those national touring companies you can even afford to go out for  drinks after the show.

Welcome back college students

welcome back college studentsSeptember 1st is known as move-in day here in Boston. With 60+ universities in the metropolitan area, most apartments have a September 1 lease to accommodate the massive student population.

Allston, Brighton, Fenway, Kenmore as well as parts of Back Bay and Beacon Hill are most significantly impacted but really there is no safe neighborhood. Double parked UHaul trucks and discarded furnishings lining the curbside can be seen nearly everywhere.

Although the summer officially does not end until the third week of September, the influx of students moving into their apartments revives Boston and signals that autumn has arrived.

Scruffy Sunday

snugglingSeems like a very pleasant way to pass a Sunday morning. Stay in bed and relax.  It is crazy here in Boston because so many renters in this city have September 1 apartment leases.

How much does a beer cost at your ballpark

Beer prices at baseball parksAnyone who has attended a Red Sox game at Fenway Park will not be surprised to see that the price of a beer is more here than anywhere else.  I think the only surprise in this graphic is that it is so expensive to buy a beer in St. Louis – the home city of Budweiser.

For those of you attending tonight’s game at Fenway Park against the Chicago White Sox, don’t say you weren’t warned.
