ISO recommendations when visiting Aruba

Sergio and I will visit Aruba for the first time later this month. We’d welcome any suggestions from anyone familiar with the island.

Mobility: To rent a care or not to rent a car (that is the questions), or can we rely on taxis & Uber? Alternatively, is the island bike-friendly, and if so, can you recommend a place?

Beaches: We will be staying near Flamingo Beach but would like to explore other beaches and see different parts of the island Is there one we should definitely see? And is there a gay beach worth checking out?

Activities: Parasailing, snorkeling, hiking, jet skiing – we are open to all suggestions. If you had a great experience, let us know and we will pass along your recommendation when we make our reservation.

Dining & Drinks: When you opt to vacation on small island overrun by tourists every place is essentially a tourist trap, but all the same, we’d welcome suggestions for meals and places to get drinks.

Men in kilts

Here is another great photo of two gay travelers, Stefan & Sebastien, whom I love to follow on Twitter. You might recognize them by their handle @NomadicBoys. They certainly look very dapper in their kilts. You can also see Stefan teasing Sebastien grocery shopping in a kilt in this cute video from their IG account. Which just goes to show you there is a kilt for every occassion and task.

2022 North American gay ski week calendar

After last year’s hiatus, I wanted to resume my tradition of sharing a calendar of ski weeks organized here in New England and North America. However, it goes without saying that you should continue to check ahead because of COVID.

Here is the 2022 calendar of gay ski celebrations as the circuit moves from beaches to slopes. I also want to give OutRyders – New England’s largest gay ski club a shout out to those in the area. If I’ve missed a ski week, please share in the comments.

Aspen Gay Ski Week: January 16-23, 2022  This week long celebration is the biggest and oldest of its kind starting back in 1977 and has grown significantly over the years.

Winter Rendezvous at Stowe, VT: January 19-23, 2022 This is New England’s largest (and longest running) gay ski week. Boston’s  gay ski club, OutRyders (mentioned above) will help members organize and logistics.

Whistler Pride & Ski Festival: January 23 – 30, 2022  This annual tradition started 30 years ago in 1992, and it offers plenty of activities. If you’re coming from the US enjoy the favorable exchange rate.

Pride “WOW” weekend at Sunday River, ME: February 4 6, 2022 Hosted by OutRyders this weekend is light on programming and heavy on getting outside to enjoy the snow. This is mostly attended by the New England LGBTQ community.

Elevation Utah Gay Ski Week at Park City: February 23 – 27, 2022 While Utah isn’t exactly “gay friendly”, this will be the 12th anniversary and each year the event grows in popularity.

Elevation Mammoth Gay Ski Week: March 16 – 20 2022 The Elevation Ski Week brand started 20 years ago at Mammoth Mountain and attracts mostly a west coast crowd.

Elevation Tremblant Gay Ski Week takes place in late January in Quebec, but it will not occur this year. The website indicates this fun gay ski week will return in 2023.

Big Gay Jay Weekend at Jay’s Peak, VT no word on if this annual ski weekend run by The OutRyders at Jay’s Peak in southern Vermont will occur but it typically takes place in March.

Vintage gay

Nothing like ringing in the New Year with a smooch in a hot tub with someone special. Sadly that won’t be in the cards for me this year, but I’ll add it to my list of things to do in 2022. Unsure when or where this may have happened. It’s one of many photos published a few years ago from Gay Star News. And yes, I have the undoctored photo – it’s just a little too hot to post here, but I’m happy to share it.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

Outdoor ice skating rinks in Boston

Winter has Boston firmly in its grip. It appears that Mother Nature has taken a liking to Old Man Winter once again, and while this love affair can be a source of frustration for those of us who prefer warmer temperatures, it’s going to be many weeks before Mother Nature will break up with him.

Faced with that stark reality, one way to get through the winter is to embrace what the season has to offer. Below I’ve included a few ice rinks in the area along with some apres-skating suggestions to help you warm up. This can make for a fun date night or evening out with friends.

Boston Common Frog Pond located in the heart of the Boston Common and considered one of the best outdoor, public skating rinks in America, this is an obvious choice. Following a few rounds on the Frog Pond you can walk to any number of places for a beverage. Two suggestions include 1928 Beacon Hill (get the Bee Sting – it includes mescal, hot honey, and lemon), or walk to Emmets Irish Pub for an Irish hot coffee. Both drinks will warm you up.

Rink @401 Park in the Fenway / Kenmore neighborhood this outdoor rink is smaller but still a lot of fun and considering it is next to the Trillium Brewery Pub and TimeOut Boston market, there are more options for warming bevvies for you to try. You may also decide to indulge by visiting one of the more than a dozen food stalls.

DCR Kelly Rink is in Jamaica Plain near the Stony Brook T station. This public skating rink is a 5-10 minute walk to the Sam Adams Brewery.

Canal District Rink in Kendall Square (Cambridge) is comparable in size to the Rink @401 Park. If you’d rather something sweet, walk over to Tatte Bakery for a hot chocolate and a treat, but if you’re looking for an adult-beverage, walk to Sumaio Hunan Kitchen and order a sake or one of their Baijiu cocktails.

Kirrane Rink at the Larz Anderson Park in Brookline has the most beautiful setting of all. Situated in the 60+ acre park that was once the summer and holiday home for Boston socialite, Isabel Weld Perkins and Larz Anderson. Sadly, there is no bar or restaurant that one can easily walk to but considering the beautiful surroundings it still makes it a worthwhile option.

Should you decide to head out for some fun at the rink, don’t forget to bundle up. It is going to be a chilly few months until spring, but have fun.
