Boston’s HUBweek 2017 is October 10-15th

HUBweek (October 10-15) is a festival for the future that celebrates innovation  in art, science and technology. HUBweek will kick off with events taking place all across the city, but will be centered on Boston’s City Hall Plaza, which will be transformed into a first-of-its-kind festival site. Filled with 80 shipping containers, dozens of art installations, and 6 geodesic domes, HUBweek will bring toether thousands of artists, innovators, and creators from across Boston, and the globe.

Join thought leaders like Malcolm Gladwell, Deepak Chopra, Atul Gawande and more; connect with 100+ of Boston’s most impactful start-ups; and interact with Boston’s creative economy and those who are helping rethink Boston’s future.

I’ve registered (it is free BTW) to attend, MIT IDE Inclusive Innovation Challenge Celebration, Leading for Creativity, and I’d encourage you to look throgh the full list of meetings, discussion groups and sessions available.

Vintage gay

This week I have a photo of Pierre et Gilles, Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard, French artists and romantic partners.  The photo which may have come from a photo booth likely dates back to the 1980s, which many readers of this blog may protest being referred to as “vintage”. The creative duo first met back in Paris in 1976 and have been producing work together ever since.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

RuPaul’s Drag Race: Werq the world tour

Earlier this fall I shared that RuPaul’s Drag Race: Werq the World Tour would be coming to Boston on Friday, October 27th and now that we are one month away from the tour pulling into Boston I wanted to let you know the show is sold out. That doesn’t mean tickets won’t be available from scalpers but if you are determined to go your best bet might be heading to New York City where rumor has it that a few tickets remain for their show the night before.

For more information visit RuPaul’s Drag Race: Werq the world tour.

Faceless by Zeitgeist Stage Company

bosarts, boston theater, zeitgeist I wanted to give a quick shout out to a Boston-based theater production company here in the South End that you may not be aware of called, Zeitgeist Stage Company. The theater company opened their 2017/18 season with a provocative New England premiere, Faceless. the play revolves around two women, 18 year-old Susie Glenn who is on trial for conspiring to commit acts of terrorism, as well as Claire Fathi, a recent Harvard Law grad and practicing Muslim, who has been brought on to prosecute Susie.

Faceless performances run through October 7 at the Plaza Black Box Theater at the Boston Center for the Arts in the South End.  Performance are Wednesday and Thursday at 7:30 PM, Friday at 8:00 PM, Saturday at 4 PM and 8 PM, and Sunday at 4 PM with talkbacks following the Sunday matinees.

Rooftop bar coming to new Southie hotel

Boston Cambria Hotel, Meyer Jabara Hotels Eater Boston reported last week that the new hotel going up in Southie just blocks from the South End line will have a rooftop bar, but don’t start making plans just yet because the hotel is not expected to open until early 2019.

Located just across from the Broadway Bridge which separates the South End from Southie, the hotel at 6 West Broadway will be part of a new condo complex with 159 rooms, a gym, and a rooftop bar. Specifics about the rooftop bar’s food and drink menus are not available but this section of Southie has a growing list of good restaurants (e.g. The Maiden and Worden Hall) so there is plenty of reason to have high hopes for this forthcoming watering hole that is stumbling distance from the South End and easily accessible to the Red Line.

Men in kilts

Boston’s newest (and coolest) cafe: Explorateur

Explorateur opened earlier this month in Boston’s historic Masonic Lodge at the corner of Boylston and Tremont Street. The new space overlooks a busy corner of the Boston Common where you can grab breakfast and lunch in their cafe or dinner in their restaurant seven days a week.

They describe themselves as a community-focused, all-day dining, European styled cafe, bar and restaurant. The cafe is filled with long community tables that let you spread out (which also conveniently have outlets) as well as smaller cafe-style tables where you can sit quietly with a friend to catch up. Eater Boston has some great photos of Explorateur’s interior here.

Strictly for research purposes of this blog I ordered a few bites from the cafe. In addition to the typical sweets and pastries you would expect the cafe provides heartier options for breakfast including omelets, pancakes and a chocolate-hazelnut French toast (that I’ll have to try on my next visit). The coffee, quiche and breakfast sandwich were all very good although the orange juice (not shown) was a bit off so perhaps stick to fully caffeinated beverages if you try the cafe.Explorateur BostonStop by and check out this great space and let me know what you think of Explorateur.  I’ll reserve a proper review for a future dinner in their restaurant.
