Postmodern Jukebox covers No Diggity

I’ve been regularly featuring Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox clips because I love how he reworks modern songs into popular styles from past decades.

Check out their latest, a cover of No Diggity with Ariana Savalas singing the 90s Blackstreet song  much like Jessica Rabbit might have at the  Patty Cake Lounge.

Tell me what you think. I actually prefer this to the original.

Say it with a condom

Unicorns are gay horsesI don’t often get merchandise mailed to me but earlier this week, Say it with a condom, sent me a batch of their Pride campaign condoms.  Each condom comes with a message; some more sobering than others, but mostly all quite funny like this one that explains unicorns are just gay horses.

You can order a few of each or as many of one message as you like from their website and 25% of all the profits form their sale will be donated to non-profit organizations that help promote LGBT equality and awareness.

Boston Pride retrospective tonight at Back Bay Harry’s

Stephen Baumbach, Boston PrideCome and join me tonight at a pop-up photography exhibit I’ve helped to organize with Boston Pride and local photographer, Stephen Baumbach, whom I met during the South End Open Studios in May.

After work tonight come over to Back Bay Harry’s grab a drink (or two) and peruse the collection that will be on display in the backroom.  Stephen has entitled this collection Pride Retrospective “Find Your Moment” and no doubt many of you will recognize yourself and friends at Boston Pride through the years.

Restaurant review: Beantown Pho & Grill

Recently Sergio and I tried a new Vietnamese / Thai restaurant that opened in mid-May on Newbury Street in the Back Bay.  Despite my aversion to all businesses that use the term “beantown”, I have not eaten Vietnamese before and was open to giving it a try.

The waitstaff was very patient explaining all the options on their 2-sided menu (one side reserved for Thai inspired plates and one side reserved for Vietnamese inspired meals). Dinner options remain very affordable with the entire menu under $15.00.  Why can’t the South End have more restaurants with this price point?

Back Bay Cheap EatsWe started our dinner with the Vietnamese starter, Muc Rang Muoi,  ($7.95) I’d describe it as a spicy version of calamari with peppers, onions, garlic and jalapenos. I enjoyed the plate but it proved too spicy for Sergio who immediately downed his glass of water.

Service was prompt, clearing plates and refilling glasses but we never felt rushed and I enjoyed eating outside on their Newbury Street patio even though it was so late that people-watching was kept to a minimum.

Back Bay Cheap EatsFor dinner Sergio ordered the Thai Red Curry with chicken.  The meal was served in a pool of red curry and an impressive amount of chicken and vegetables ($11.95).  Sergio enjoyed his meal, but I thought it wasn’t particularly memorable. His only critique was he thought it too spicy – I think his mouth was still recovering from the calamari we had shared at the start of our meal.

Back Bay cheap eatsI’m not familiar with Vietnamese food but every time I’ve ordered south Asian cuisine I’ve enjoyed how fresh and light the meals taste. I opted to try the Vietnamese plate, Kho To, a spicy white fish plate cooked in pot with a slightly spicy / sweet brown sauce; served with steamed vegetables and white rice ($13.95).  I spooned the rice and vegetables into the pot and stirred the ingredients together. While it wasn’t particularly pretty to look at, the food was flavorful.

I’m not an expert on Vietnamese cuisine and can’t speak to its authenticity but both Sergio and I enjoyed our dinners.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Realm health and fitness tips from KyleBulletproof your morning

Can butter be the answer to unlocking your true potential? To the delight of butter lovers everywhere there has recently been an onslaught of mainstream news corporations citing a study that suggests saturated fat has no correlation with heart disease. This is a complete paradox to what has been nutritional “common knowledge” for the past 50 years.

Dave Asprey from www.thebulletproofexec.com takes this a step further in suggesting that butter may actually be GOOD for you. For the past few months I have been experimenting with his concoction of coffee, butter, and MCT oil that he deems “Bulletproof coffee”.

The practice is nothing new and is still common in many other countries but is now making a comeback in the U.S. as a means of clearing “brain fog,” giving sustainable energy, controlling inflammation and stimulating your body’s fat burning potential. MCT oil, in recent studies was proven to promote weight loss, and butter is rich in butyric acid which has been proven to ease inflammation in the gut (better nutrient absorption) as well as increasing insulin sensitivity. The proposed concoction does set you back roughly 400 calories but keep in mind that not all calories are created equal.

Boston barely cracks top 20 for worst traffic

Boston MapMaybe it is time for everyone to curtail their road rage and ease up on the aggressive driving in Boston.  According to a recent study based on information from TomTom GPS users, Boston has the 19th worst traffic in North America; falling behind cities like San Jose, and Tampa Bay.

No doubt, the Big Dig as well as efforts to encourage ridership on the MBTA and programs like our bike sharing Hubway have all contributed to reducing gridlock. The study doesn’t mean traffic in Boston at times can’t be maddening – it merely points out that we spend less time idling or barely moving during peak hours than 18 other cities in North America; not too shabby.

You can read more about the findings, including where your city ranks,  here.

Tony Awards tonight at 8PM

Broadway, Tony's, I’m not a fan of most award shows.  Once the red carpet is over, I find them tedious and fraught with actors inexperienced performing in front of a live audience and / or musicians incapable of singing live.  With the exception of seeing a gaffe – John Travolta introducing “Adeem Azel” at the Oscars or Kendall Jenner’s pathetic attempt to read from her cue card at the Billboard Music Awards – I find them a bore.

However, I always LOVE the Tony’s. I know it is a cliche to have a gay man raving about Broadway, but this show entertains every year because Broadway stars have impeccable comedic timing, they are comfortable performing in front of a live audience, and most of them can sing and dance so be sure not to miss The Tony’s tonight – I promise that you’ll love it.
