2013 summer season in Ptown comes to a close

Ptown
Sergio and I will likely continue to visit Provincetown off-season, but it is always sad to say good-bye to summer.  Make your plans for 2014 early, Provincetown will book up quickly.

Hand Taste Collective comes to BoMA

BoMAThe Hand Taste Collective is a Cambridge-based group that has previously hosted two pop-up dinners at Somerville restaurants, Daddy Jones and Spoke Wine Bar.  Next Monday they will cross over the Charles River to take over BoMA Restaurant and Bar.

Monday, Sept-9 Hand Taste Collective Pop Up hits BoMA

According to Scott Kearnan’s article on Zagat.com, the menu will fuse “southeast Asian flavors with a New England sensibility”.

Kearnan writes, “Expect a “surf ‘n’ turf” of liberated marrow and snails, pickled mackerel and roasted maitake; sweetbread banh mi with liver mousse and carrot pickles; and “campfire veggies” served with guanciale and soy-cured yolk.”  I’ll be honest, I have no idea what half of those ingredients are but photos from the Hand Taste Collective facebook page look scrumptious.

It sounds like the food will be paired with equally exotic libations including natural wines, tiki drinks and beer.  If you have an adventurous palate and are looking for something different to try, make reservations for September 9th at BoMA in the South End via OpenTable.

BoMA is located at 1415 Washington St. in Boston’s South End.

Monday blues

Monday bluesNormally this wouldn’t be such a happy photo, but then again this isn’t a typical Monday. Most Americans (me included) have the day off.  I hope you too can enjoy Labor Day.

Tawkin’ like yer from Bawstin

wickedpissaAlthough many of the college students returning to Boston this week are upper class men who are familiar with this town’s idiosyncrasies, thousands of Freshmen and transfer students are walking the streets asking for directions and doing their best to settle into their new home.

Let me be among the first to welcome you and defer you to this wiki on Boston slang.  The list while somewhat old in that it references older pop culture terminology is still spot on and includes helpful definitions of words like the following.

Dawchestahh: Dorchester, Massachusetts NOTE: If you are gay and a student you are either a) likely living here; or b) get familiar with Dorchester (sometimes called Dot) because you’ll be going to a lot of parties here.

Leather District: A downtown neighborhood surrounding South Street in Boston, east of Chinatown. NOTE: The only thing gay about the Leather District is the LGBT bookstore, Calamus, and the porn shop, Marquis de Sade – both happen to be on South Street.

Wicked: very; or occasionally cool. Used indiscriminately, can modify anything (e.g.: especially “Wicked pissa.”). Almost always used as an adverb.

Yiz: Plural form of “you.” As in, “All a yiz bettah be in the cah by the time I count to fou-ah”.

Welcome back college students

welcome back college studentsSeptember 1st is known as move-in day here in Boston. With 60+ universities in the metropolitan area, most apartments have a September 1 lease to accommodate the massive student population.

Allston, Brighton, Fenway, Kenmore as well as parts of Back Bay and Beacon Hill are most significantly impacted but really there is no safe neighborhood. Double parked UHaul trucks and discarded furnishings lining the curbside can be seen nearly everywhere.

Although the summer officially does not end until the third week of September, the influx of students moving into their apartments revives Boston and signals that autumn has arrived.

Scruffy Sunday

snugglingSeems like a very pleasant way to pass a Sunday morning. Stay in bed and relax.  It is crazy here in Boston because so many renters in this city have September 1 apartment leases.

How much does a beer cost at your ballpark

Beer prices at baseball parksAnyone who has attended a Red Sox game at Fenway Park will not be surprised to see that the price of a beer is more here than anywhere else.  I think the only surprise in this graphic is that it is so expensive to buy a beer in St. Louis – the home city of Budweiser.

For those of you attending tonight’s game at Fenway Park against the Chicago White Sox, don’t say you weren’t warned.

Time to do the laundry

Sexy GuyWhat to do when you have no towels? I suppose its time to do laundry.

Have a great weekend

happy labor day wkd.If you happen to live in the United States you are probably excited about the holiday weekend – or maybe I’m just projecting.   Although summer technically continues, the season ends with Labor Day this Monday so make the most of the last weekend of summer.

Gay ol’ Philadelphia

Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) Last week The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Corp shared their second commercial targeting the LGBT community to celebrate their 10th anniversary of their award-winning campaign, “Philadelphia Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay”

The humorous video features the ever so popular, Miss Richfield 1981 taking selfie’s in places of interest in Philadelphia.  I’d love to see Boston create something like this to welcome LGBT travelers.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddleEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.

If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague to see if you can figure it out together.

I’ll confirm answers later in the day so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance.

This weeks riddle:

One Sunday evening a little past five
The man of the house was found not alive.
It was a murder, a knife in his back
Police questioned all about the attack.
Jan had been busy, cooking the dinner
Jill had gone running, just to get thinner.
Jane had gone outside to pick up the mail
Which one of these three would end up in jail?
