Head of the Charles Regatta is this weekend
The Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) is a Boston area tradition that dates back to 1965 and has evolved into a massive two-day rowing competition that draws more than 11,000 athletes and 400,000 spectators, making it the largest rowing event in the world.
The 2019 HOCR takes place this Saturday and Sunday. The forecast suggests plenty of sun with Sunday being the warmer of the two days and thankfully for the rowers, very little wind. If you’ve not been to this premiere rowing events, head down to the Charles River to cheer on these amazing athletes.
The organizers have created a great website that includes more information about the races, maps and FAQs. You can learn more by visiting the official HOCR website, www.hocr.org.

Vintage gay
Russell Cheney (October 16, 1881 – July 12, 1945) shown on the left was an accomplished painter and Francis Otto Matthiessen (February 19, 1902 – April 1, 1950) shown on the right was an educator, scholar and influential literary critic. Matthiessen was twenty years Russell’s junior but the two met in 1924 and remained a couple until Cheney’s death in 1945.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. One of my favorite sporting events is the annual Head of the Charles Regatta that will take place later this weekend along the Charles River which divides Boston and Cambridge. This is the largest rowing event in the world with more than 11,000 athletes participating in the two day event.
This account shares some beautiful photos of the annual regatta, the crowds and the two cities, Boston and Cambridge, which play host to this event that will draw close to 500,000 people to the banks of the Charles River to cheer on the athletes as they race down the river.

Boston Book Festival this weekend
I believe this weekend will be the 11th Annual Boston Book Festival. This free event centered in Copley Square and the Boston Public Library this Saturday and Sunday is a wonderful program worth checking out. The 2019 BBF will include 350+ presenters, 140+ events at 37 venues and is expected to draw 30k people.
The Boston Book Festival celebrates the power of words to stimulate, agitate, unite, delight, and inspire by holding year-round events culminating in an annual, Festival that promotes a culture of reading, ideas and enhances the vibrancy of our city.
The variety of events, topics and discussions are meant to ensure there is something for everyone. If you’re an aspiring (or possibly frustrated) writer, there are many sessions set up all weekend long as well (check’em out here). One program I’m contemplating attending is Saturday’s Poetry & Pints.
This year’s full schedule can be viewed here: BBF Schedule.

Different From The Others presented by Provincetown Film Society
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the earliest surviving film depicting LGBT people, The Provincetown Film Society presents two very special screenings of the recently restored Different From The Others. The German film dates back to the Weimar Republic in 1919 and was created in response to the then-current laws under Germany, that made homosexuality a criminal offense. It is believed to be the first pro-gay film in the world.
Want to see this historic film? You have two opportunities to buy tickets. Select the links below for more information about the screenings and to get tickets.
Ptown Showing: Provincetown Theater on October 24
Boston Showing: Strand Theater/Dorchester on December 5
Different From The Others tells a compelling story of secrecy and oppression that continues to play out in the world today. The film is about a violinist whose romance with a talented male student is thwarted when a blackmailer threatens to expose their relationship.
Proceeds raised from these showings will go to benefit the Ptown Flim Society and Trevor Project.
