Vintage gay

gay hollywood

It was Rock Hudson’s death that ultimately galvanized Hollywood and Elizabeth Taylor in particular to put a spotlight on the AIDS epidemic. I shudder to think how much longer it would’ve gone unchecked without such a famous and “masculine” person succumbing to the virus.

President Reagan’s lack of sympathy and homophobic policies hardened my heart even though I was still in the closet and made me realize, the party of Reagan could never be my party. Though it pains me to say it, I hope Reagan is still burning in hell for what he did – or to be more precise, what he didn’t do.

Above is a photo of Rock at the prime of his life with his lover, Lee Garlington.

This week on Instagram: bearded_selfie

brazilianConsidering the near obsession that many seem to have when it comes to facial hair, I’m amazed it took me so long to discover this Instagram account, that has a very respectable (but not overwhelming) number of followers.

Above I’ve shared a particularly popular post of Flavio an airplane mechanic who lives in Belo Horizonte Brasil. Below I’ve shared an equally handsome selfie from a ginger named Andre who is from Germany (and like me) is left handed. Both of these men submitted their selfies and if you too have a beard and would like to add your photo to this popular account, start by following and send off the image as a DM. Not all photos can be posted but go ahead and give it a try.

Donkey Show closes September 7th

Oberon Theater Donkey Show

Donkey Show at the Oberon closes forever on September 7

Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus’ celebrated hit The Donkey Show, has been performed each Saturday night at the Oberon theater for more than a decade but that run will end in a little less than a month on Saturday, September 7th.

If you’re unfamiliar with The Donkey Show,  it is an immersive experience filled with disco music, mirror balls, feathered divas, roller skaters and hustle queens. Inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the audience plays the role of party-goers dancing to 70s disco hits at the storied Studio 54 while the cast of actors play out this classic story and after each show attendees are encouraged to continue dancing at the theater / club.

If you’ve never seen this award winning show, get your tickets before it closes forever on Saturday, September 7th.

South End is Boston’s next big thing

The title of this blog post was my response to Mark Bruso’s recent article in the Boston Business Journal, that asks that question. His article focuses on several reasons why he believes the South End is Boston’s next big thing.

He points out how centrally located the South End is as well as its proximity to major interchanges. Bruso further asserts that the South End is home to a highly skilled workforce (more so than any other downtown neighborhood) with “79% more healthcare workers and 52% more management professionals than the next best neighborhood”. Moreover, the neighborhood is projected to see a boom in office market space, that is expected to double over the next five years due to three developments: 80 East Berkeley St, 321 Harrison Ave and the huge BMC Exchange that will replace Boston’s Flower Market.

Boston architecture, South End BostonUnlike the near universal criticism leveled at the Seaport, which is defined by buildings best described as unimaginative, glass boxes with few public spaces – the South End maintains a distinctive look, known for its 19th century Victorian Bowfronts, Renaissance Revival, Italianate and French Second Empire row houses as well as beautiful parks and converted brick mills housing artists, small businesses and residences. But his most compelling argument in my mind really is the livability and quality of that life. He points out that this tiny downtown neighborhood is home to more than 120 eateries and 25 bars – making it a mecca for young professionals.

I agree with all of Bruso’s assertions and hope that if development does indeed take off the City will use those appealing traits outlined in his article to insist that developers make greater investment in building affordable housing (in this community), space for small businesses to thrive and better public transport.
