Jet Blue announces nonstop service between Boston and Steamboat Springs

Hey snow bunnies. Looking for an extravagant holiday gift for your boyfriend but no clue what to do? This week Jet Blue announced that they would start flying nonstop from Boston to Steamboat Springs with weekly nonstop service on Wednesday and Saturday.

I took a look on Jet Blue’s website and was able to find round trip, nonstop fares starting starting at $469 in January, $324 in February and $410 in March. As a one-time skier but someone who hasn’t skied in a looooong time, I’m happy to see more opportunities to fly out West for ski trips from Boston. I’ve never skied in Colorado and have no idea what Steamboat Springs is like but Jet Blue’s flights make it the only airline from New England that flies nonstop here. If anyone books a trip, let me know.

Unfortunately, I don’t get to see him often because he practices his craft in Brazil, but you can bet I enjoy the images of his creative cocktails which he often posts on his Instagram account.  Although Vinicius is straight, he is also a first class flirt and sitting at any bar he works at is an absolute blast.

“P-U”

One more political observation to close 2018

witch huntLast week the media reported that President Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen was sentenced to serve three years in prison. He eventually ended up pleading guilty for lying to Congress, tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance violations.  For those keeping count (and I am) that makes Mr. Cohen the 4th “witch” sent to prison and that does not count either Paul Manafort who will be sentenced in March 2019 or Rick Gates who also waits to be sentenced.

What I find most troubling about this investigation is that for many supporters of Trump the arrests and sentencing have have done little to change their minds. Additionally, there is a larger segment of people who I’d refer to as “bystanders”, who don’t necessarily support Trump (they may even dislike him) but they don’t feel compelled to change the status quo either. This group fascinate and confound me the most.

Trump Russia scandal

Despite the fact that Special Counsel Robert Mueller (a Republican by the way) has identified eight individuals (almost all of whom have plead guilty) and charged thirty-three individuals in illegal activity, these ‘bystanders’ don’t see a threat to our political system. The U.S. has had a democracy for a  long time, and is still much admired despite our actions of late, I’d hate to think that party affiliation and political persuasion could trump those values and further erode the faith we have in our political system.

I do hope that as people start to reflect on this past year and plan for 2019, that we can all recognize (witch hunt or not), the crimes leveled against these people are serious and the fact that there are so many implicated makes it even more disturbing. I hope that rather than turning off people, this civics class playing out before our very eyes will make us stop and reflect upon what truly distinguishes America and makes it a great country.

Boston real estate: $30,000 rent and a $45million condo

boston real estateWhile Boston is not as expensive as Manhattan or San Francisco, the cost of living and price of real estate remains a problem but that’s not an issue for the people who recently rented a three-bedroom penthouse at the Millennium Tower for $30,000 per month. The 4,137 square-foot pied-à-terre (I joke) includes an office, library, four and a half bathrooms, two parking spots and beautiful views with their floor-t0-ceiling windows. Want to see more? Check out the pics here.

While the rental may seem crazy, it is small potatoes when compared to the 60th floor “Grand Penthouse” which takes the entire top floor and has eight bedrooms, nine full bathrooms, three half bathrooms and is on the market for $45 million.

T4J looks to bring holiday cheer to detained migrant children this Christmas: Please help

Detention center in McAllen, Texas. Photo: Center for Border Protection

The organizers of  Toys for Joys, Inc. (T4J), recently hosted their 10th Anniversary Gala this month and I’m pleased to share that it was an amazing success; toys and gifts from the event are being sent to children and teens throughout Massachusetts. This week T4J has taken on a new challenge and they need your help to spread the word. Please read and share this post or the link included below with as many people as you know, because time is of the essence.BostonT4J is working to collect additional donations for 5,000 migrant children (many of whom) have been separated from their families and are in the equivalent of detention centers. T4J has a lofty goal of raising $50,000 in the next week to help brighten what must be a terribly frightening time for these children.

If you would like to help, please visit the T4J website and make a donation today.

45 years ago homosexuality was declassified as a mental disorder

Forty-five years ago tomorrow, (December 15, 1973) the American Psychiatric Association (APA) voted to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders. The vote was in favor of declassification but was not universally agreed upon with  5,854 (60%) psychiatrists voting to remove homosexuality from the DSM, and 3,810 (40%) to retain it. Following the vote the APA created a compromise, removing homosexuality from the DSM and putting in place something called a “sexual orientation disturbance” for people who were deemed “in conflict with” their sexual orientation. This bogus compromise was eventually completely discredited by 1987, but its stain lingers. It is this “sexual orientation disturbance” that many in Conversion / Reparative therapy still point to.

We all know the fight to recognize LGBTQ identities as valid and valuable continues. One need only look to the people in the White House to realize how quickly our gains can be taken away and the contempt they hold for the LGBTQ community. It was only last October that Trump was reported joking with staff that VP Mike Pence hates homosexuals so much he wants to “hang all of them.”

So while we should be proud of how far we’ve come in forty-five years, we should not become complacent.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

Some of you may recall this riddle which I post around this time each year.

This week’s brain teaser:

This time of year is filled with songs
That through the world are heard.
And this classic holiday melody
Is titled with just two words.

The first syllable of Word #1
Is a sound you might make when down.
The second syllable of this word
Might come from a cotton gown.

The second word can be found
On a board with sixty-four squares.
Four of these appear at the start
And all of them look like mares.
