Boston Ballet Nutcracker runs through Dec. 30th
Tonight is opening night for the Boston Ballet’s The Nutcracker. This classic holiday tradition is a wonderful way to introduce someone to the ballet. The music will be familiar and the story is easy to follow. The ballet and beautiful decorations at the Opera House will get you in the holiday spirit and turn an ordinary night into something special for you and whomever you bring with you.
Tickets can be quite affordable, starting at $37 and performances run through Sunday, December 30th. If you need some dinner or drink suggestions on where to go either before or after the ballet feel free to ask for recommendations. Be sure to watch the Boston Ballet video, “Nutcracker Prince vs. Mouse King”.
Vintage gay
Check out the ashtray next to the American flag. Not something you’re likely to see (at least around these parts). When do you think this might have been taken? I”m going to guess the 1970s or 1980s.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Union Park Pizza opens in South End
Union Park Pizza is now open seven days a week after a ‘soft opening’ that lasted a couple of weeks with limited hours and menu. The husband and wife couple who opened the new pizzeria in the space formerly occupied by Harry O’s received a nice write up in Eater Boston, announcing their soft opening.
Effective this week, Union Park Pizza is open until 10PM Monday – Saturday and until 8PM on Sunday. The sparsely decorated pizzeria is a bit sterile looking at the moment. Fortunately, the thin crust pizza is quite good and the restaurant is a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
Above is a photo of a large pizza, half Neighborhood (on the left) and half Veggie Supreme (on the right). I was partial to The Neighborhood but I’m curious to hear what you think – give them a try and let me know.
Union Park Pizza Specials
The Standard: Garlic-infused olive oil, Fior di Latte, aged Parmesan, aged mozzarella and fresh chopped herbs $3 slice / $16 pizza
Pepperoni: The Standard with Moddy’s deli pepperoni $3.50 slice / $18 pizza
The Neighborhood: The Standard topped with organic caramelized onions, and Mycotera mushroom blend $3.50 slice / $18
The Sausage: The Standard topped with creamy ricotta, organic caramelized onions, Mycotera mushroom blend and Moddy’s deli cured sausage $4 slice / $20 pizza
Veggie Supreme: The Standard topped with Mycotera mushroom blend, sliced red onions, green peppers, sliced olives and baby spinach $4 slice / $20 pizza
The Mags Supreme: Maggie’s favorite – a veggie supreme with Moody’s deli pepperoni and cured sausage $4 slice / $22 pizza
BosGuy Rating: 3 out of 5 stars, Good.

A John Waters Christmas (at Berklee Dec. 6th)
John Waters will be in Boston next Thursday on December 6th at the Berklee Performance Center. While there is no detail around the duration or content, one can assume John Waters will be candid, gross and hilarious – sometimes all three at the same time. Anyone who is a fan of Waters’ twisted sense of humor should rush to get tickets before the show sells out.

South End’s newest restaurant Shore Leave opens
Earlier this week Boston’s newest Tiki Bar and the South End’s latest watering hole / restaurant opened. Shore Leave opened to the public in new space beneath the CVS across from the Ink Block on Monday, November 19th. The entrance to this new restaurant is located down a little side street between Washington and Harrison Avenue at 11 William E. Mullins Way.

shoreleaveboston.com
The owners of the delicious Italian restaurant, Bar Mezzana, are the people behind Shore Leave. The subterranean location was originally expected to serve as storage for the CVS but as you can see from the beautiful photo from Eater Boston, the island decor makes you feel like you’re somewhere tropical. The cocktail menu offers drinks for the individual, couples as well as groups. And the food, as you might expect, has a distinct Asian / South Pacific flair, with options like Yellowfin Tuna Poke, Filipino BBQ Ribs and Dan Dan Wontons.
You may check out their menu by visiting their website (shared above) and can read more about the new restaurant in the recent article from Eater Boston.
